What is Fitness-for-Service?

According to API 579, Fitness-For-Service is defined as:

“…quantitative engineering evaluations that are performed to demonstrate the structural integrity of an in-service component that may contain a flaw or damage.”

This Fitness-for-Service guidance is much needed. Whereas the design codes, such as the B31 piping codes and the Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes, do a good job of defining the initial design requirements, they generally don’t address the issues of in-service degradation. Similarly, the inspection codes historically have provided some guidance on, for example, evaluation of thin areas, but have not provided nearly enough depth to fully address the problem.

Within the context of API 579, Fitness-for-Service is applied to a wide range of pressurized components such as pipes, pressure vessels, and storage tanks. Although developed principally for refineries and petrochemical plants, it is applicable to a wide range of industries, including pipelines, pharmaceuticals,

power (nuclear and fossil), as well as fertilizer, acid and other chemical plants.

This course will provide training in the fitness-for-service evaluation methods of the API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 Standard. Attendees will learn the basic rules and principles for Level 1 and 2 assessments ofdamaged equipment. This 3½ day course will cover all of the sections of API 579, from Part 3 (Brittle Fracture)to Part 13 (Laminations) and also review introductory material in Parts 1 and 2. Numerous hands-onexamples, case studies, quizzes and class-work assignments will provide a departure from a straight lecture format and maximize participant involvement. Numerous demonstrations and side-bar presentations are also

included to provide real-world techniques and solutions to fitness-for-service problems.

Expanded ContentOur unique course includes embedded demos and supplemental presentations scattered between technical presentations to give you first hand exposure to technologies and technical concepts important toFitness-for-Service assessment. Included are such diverse topics as:

• New scanning technology that facilitates Level 3 pit assessment

• Charpy testing and the effect of temperature on toughness

• New mini-boat sampling technology (scoop sampler)

• Use of composite pipe wraps to mitigate local thin areas

• Live acoustic emissions testing demo, and more…

Course Highlights• Applicability and limitations of the methods

• Damage mechanism review and discussion

• Step-by-step instruction in Level 1 and 2 methods

• Examples of Level 3 techniques

• NDT methods for use in inspecting damage mechanisms

• Quizzes and student-worked examples

• Worked examples and case studies of FFS evaluations

• Live demos, video-demonstrations, supplementary technical talks
