Read the following letter carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Atlanta is the heroine of many Greek stories. She was very beautiful and

was best known for her speed in running. She could run faster than any man.

Many men fell in love with Atlanta, but she did not want to marry them.

At last she agreed to get married. She said she would take as a husband the

man who could beat her in a race. But if she won, she would kill them.

Several young men took up the challenge. Alas! None could run faster than

Atlanta. She overtook all of them and put them to death by spearing them in the

back.

One day a young man name Hippomenes challenged her. This young man first

went secretly to a goddess for help. The goddess gave him some wonderful golden

apples and told him to throw them, one by one, in front of Atlanta during the race.

Hippomenes did just that. The apples were so beautiful that Atlanta stopped

each time to pick them up and bite them. So Hippomenes arrived at the finishing

post first and won Atlanta’s as his wife.
