Computer Assignment #1Data Summaries
Marketing 342 -- Professor Liechty
Name ________________________ Section ______________________
The following computer assignment is an extension of our first computer lab. In this assignment you will demonstrate your ability to summarize data using SPSS. This assignment represents 10% of your total grade.
The following data has been gathered from a random sample of 32 males and females between the ages of 18 and 78. The data for this compute lab can be found on the course web page: http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/j/c/jcl12/Assignments.htm. In addition to the categories used in the lab, this study includes information about the individual's education level and about their Internet usage.
Survey Questions:age: age in years
income: personal income in $1,000's
Gender: 1 = female; 2 = male
enjyshop: shopping enjoyment
A likert scale item -- "I enjoy shopping"
1 = strongly disagree2 = disagree3 = neither agree or disagree4 = agree5 = strongly agree
credcard: credit card most frequently used
1 = American Express2 = Discover3 = Master Card4 = Visa
edlevel: years of formal education
useweb: 0 = never used the Internet; 1 = have used the Internet
Assignment Questions:
1. On average do males tend to have higher education level than females? If we were to survey another randomly selected subset of the population do you think that your answer would change?
2. Which credit cards do Internet users prefer? What question should we have asked in order to determine if people with more education tend to shop more on the Internet when compared with people with less education?
3. What type of data summary would you do in order to determine if it pays (i.e. if an individual has a larger salary) to get more education?
Load the Data:
Save the data set, called shopping2.xls, to your computer hard drive. Open SPSS and then load this data into SPSS. (Note that this data has labels and when you load the data you will need to select the Read Variable Names option.)
Assignment Tasks:
Perform the following data summaries. Save these summaries in a Word Document and bring a printed copy to class. You can copy part of an SPSS output file by clicking on the object (e.g. a graph or summary table) typing ctrl c and then clicking in a Word document and clicking ctrl v.
In addition, after you have performed these summaries, answer the three assignment questions. Base your answers on the results of your summaries and include these answers in the above Word Document.
Data Summaries:
1. Convert the variable education level into a categorical variable with three levels.
High School = 12 years or lessCollege = 13 to 16 yearsAdvanced = 17 or more years
Select Transform/Recode/Into Different Variables
You will get the following dialog box.
Highlight the edlevel and click the arrow button to move edlevel into the Input Variable -> Output variable window. Then type the new name that you want in the Name window, for example catedlev. Then click on Change. Then click on Old and New Values …
On the Old Value side of the dialog box, select Range Lowest through [] and enter 12 in the box. On the New Value side of the dialog box select Value [] and enter a 1 in the box.
Select Add.
On the Old Value side of the dialog box, select Range [] through [] and enter 13 in the left box and 16 in the right box. On the New Value side of the dialog box select Value [] and enter a 2 in the box. Click on Add.
On the Old Value side of the dialog box, select Range [] through highest and enter 17 in the box. On the New Value side of the dialog box select Value [] and enter a 3 in the box.
Select Continue.
In the Recode into Different Variable dialog box click on Ok. You will now have a categorical variable, catedlev, which breaks edlevel into three categories.
Now for the labeling. On the bottom left hand corner of the data sheet select the tab Variable View.
Highlight the catedlev by Values cell. This cell will say none and when it is highlighted it will include a small box with three dots.
Click on the small box with three dots.
In the Value Label dialog box, enter 1 in the Value field and High School in the Value Label field. Select Add. In the Value Label dialog box, enter 2 in the Value field and College in the Value Label field. Select Add. In the Value Label dialog box, enter 3 in the Value field and Advanced in the Value Label field. Select Add. Select OK.
2. Following the same steps as used for 1), create appropriate labels for the useweb, gender and credcard variables.
3. Generate and report descriptive statistics for the edlevel variable.
Select Analyze; Descriptive Statistics and Descriptives.
Select edlevel and click the arrow button in the middle of the dialog box. Click OK.
4. Generate and report box plots for edlevel by gender and for edlevel by useweb.
Select Graphs and Boxplot
Select Define.
Select edlevel and put in Variable box; select gender and put in Category Axis box. Click OK.
5. Generate and report frequency statistics for the catedlev category variable, which you created in step 1, and for the useweb variable.
Select Analyze; Descriptive Statistics and Frequencies.Select catedlev and useweb and click the arrow button in the middle of the dialog box. Click OK.
6. Generate and report a bar chart for useweb category variable and for the catedlev variable, which you created in step 1.
Select Graphs and Bar.Select Define.
Select useweb and put in Category Axis box. Click OK.
7. Generate and report a pie chart useweb category variable and for the catedlev variable, which you created in step 1.
Select Graphs and Pie.Select Define.
Select useweb and put in Category Axis box. Click OK.
8. Generate and report a cross tabulation table for the useweb by credcard variables.
Select Analyze; Descriptive Statistics and Crosstabs.Select useweb and put in Rows(s) box and credcard and put in Column(s) box.Click OK.
9. Generate and report a grouped bar chart for the useweb by credcard variables.
Select Graphs and Bar.Select Clustered.Select Define.
Select credcard and put in Category Axis box; select useweb and put in Define Clusters by box.Select Ok.
