As the supplier of choice for structural and tooling prepregs, and vacuum bagging consumables to the marine industry, Cytec offers customers quality, custom-made products plus world-class experience, delivery and technical support.

Our advanced prepreg resin systems and flexible production methodology have made us the ideal supplier for the high performance marine industry. We’re actively involved in the production of boats, race boats, super yachts, and commercial and naval craft.

We continue to supply prominent builders of current world class yachts, many of which have enjoyed an outstanding history of success in high profile race campaigns, including the America’s Cup, the Volvo Ocean Race and the Audi MedCup.

Our process technology also extends to infusion methodology, widely adopted in the marine industry. We are able to offer solutions for the widest range of composite processing challenges.

Leisure marine application

ETNZ, challenged the 2013 34th America’s cup. Key to becoming the top challenger and attempting to win back the Cup was the design and construction of the new in class AC72 catamarans.

And while ETNZ didn’t manage to claim the Cup back, their risk taking approach and innovative spirit meant that they led the design race from the start with their foiling, wing sailed catamaran, and changed the marine industry.

To build the hulls, platforms and wing components of these unique AC72s, the team used Cytec’s high strength woven carbon fibre resin prepreg and compatible adhesive film. These low temperature out-of-autoclave materials were specifically selected to meet the catamarans extreme design requirements such as ultimate stiffness and weight reduction and the required power to weight ratio for the components. The low initial cure temperatures also offered high accuracy of thermal expansion calculations and therefore high material performance predictability.

CASE STUDY: H2X uses Cytec’s resin infusion consumables

H2X shipyard constructed the 100% composite 36m “André Malraux” ship for the French Ministry of Culture.

The infusion process to manufacture the hull, deck and internal walls was carried out using Cytec Process Materials products, including vacuum bagging film, sealant tape, combination products and flow media that help the resin transfer, spray adhesive, infusion spider and hose.

These products have all been developed with low temperature, infusion process in mind and make them ideal to manufacture large marine components.

Benefits that Cytec brought to H2S were:

• A range of highly performing products developed specifically for infusion processing.

• Outstanding technical customer support.

• Reactiveness to customers’ needs and on-time delivery.

Process Materials

We offer a comprehensive range of composites processing materials and consumables optimised for the high performance and production marine markets.

Prepreg processing

We offer a select range of consumables for high temperature curing (over 212°F/100°C), including:

Resin infusion processing

In addition to the prepreg processing range, we offer a select range of consumables which have been designed to cater for resin infusion processing. This range includes:

• INFUPLY (248°F/120°C) perforated release film with knitted infusion mesh - promotes resin transfer and strips easily from the laminate

• VMS2 (320°F/160°C) vacuum medium strip, promotes vacuum flow across wet impregnated zones

• CW3 HDPE mesh and a thin polyester non-woven sleeve used for matrix transfer

Together, these consumables:

• Reduce labour costs,

• Minimise the scrap rate

• Improve part repeatability.

We focus on reducing the overall cost of infusion processing through value-added consumables and engineering solutions, such as welded/tailored vacuum bags, reusable vacuum bags and kitted consumables. Indeed, we support our customers by providing tailor-made, kitted solutions offering total cost of manufacture reductions through time savings, excellent process repeatability and reduced wastage. Customers also benefit from onsite support, technical expertise and labour-saving consultancy.

Other items are available upon request and our technical data sheets are available online.

• VACFILM 200g ( 120°) UP TO 16 MT. WIDE BAGGING FILM

• VACFILM450V 338°F (170°C) vacuum bagging film

• High air flow breathers

• High temperature sealant tapes

• Quick release/high temperature peel ply

• Flash tapes

Tooling

Cytec innovation extends to providing a complete solution to the customer part manufacturing experience. As such, we not only offer the structural materials and their process consumables, but also a complete range of composite tooling solutions. Our tooling prepregs offer outstanding surface finish and longevity for the manufacture of complex mould tools. Our design service can support tool design optimisation to ensure a fit-for-purpose solution. In addition we offer soft tooling technology including reusable vacuum bags, integral heater blankets, intensifiers and caul sheets.
