GRAMMAR PART

I) Commas vs Parentheses

A comma signals readers to pause. It is used to separate words or groups of words in a series. Commas are also used to set off introductory or nonessential elements in a sentence. A nonessential, or nonrestrictive, element is one that is not needed to convey the sentence’s main idea.

Parentheses also set apart nonessential elements from the rest of the sentence. However, parentheses suggest the information is even less important than information set off by commas. Directions: Choose the sentence with the correct punctuation:

II) Spelling and Capitalization

For many nouns, add -s or -es at the end of a word to change it from singular to plural. The nouns train, watch, and hero are singular. The plural forms of these nouns are trains, watches, and heroes. For irregular plurals, you must follow certain spelling rules:

• For words that change form, remember these irregular forms: phenomenon, phenomena; person, people

• For words that end in -f or -fe, change the -f or -fe to -v and add -es: life, lives; yourself, yourselves

• For words that end with a consonant and -y, change the -y to -i and add -es: story, stories; memory, memories

You must also follow certain capitalization rules. Here are some rules:

• Capitalize proper nouns and adjectives: Chicago; Japan • Capitalize days of the week and months of the year: Tuesday, January • Capitalize a person’s title and proper names: Captain Webber, Mom, Lizzie • Capitalize the first word in a sentence: The dog stood at the entrance to the station.

III) PRESENT / PAST/ FUTURE

A verb expresses an action or a state of being. Every complete sentence includes at least one verb.

When a verb is used in a sentence, it has a tense. A verb tense shows when the action (or state of being) of the verb takes place. The three simple tenses are past tense, present tense, and future tense.

Regular verbs such as follow and walk form their past tense by adding -ed or -d.

IV) PERFECT TENSES

The perfect tense of a verb combines a form of have with the past participle of the verb.

• The present perfect tense shows an action that began in the past and continues in the present. • The past perfect tense shows a past action or condition that ended before another past action

began. • The future perfect tense shows a future action or condition that will have ended before another

begins
