UNIVERSAL MARKINGAll dezincification resistantKuterlite fittings carry thedistinctive mark.

GUNMETALSome Kuterlite fittings andvalves are manufacturedfrom gunmetal, and can beidentified by the markon the body.

At Yorkshire Fittings we are constantly striving todevelop jointing solutions that meet thechanging needs of specifiers and installers alike. The Kuterlite suite of compression fittingscomprises a number of product ranges which suita broad spectrum of applications across thedomestic and commercial sectors.

The principle of the Kuterlite jointThe Kuterlite joint consists of a body with a built-in stop for receiving the tube, a compression ringthe same size as the tube’s outside diameter, and a compression nut. To make the joint, the tubeand fitting are assembled, and the compressionnut tightened with a spanner. This quick andsimple action compresses the compression ringonto the tube, creating a sound mechanical joint.

Advantages of KuterliteOne of the major advantages of Kuterlitecompression fittings is that the installer joins thetube by mechanical means. This heat-free systemmeans no hot works permits are required, and jointscan be made where it would otherwise be dangerousto use a naked flame.

Kuterlite joints can be taken apart and remadewithout adversely affecting their performance. Jointscan be made on wet pipework, making them idealfor use in maintenance and repair applications wherethe complete draining of pipework is difficult.

Manufactured from duplex brass, dezincificationresistant alloy (DZR) or gunmetal, the Kuterliterange offers choice and versatility.

Many Kuterlite items are available with a chromeplated finish for functionality and maximumaesthetic appeal, for example in bathrooms andkitchens. Most are also available with a polishedquality chrome plated finish to special order.

Users of Kuterlite fittings can be confident thatthey are purchasing an established product with aproven reputation for reliability and quality whichspans fifty years.

Presenting the rangeKuterlite compression products have been designedfor use with a variety of materials including lightgauge plain and chrome plated copper tube, stainless steel and carbon steel tube, PEX, PB andtwo ranges specifically for polyethylene pipe. Inaddition to standard line fittings, the range includesan extensive selection of valves and accessories.

k. Kuterlite 600 are non-manipulative (Type A) duplex brass compression fittings in sizes from 6mm to 54mm. The range is suitable for use onclosed circuit central heating systems, in aboveground hot and cold water services, on compressedair lines, oil and other fluids, LPG and low pressure gas services. For fuel oils, refer to OFTEC advice.K600 fittings have a one-piece body of duplexbrass, symmetrical compression rings ofdezincification resistant alloy and hexagonal duplexbrass nuts.

The range is suitable for jointing copper tubemanufactured to BS EN 1057 (R250 or R290), or –in sizes up to 28mm – with PEX pipe toBS 7291 Part 3, PB pipe to BS 7291 Part 2,stainless steel tube to BS EN 10312 (formerly BS 4127) DVGW GW541, and carbon steel tube toDIN 2394/NEN 1982 (carbon steel tube is notsuitable for potable water applications).Additionally, in maintenance applications, selectedimperial sized tubes can be jointed with metricKuterlite 600 fittings. See page 8 paragraph n formore information.

For Type A jointing of soft copper tube (R220)above ground, a supporting K690 pipe support liner should be used. Similarly, the appropriateliner should be used for installations made withPEX or PB pipe. Kuterlite fittings in sizes 12mm (3⁄8" BSP) and 15mm (1⁄2" BSP) have BSP couplingthreads as standard, which enables connectiondirectly to female BSP fittings and valves.

Kuterlite flexible hose connectorsKuterlite Flexifit flexible connectors makeinstallations in confined spaces easy. The connectorscomprise an EPDM hose covered in single braidedstainless steel, and are available for connectionto 1⁄2" taps with 1⁄2" or 15mm inlets, and 3⁄4" tapswith 15mm or 22mm inlets. Kuterlite Flexifitconnectors are suitable for connection to anysuitable hot and/or cold water appliance, and can

water supply in domestic or commercial situations. They are suitable for use with copper tube to BS EN 1057 (R250, R290), and with PB and PEXpipe to BS 7291 Parts 2 and 3 (with liner). With15mm inlets and 3⁄4" BSP outlets, appliance valvesallow the water supply to be shut off formaintenance, repair, or when the appliance is notin use. The Kuterlite range of appliance valves ishighly durable. All are fitted with double “O” ringsfor reliability and to withstand regular operation.Appliance valves are manufactured from duplexbrass with a high quality protective and decorativechrome plated finish. Both blue and red discs aresupplied and can be fitted for easy identification ofhot and cold outlets.

Check valves are a cost-effective means ofpreventing the contamination of the water supplyfrom backflow, back siphonage or cross flow. Kuterlite double check valves are suitable for usewith fluid categories 1, 2 and 3, as defined in TheWater Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.They ensure the filling of primary heating circuitsmeet the requirements of these Regulations. Theyare also advisable where a hose is connected to ahose union bibtap, and should be installed asclose to the tap as possible. Kuterlite single checkvalves are suitable for use with fluid categories 1and 2, and are best utilised to protect centralheating systems, mains water supplies during theregeneration cycle of water softeners, or forinstallation downstream of water meters.

STOPVALVES

HIGH PERFORMANCE VALVESThe stopvalve designincorporates a rubber washerthat is screwed down onto abrass seat to create a sealsuitable for use with mainspressure water.

GATE VALVEIn Kuterlite gate valves theprimary sealing surfaces arebrass. Flow is stopped byscrewing down the gate intoa groove in the valve body.

NON RESTRICTIVEKuterlite gate valves are fullbore. When the valve is fullyopen the gate moves up intothe valve body to leave flowunhindered.

GATE VALVES

Kuterlite valvesYorkshire Fittings recognises that different serviceenvironments place a variety of demands onpipeline systems. With this in mind, acomprehensive selection of Kuterlite valves havebeen developed, designed to suit both domesticand commercial service requirements, from hot andcold water services and heating, to oil, gas andsteam installations. Valves are assembled usingexactly the same jointing procedure as Kuterlitecompression fittings.

Stopvalves with compression ends have gunmetalbodies, with brass or gunmetal headworks. In sizesfrom 15mm to 54mm they are suitable for use withcopper tube to BS EN 1057 (R250, R290); and insizes up to 28mm with PB and PEX pipe to BS 7291Parts 2 and 3 (with liner). In sizes from 20mm to63mm and 3⁄8" to 3⁄4" they are suitable for use withmetric and polyethylene pipe respectively.

Stopvalves are used wherever the flow of hot orcold water services needs to be regulated, eitherabove or below ground, for which the correct typemust be selected. Certain Kuterlite stopvalves aredesigned for use in specific instances. Examplesinclude lockshield stopvalves for preventingunauthorised adjustment, and combined stopvalvesand draining taps for easy isolation and systemdrain down.

Gate valves in size from 15mm to 76mm aresuitable for use with copper tube to BS EN 1057(R250, R290). They can also be used in sizes up to28mm with PB and PEX pipe to BS 7291 Parts 2and 3 (with liner); XPress Stainless System tube orstainless steel tube to BS EN 10312, DVGW GW541;and XPress Carbon System tube or carbon steeltube to DIN 2394/NEN 1982 (on non-potableclosed circuit systems only).

Gate valves are ideal for use as shut off valves inhot and cold water services, central heatingsystems, oil lines – particularly heating oils –steam installations, gas and compressed air linesand other engineering services. Wheelhead andlockshield variants are manufactured in brass insizes from 15mm to 28mm; and in gunmetal insizes from 15mm to 76mm. A precision-madewedge, seated at a right-angle to the direction offlow, allows water regulation.

i. Appliance valves are designed for use on hot andcold water systems when connecting washingmachines, dishwashers and other appliances to the

Stopvalves, gate valves, appliance and check valves

Kuterlite check valves are suitable for use withcopper tube to BS EN 1057 (R250, R290), with PBand PEX pipe to BS 7291 Parts 2 and 3, and withXPress Stainless System tube or stainless steel tubeto BS EN 10312, DVGW GW541. They aremanufactured from DZR alloy and are available insizes from 15mm to 28mm and with female threadedends in 1⁄2" BSP to 2" BSP. Double check valvesincorporate a 1⁄4" BSP centre test point. All Kuterlitecheck valves operate silently with a low pressureloss, via a spring loaded mechanism which closesthe valve under neutral and reverse flow conditions.

For check valve installation and location directions, refer to The Water Supply (Water Fittings)Regulations 1999.

c. Servicing valves help conserve precious waterresources by allowing sections of pipework to beisolated for repair or maintenance work without the need to drain down the entire system. Theyshould be fully open or shut, and not be used asregulating valves.

Kuterlite servicing valves are suitable for use withcopper tube to BS EN 1057 (R250, R290), PB andPEX pipe to BS 7291 Parts 2 and 3, and with XPressStainless System tube or stainless steel tube to BS EN 10312, DVGW GW541. They are available in15mm and 22mm sizes with compression ends, andin sizes 15mm and 1⁄2" BSP for connecting to swivel end – for directly connecting to taps, float valvesand other similar devices. Manufactured fromduplex brass, the servicing valves have a protectiveand decorative chrome plated finish, withhexagonal nuts and a closing mechanism operatedwith a screwdriver or coin.

Draining taps are for installation at strategicpoints in hot and cold water services and centralheating systems, to allow easy draining when repair

and maintenance is required. Kuterlite drainingtaps are available in Type 1 and Type 2 varieties, signifying their operational capabilities andcompliance with BS 2879 Types 1 and 2 respectively.

f. Kuterlite draining taps are suitable for use withcopper tube to BS EN 1057 (R250, R290), with PBand PEX pipe to BS 7291 Parts 2 and 3, with XPressStainless System tube or stainless steel tube to BS EN 10312, DVGW GW541; and with XPress CarbonSystem tube or carbon steel tube to DIN 2394/NEN 1982 (on non-potable closed circuitsystems only). Brass draining taps are available with15mm, 22mm and 28mm compression ends and 1⁄2"BSP parallel male ends, and selected DZR varietiesalso have 3⁄4" and 1" BSP parallel male ends.

Kuterlite draining taps feature a secure and non-removable spindle. An “O” ring seal eliminatesleakage along the spindle while draining.

Quarter turn ball valves are a safe, reliable andcost effective way to control the flow of water. With a full bore design, Kuterlite quarter turn ballvalves are suitable for use in hot and cold waterservices, central heating systems, gas installations, oil lines, steam installations, compressed air lines, solvent and certain chemical supply lines withinthe domestic and commercial sectors. The range isavailable in sizes from 15mm to 28mm, and withparallel female ends from 1⁄4" BSP to 2" BSP.

i. Kuterlite quarter turn ball valves are suitable foruse with copper tube to BS EN 1057 (R250, R290),with PB and PEX pipe to BS 7291 Parts 2 and 3,with XPress Stainless System tube or stainless steeltube to BS EN 10312, DVGW GW541; and withXPress Carbon System tube or carbon steel tube toDIN 2394/NEN 1982 (on non-potable closed circuitsystems only).

j. Quarter turn ball valves have wear-resistant PTFEconical seals to ensure their durability over longperiods of time. A simple quarter-turn actionprovides a positive shut-off point and a readilyidentifiable on/off position, and a special antiblow-out design ensures the valve spindle does not detach from the body even under the mostextreme conditions. The valves are available withlevers or T-handles in plated brass or DZR alloy.Handle extension sets are available toaccommodate pipework insulation.

k. Other valves in the Kuterlite range include a gasplugcock in 15mm and a bibtap in 1⁄2".

Performance data for Kuterlite 600 and 900fittings assembled with stainless and carbon steeltube is given in Table 1, while performance for PEX and PB pipe is given in Table 5.

High performanceCompression fittings used with copper tube willwithstand pressures never reached under normalservice conditions.

FlexifitWhen assembled with copper tube to BS EN 1057,Kuterlite Flexifit connectors perform at 10 baracross a temperature range from 5°C to 90°C.

Kuterlite 700When assembled with medium densitypolyethylene pipe to BS 6572 or BS 6730 (withoutside diameters to BS 5556), Kuterlite 700fittings are suitable for use at a maximumsustained working pressure of 12 bar at 20˚C.

Kuterlite 1700When assembled with polyethylene pipe to BS 6572, BS 6730 and BS EN 12201:2003,Kuterlite 1700 fittings are suitable for use at amaximum sustained working pressure of 12 bar at 20˚C. They can also be used at thehigher temperatures given in Table 1 of the Codeof Practice 312 for plastics pipework(thermoplastic material, 1973).

Remove the compression nut and compressionring, then put the nut and then the ring on thetube. Insert the tube end up to the fitting's tubestop. Slide the ring and the nut down to the fittingbody.

Tighten the nut using your fingers until tight.

Tighten the nut further using high quality openended or adjustable spanners. Spanner flats areincorporated into the design of Kuterlite fittingbodies. The second spanner must be used toprevent the fitting rotating as the nut is tightened. For normal joint making, tighten the nut 1 turn(360°) for fittings in sizes from 6mm to 12mm, or3⁄4 turn (270°) for fittings in sizes from 15mm to54mm. A few drops of light oil on the threads willassist, especially on sizes 35mm and above. Whenjointing stainless steel or R220 copper tube somevariation may be needed – the nut may betightened further if necessary. Take care not to overtighten the compression nut, as this will not resultin a stronger joint and could lead to problems inservice.

The following instructions illustrate just howeasy it is to make a Kuterlite joint. These coverKuterlite 600, Kuterlite 900 and waste fittingsin sizes up to and including 54mm. Details ofhow to joint large size Kuterlite 900 fittings canbe found on page 17; and Kuterlite 700 and1700 fittings on page 18.

PreliminariesSelect the correct size of tube and fitting for thejob. Ensure that both are clean, in good conditionand free from damage and imperfections. If thetube is oval or damaged, use a re-rounding tool.

Copper tube should be of half-hard (R250) or hard(R290) temper. Annealed soft temper tube (R220)may be jointed using Kuterlite fittings. Refer topage 16 for further details.

Preparation

Cut the tube square using a rotary tube cutterwherever possible. If a hacksaw is used to cut thetube, a fine toothed blade should be used.

Remove any burr from the inside and outside ofthe tube ends using a fine toothed file or a S120deburring tool from the XPress accessories range.

Jointing copper tubeThere are two methods of assembling a Kuterlitejoint.

Insert the tube firmly into the compressionfitting, ensuring that the compression ring seatscentrally and that the tube makes firm contact withthe tube stop in the body of the fitting.

14 KUTERLITE - COMPRESSION FITTINGS

1. Ensure the jointingsurfaces and threadsremain clean and freefrom grit.

2. If there is a slight weepfrom the joint, this willbe readily corrected bythe application of PTFEtape or a smear of anapproved jointingcompound to the sealingfaces.

3. For advice on avoidanceof stress corrosioncracking see page 19.

4. A few drops of light oilon the threads will assistthe joint makingoperation, particularly forsizes 35mm and above.

5. More torque is required to tighten the compressionnuts of 42mm and 54mmfittings, so spanners noshorter than 750mm (30")should be used.

Kuterlite fittings can beeasily dismantled andremade without the loss ofjoint efficiency, providingthe components are keptclean and undamaged. Nosealing compound is usuallyneeded to remake aKuterlite joint, but careshould be taken not to trapparticles of foreign matterwhen reassembling. Whenre-tightening the couplingnut use just enough torqueto “nip” the ring. Do notover tighten. Kuterlitefittings can replace unionfittings where an infrequentdisconnection facility isrequired.

28mm, 2" use 54mm, 21⁄2" use 67mm. For otherKuterlite sizes up to and including 42mm, the useof an imperial by metric adaptor ring (K978C) willconvert any metric compression fitting to be usedwith imperial tube. A K910IM can be used toconvert sizes 22mm, 76mm and 108mm.

Jointing PEX and PB pipec. PEX pipe to BS 7291 Part 3 and PB pipe to BS 7291

Part 2 can be jointed using Kuterlite 600 orKuterlite 900 fittings in sizes up to 28mm. Toachieve sound joints, ensure the pipe is cut square, and is not damaged or scored in any way. Thecorrect sized pipe support liner must be fullyinserted into the PEX or PB pipe before jointingcommences. Use the appropriate liner asrecommended by the pipe manufacturer.

d. Jointing carbon steel and stainlesssteel tubeXPress Stainless System tube or other stainless steeltube to BS EN 10312 (formerly BS 4127), DVGW GW541; and XPress Carbon steel System tubeor other carbon steel tube to DIN 2394/ NEN 1982,can be jointed in sizes up to and including 28mmusing Kuterlite 600 or Kuterlite 900 compressionfittings. Carbon steel tubes are for use on nonpotable closed circuit systems only. To achievesound joints, the following precautions should betaken:

Ensure no flats or score marks are visible onthe outside surface of the tube. The weld beadshould not be visible.

A suitable jointing compound should be appliedto the sealing faces prior to tightening of thecompression nuts. Sealants with PTFE fillers arepreferred, with PTFE tape as an alternative.

Jointing half-hard thick walled R250copper tubeThis copper tube is significantly thicker than other varieties – refer to Table 1 on page 8 forspecifications. Special care needs to be takenduring installation. Follow steps one to threeopposite, but with the following additionalprecautions:

Ensure pipework is supported during and afterinstallation, as thick-walled copper tube is lesstolerant of stress on the joints. The pipeworkshould be clipped as close as possible to thefittings, particularly where long runs are involved.

Use spanners of the correct size and length.More torque is required to tighten Kuterlite fittingswith thick walled copper tube, and care should betaken to ensure neighbouring joints are notdisturbed.

Apply a light oil to the threads and chamferswhere possible. This will reduce assembly torqueand minimise the risk of damage. This is essentialon sizes above 28mm.

If a sealant is required, use a suitable PTFEbased compound, eg Loctite 577 or PTFE tape.

Jointing imperial copper tubeSelected Kuterlite 600 and Kuterlite 900 fittingscan be used in maintenance applications to connectcopper tube to former imperial sizes, such as BS 3931. For 3⁄8" use 12mm, 1⁄2" use 15mm, 1" use

We recommend all systemsare thoroughly tested uponcompletion. In hydraulicbased installations thesystem may be tested to 1.5 times the workingpressure of the system (seetables on page 9 for data). If higher test pressures arerequired advice should besought from YorkshireFittings.

On completion, compressedair pipeline systems must beproperly tested. The systemdesigner and installationcontractor must ensure safemethods are selected forsystem testing which willcomply with all currentHealth and Safetyregulations.

This may include testingcompressed air lines withfluids or compressed air at alimited pressure, or acombination. In any eventwe do not recommend themaximum working pressureof the product be exceededduring this procedure.

N.B. The maximumtemperature and pressurerange in any system isdictated by the componentwith the lowest performancerating.

SYSTEM TESTING

Kuterlite threaded connectorshave taper male or parallelfemale BSP threads, and themost popular sizes haveparallel male BSP threads. These are for jointingpipework to boilers, pumpsor backplate elbows. Fortaper male threads, a smallamount of inert jointingcompound or PTFE tapeshould be applied beforeinstallation. When installingparallel male threads, forexample to cisterns andcylinders, a good qualityjointing washer shouldbe used.

Jointing R220 soft copper tube.Kuterlite 600 and 900 fittings can be used to jointR220 soft copper tube in the applications in Table 1.

Using K900 fittings undergroundKuterlite 900 fittings can be used underground inconjunction with soft copper tube (R220) and an1870 Kufit adaptor. A hacksaw should be used tocut the tube – a tube cutter must not be used forthis application. All jointing surfaces must be keptclean throughout the process. Following preparationof the fitting and tube, assembly is carried out asfollows:

Slip the compression nut and compensatingring over the tube.

Flare the end of the tube using a clean K1822forming tool of the correct size by dealing a fewblows with a hammer. This operation can be madeeasier with the use of a few drops of light oil.

Insert the parallel end of the adaptor piece inthe fitting socket and locate the flared tube endonto the tapered face of the adaptor piece.

Slide the ring and the nut down to the fittingbody and first tighten by hand. Then, using spanners, tighten the nut one full turn. This is generallysufficient to provide a sound, leakproof joint.

JOINTING CHROMEPLATED COPPER TUBE

KUTERLITE - COMPRESSION FITTINGS

Kuterlite chrome platedfittings can be used onchrome plated copper tubewithout the need for anyadditional preparation.Assemble the joint in theusual way – refer toinstructions on page 14.

Jointing K947 and K948 reducersReducing sets can be used to convert the size of a socket in the fitting. Kuterlite K947 one-piecereducers and Kuterlite K948 reducing sets are usedas follows:

The use of a suitable PTFE based compound orPTFE tape between the fitting body and reducingset is required when assembling the reducer intothe fitting.

K947 only. Tighten the nut until sufficientforce is achieved to snap the reducer. This can beconfirmed by an audible click, which is part of thedesign and does not indicate a fault.

K948 only. Tighten the nut slowly until thetube is just prevented from rotating.

Tighten the nut a further 1⁄3 to 2⁄3 of a turn. An arrowhead stamped on the bottom of the nutprovides a reference point for this.

Only one reducing set can be used per end. Formultiple diameter reductions (eg 54mm x 28mm) or double diameter reductions (eg 35mm x 22mm),use only the correct reducing sets.

The compression flange should be parallel tothe face of the body to indicate that a sound jointhas been made.

If after assembling the joint in accordance withthe instructions above a slight weep is experienced- as occasionally may happen - it will readily becorrected by the application of a smear of anapproved sealing compound to the sealing faces.

Making a large size Kuterlite 900 joint67mm to 108mm

The same preliminaries and preparation guidelinesas Kuterlite 600 and Kuterlite 900 in sizes up to54mm apply.

Place the flange and compression ring ontothe tube.

Insert the tube firmly into the compressionfitting, ensuring that the compression ring seatscentrally in the fitting body and that the tubemakes firm contact with the tube stop.

Bring up the compression flange, and tightenthe nuts by hand. Using a spanner, continue totighten the nuts diagonally in increments of 1⁄2turn, to a total minimum of 2 turns and maximumof 21⁄2 turns. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE NUTS asthis may distort the flange or shear the nuts.

Push the prepared end of the pipe firmly intothe fitting socket until it contacts the stop withinthe body of the fitting.

Tighten the compression nut by hand, thenwith spanners for approximately 1 to 11⁄2 turnsbeyond the point at which the compression ringbegins to grip the pipe. The identification marks onthe coupling nut will aid this.

Making Kuterlite 700 and Kuterlite 1700 jointsThe same jointing procedure applies for bothKuterlite 700 and 1700 fittings.

PreliminariesSelect the correct size, type and class ofpolyethylene pipe, and ensure it is appropriate tothe application. Pipe support liners should also beof the correct size and class.

PreparationCut the pipe to length using a hacksaw with a

fine-toothed blade or pipe shears, ensuring the endis cut square.

Remove any burr from the inside and outside ofthe pipe ends with a sharp trimming knife.

Ensure the threads of the fitting body and nutare free of dirt and grit.

JointingRemove the compression nut and compression

ring from the fitting, then put the nut and then thering on the pipe. Put the compression ring inapproximately the correct position on the pipe. Thecompression rings of K700 fittings in 50mm and63mm have a distinct wedge shape. It is importantthey are correctly positioned on the pipe duringassembly, with the longest side being inserted intothe fitting socket.

Insert the pipe support liner into the bore ofthe pipe and push home until the flange is incontact with the end of the pipe. Where the pipeis at or near the minimum bore size, it may bedifficult to fully insert the liner due to interferencefrom the tapered portion of the liner (K700) orraised bead on the liner (K1700). In this case, werecommend a small chamfer is produced in the pipebore using a sharp knife.

Please ensure all metallicpipework systems complywith the equipotentialbonding requirements of thecurrent edition of the IKEelectrical wiring regulations(BS 7671: 2001).

Kuterlite 600 and Kuterlite900 fittings provideguaranteed electricalcontinuity when correctlyassembled with copper, stainless steel or carbonsteel tube.

Kuterlite 700 and Kuterlite1700 fittings assembledwith PE pipes, and Kuterlite600 and Kuterlite 900fittings assembled with PEXor PB pipe, do not provideelectrical continuity.

After all plumbing work hasbeen completed, alwaysensure continuity checks areconducted by a qualifiedelectrician in accordancewith regulations.

EQUIPOTENTIALBONDING

Here are details of some of the specific designconsiderations it is important to take account ofwhen designing and installing pipework systemsincorporating Kuterlite fittings.

Design considerationsSome contracts may require the use of proprietarychemicals to cleanse and flush pipework before fullcommissioning. Kuterlite is compatible with aselection of products – contact us to find out more.

Pipeline supportsPipelines should always be constructed so that the joints are under neutral or compressive stress.Clipping to support the assembled pipeline isessential and tube manufacturer’s recommendationsshould be adhered to. Yorkshire Fittings offers awide range of pipe clips and brackets to ensuresafe and secure installations. Pipe joist clips arealso available, and are designed to protect pipeworkagainst accidental piercing when nailing or screwingdown floorboards. For data on the spacing ofsupporting brackets, refer to the tables below.

Stress corrosion cracking Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a phenomenonthat occurs occasionally with brass compressionfittings. It is almost always introduced duringinstallation, either from over-tightening of fittingsor contamination from a corrosive substance.

The usual corrosive substance involved in SCC isammonia or ammoniacal compounds, which can befound in cleaning fluids, refrigeration gases, sewagewaste products, building materials, insulatingmaterials (especially foams) and flame and smokeretarding treatments. An essential ingredient in the

SCC process is moisture. Moisture on the fitting orpipework allows the corrosive substance to collectand become more concentrated. This is a particularproblem in chilled water installations, whereinsulating materials allow the condensed moistureto be retained and kept in close contact with thefitting surface.

Yorkshire Fittings Ltd does not recommend the useof brass components in chilled water applications.Instead, we recommend fittings made from SCCresistant or immune materials, such as copper orgunmetal. Fittings from our XPress, Tectite, Yorkshireor Endex ranges are the preferred products for chilledwater applications. If compression fittings are usedthen they should be assembled exactly in accordancewith our published instructions and securely boundby a moisture barrier such as Densotape® toprevent moisture build up on the fitting.

The following installation practices should beadhered to when installing compression fittings inorder to avoid SCC:

f. 1. Do not overtighten brass components.2. Use correctly fitting spanners.3. Use a drop or two of light oil on the threads of

fittings of sizes 35mm and above.4. Avoid contaminating the threads or nuts with

jointing compounds.5. Use parallel threaded adaptors to avoid stressing

the female threaded ends.

g. Minimise the risk of contamination from a potentialcorrosive substance. Wrapping susceptible fittings ina vapour barrier or applying impermeable paints canbe helpful in preventing contact with a corrosivesubstance.

System designconsiderations

Page 20: Compression Fittings 15263411 6Compression Fittings

length of stainless steel tube carrying hot water at 60˚C will increase in length by almost 6.5mmwhen heated from an ambient temperature of 20˚C.

Assuming that temperature cycling of the system is 20˚C, there will be a continuous cycle ofexpansion and contraction of 3.2mm. Refer toTable 3 opposite.

Expansion of carbon steel System tubeCarbon steel System tube has a coefficient oflinear expansion of 12 x 10-6/°C. For example, a 10 metre length of carbon steel System tubecarrying hot water at 60°C will increase in lengthby almost 5mm when heated from an ambienttemperature of 20°C.

What’s more, assuming that temperature cycling of the system is 20°C, then there will be acontinuous cycle of expansion and contraction of2.4mm. Refer to Table 4 opposite.

Correct anchorings. Always ensure the spur used to anchor the branch

of a tee or connect to a radiator is long enough toallow normal thermal movement. Not doing thiscan lead to installation failure.

Covered pipeworkMaking provision for thermal movement is vitalwhere pipework of any material is installed underscreed or plaster, or passes through brick orblockwork.

The preferred practice is to pass tubes and pipesthrough sleeves or conduits or to lay them in ductssurrounded by loose, non-rigid material such asvermiculite or glass wool. For further information, consult the standard BS 6700:1997.

Local Water AuthorityIt’s wise to take the advice of the local waterauthority into account when it comes to pipeworkaccessibility.

Copper tube bendingPortable bending machines are ideal for coppertubes up to 28mm. Most machines bend the tubebetween matched formers and back guides thatsupport the outside diameter (OD) of the tube.

InsulationFor all Kuterlite installations, we recommend youadhere to the insulation requirements for coppertube as specified by The Water Supply (WaterFittings) Regulations 1999. These requirements areequally applicable to stainless steel and carbonsteel tube.

Thermal movementThermal movement is a major consideration whendesigning plumbing and heating systems.

Pipework systems expand and contract with changes in temperature. If they are fixed too rigidly and their movement restricted theinstallation will be subject to stress, which mustbe avoided. It is therefore important to take theeffect of this thermal movement into account when designing and installing plumbing andheating systems.

Stress concentrations between “fixed points”,typically found at radiators, valves and otherfittings should be avoided.

Expansion of copper tubeCopper has a coefficient of linear expansion of 17 x 10-6/°C. For example, a 10 metre length ofcopper tube carrying hot water at 60°C will increase in length by almost 7mm when heatedfrom an ambient temperature of 20°C.

Assuming that temperature cycling of the system is20°C, there will be a continuous cycle of expansionand contraction of 3.4mm. Refer to Table 1 opposite.

Expansion of Tectite-PEX barrier pipeTectite-PEX barrier pipe has a coefficient of linear expansion of 1.5 x 10-4/°C at 20°C toapproximately 2.8 x 10-4/°C at 82°C. As anexample, we recommend you allow for 12.5mmexpansion on a length of pipe when installedat 20°C for use up to 82°C. Refer to Table 2 opposite.

Expansion of PB pipeFor details of the expansion of PB pipe refer to themanufacturers instructions.

Expansion of stainless steel System tubeStainless steel tube has a coefficient of linearexpansion of 16 x 10-6/˚C. For example, a 10 metre

avoid any wrinkling and flattening that can affectflow conditions. Using adjustable bending machines(which allow the pressure on the back guide to beadjusted) will ensure perfect bends every time solong as the root (inside) bending radius is at least3 times the outside diameter of the tube.

This eliminates the risk of the tube wallcollapsing. The point at which the bendingpressure is exerted must be maintained at thecorrect distance in front of the formers’ point ofsupport. It’s also important to keep formers andguides well lubricated. Bending tubes correctly will
