STATEMENT OF NEEDS There have been many recent advances in the clinical aspects of pediatric ear disease. Theseinclude the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic otitis media, complications of otitis media, conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, otitis externa, lesions of the cerebellopontine angle, vertigo, and facial nerve disorders. In addition, there has been an explosion in our understanding of the basic science processes that underlie the senses of hearing and balance. This conference will offer an update focusing on these recent developments, in particular on patient care issues relevant to the practice of general pediatrics, family medicine, otolaryngology, internal medicine, and audiology. Cliniciansneed to be updated on the current clinical trends in managing the pediatric ear.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:• Describe the current state of knowledge regarding the risk factors and microbiology of acute

otitis media.• Detail how to diagnose and treat tympanic membrane perforations and cholesteatomas.• Understand the signs and symptoms associated with a complication of otitis media.• Identify the special educational needs of children with hearing loss and the available

programs designed to address those needs.
