COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING: FRESHMEN

YOUR DEGREE: THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN COMPUTING (BA-COMP)

OVERVIEW OF CSCE DEGREES• We have three degrees:

• BS in Computer Science: CPSC• BS in Computer Engineering – CS track: CECN

• Two tracks of Computer Engineering with similar curricula. We advise CECN. ECEN advises CEEN.

• BA in Computing: COMP• Degree requirements differ for CPSC, CECN, and COMP

• Advising:• Staff list and contacts at

https://engineering.tamu.edu/cse/advising/undergraduate-advisors.html• Official emails sent to your student account ([email protected])• Advising announcements sent to mailing lists

• CSCE Undergraduate Program information• https://engineering.tamu.edu/cse/academics/degrees/undergraduate/ind

COMPUTING DEGREE (BA 2019-2020)

❖ Courses requiring a C or better are listed❖ Courses that can overlap with ICD/CD can be

found at core.tamu.edu❖ Visit

https://engineering.tamu.edu/cse/academics/degrees/undergraduate/bachelor-of-arts-computing.html for details on❖ Supporting/emphasis area❖ Technical electives

COMPUTING TECHNICAL ELECTIVES

COMPUTING DEGREE FLOWThe most important thing to note with this degree plan flow is the order of course prerequisites. When planning your classes each semester, and for your whole degree, you need to make sure that all prerequisites are being met. Course prequisites can be found in the course catalog, and in the details on Howdy.

BA-COMP V. BS-CPSC• No common freshman engineering year• Identical foundational CSCE courses at 100, 200, and 300 level, with the

addition of CSCE 110/111

• Fewer 300-400 level CSCE electives required• 29 credits of “concentration electives”

• To be used to develop a second specialty; Computing + x

• Fewer MATH credits required, more choices• Fewer Science credits required, more choices

• Additional communications/English courses required• Capstone is required beginning in 2019; in 2018 it is optional and can be

one of the CSCE electives if taken• Student will file a ”supplementary degree plan”; form still being developed

• Accredited through SACS (not ABET accredited although we believe that the degree would qualify)

USEFUL INFORMATION

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS• I have AP scores that are eligible for credit

• AP scores must be reported directly to Texas A&M University

• Math Minor• CECN is one MATH 4xx class away from the Math minor. CPSC is also

only one or two MATH 4xx classes away if you take two MATH 3xx courses in CPSC.

• Where do I go for advising?• Faculty advisors: Dr. Furuta - Computer Science & Computing; Dr. Sarin -

Computer Engineering • Staff advisors: Dr. Jennifer Runnels, Maria Blandon, and Tara Dean• You can make appointments through your Howdy Navigate link• Office location: 101C EABA• Email: [email protected] (please include UIN and major

when emailing our office)

USEFUL LINKS• CSE website: www.cse.tamu.edu (see particularly the Undergraduate

Programs)

• Howdy: howdy.tamu.edu

• UG Catalog: catalog.tamu.edu/undergraduate• AP, IB, Credit by exam (under General Information->Admissions)• Sample programs for CPSC, CECN and COMP (Under Engineering->Computer Science

and Engineering); these are very optimistic and don’t reflect individual circumstances

• Core curriculum: core.tamu.edu• See site for classes in these areas: Creative Arts; American History;

Government/Political Science; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Language Philosophy and Culture. DO NOT use other categories.

• International and Cultural Diversity (ICD)/Cultural Discourse (CD) requirements: icd.tamu.edu

• Testing Services: testing.tamu.edu

• Transfer course equivalency (link available on Howdy): https://compass-ssb.tamu.edu/pls/PROD/bwxkwtes.P_TransEquivMain

• Student rules: student-rules.tamu.edu

ACADEMIC DEFICIENCY

• Scholastic deficiency: acquiring term GPA < 2.0 or cumulative GPA < 2.0 (other situations possible)

• Student must remove deficiency within 1-3 semesters to avoid being dismissed from the Department or the College

• To view the College of Engineering’s policy on probation and dismissal, please visit https://engineering.tamu.edu/academics/_files/_documents/enge.pdf

DEGREE PLANNERS AND EVALUATIONS

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PLANNERS• Students are required to get their degree plan approved by the fall

following their entry, or the semester after they reach 30 credits (or they will be blocked from registration in the following semester)

• Student guide available on Howdy

• Template with courses available as a starting point, along with our degree planner guide pdfs.

• Tips• We will hold degree planner workshops to help students on their plans• Prerequisite Check tab: check prerequisites are met• Degree Evaluation tab: check that you have courses planned for every degree

requirement• Include comments explaining any unmet requirements

• E.g., planner not recognizing approved course• Some electives (CPSC/CECN/COMP) and supporting area coursework (CPSC) may not be

recognized by the planner

DEGREE EVALUATIONS• You will frequently find it useful to run a degree evaluation to

determine what classes are credited and which remain• This is what your graduation is based on, not your planner.

• Select degree evaluation in Howdy

• Select your catalog year

• Select your upper division major: “BS CPSC” or “BS CECN [CSCE]” or “BA COMP”

• Follow the links through to generate the request

• Select “Detail Requirements”

• Note that items requiring decisions by our office won’t be shown until we are able to submit a manual request. These include courses transferred “by title,” supporting area electives (in CPSC), etc. These courses will be shown in the “Work Not Applied”

REGISTRATION TO-DOLIST

REGISTRATION TO DO LIST• Registration will proceed much faster if you:

• Decide courses you want to take

• Find sections on Howdy with available seats that fit your schedule

• Note the 5-digit CRN number of each section you want to take

• Pay attention to ALL times and days listed

REGISTRATION, CONTINUED

• We will provide you a list of specific classes to take, based on what we see on your incoming transcript

• We are reserving seats for you in CSCE courses, but we cannot do that for other departments

• We know that this will be a frustrating process, and we share in your frustration. I promise – next time will be better!

CLEAR YOUR HOLDS

• Tuition Rate Selection: select tuition rate code code from “My Finances” tab on howdy

• Bacterial Meningitis Immunization: Contact ADMI at 979-845-1060

• Check-In at ISS:• http://iss.tamu.edu/checkin_orientation/checkin.asp

• Phone: 979-845-1151
