MA Prompt #1 Storytelling across Multiple Channels

Overview: The purpose of this prompt is to fulfill the requirements of the Capstone Course Comstrat

701. The focus centers upon Target, their bath products and the audience segment of Millennial

consumers. I crafted promotional messages designed to inspire and otherwise motivate potential and

existing Target customers. Four product types were crafted into four social media platforms each.

Part 1: Research and Profiling

Target Audience Profile: create a profile of one type of audience that you will target with your

messaging.

Audience Type: The consumer with the greatest potential for Target and their bath products are

the Millennials born between 1981 and 2000. They are a growing commercial force that

influences trends. They grew up in a digital environment. The internet is primary source of

socialization. They shop, explore and interact with products and marketing campaigns through

social media. It is estimated that they will be spending about $200 billion annually by 2017

(Solomon, 2015). This millennial shopper cares about the values the company supports. It has

been suggested that almost 50% of millennials would be more willing to make a purchase from a

company if their purchase supports a cause (Future Cast.com, 2017, Schawbel, 2015).

Audience Awareness: A large segment of millennials grew up shopping at Target. The image

conveyed by the logo is associated with basic quality products at reasonable prices. Bath

products are often considered essentials. Target is working on Millennial oriented strategies like

brand collaboration (Tirico, 2016). Promoting quality along with an emphasis on sustainable

natural resources. may be a motivating factor (Kline, 2014). . According to the NPD group,

younger Millennials are less likely than older Millennials to shop online (Cohen, 2017).

Goal, Needs and Motivations: Millennials will pay attention to ads that are paired with a cause

with which they can identify. They may not buy as much, but they are looking for a quality

product. Great qualities to meet their needs with prices that meet their budgets are also

motivating factors.

Challenges and Frustrations: Target research shows that Millennials want products in stock, a

good store experience and efficient online shopping. One of the barriers that they face is cost.

They want good products at reasonable prices. They are also looking for environmentally

sustainable products. They want the company to be active in the community (Schawbel, 2015).

Media Usage & Preferences:

o Google data suggests that Millennials become aware of products through online media

and advertising (Google Consumer Barometer 2017). Positive interactions with a brand

help to build brand awareness and loyalty.

o Millennials are motivated to find the best quality for the best price. They often

comparison shop and ask friends. 55% of Millennials use search engines to learn about

products (Consumer Barometer with Google (2017).

o According to Schawbel (2015), authenticity is important to millennials. They tend to

ignore the spin. They tend to avoid banner advertisements on Facebook. Instead they

prefer content marketing to provide information, entertainment and value (DeMers,

2016).

o Posts with images, questions, invitations to respond-like answering a question. They like

the opportunity to produce user generated responses as social proof. They are strongly

influenced by peers.

Campaign Tone: The tone will be upbeat and will combine messages of the value of organic products

linked to company’s global reach to emphasize sustainability of natural resources. The promotion of

bath products that are organic has appeal to the target audiences composed of Millennials. Imagery

showing the product in a sustainable environment will link the message.

Competitor Products:

Identify one competitor: J.C. Penny

Based on their social media postings, blogs or message forums – what are their customers saying about them?

o Similar bath products: 93% of 1,932 reviews are impressed with the quality of the towels (http://www.jcpenney.com/jcpenney-home-solid-bath-towels/prod.jump?ppId=pp5002351376)

o Twitter - https://twitter.com/jcpenney/status/707604260586848256. Product evaluations good.

o Consumer Affairs Social Media website reported problems with customer service related to returns, exchanges and quality of products (https://www.consumeraffairs.com/retail/jc_penney.html). 1,089 Reviews

Promotional assets (current visibility – advertising, PR, awareness) How visible is the company and/or product? Would you say they are a well-known and recognizable product? Why?

COMSTRAT 701 Capstone Prompt #1: Storytelling Across Multiple Channels Spring 2017

Robert Robinson

3

o The promotional assets of J.C. Penney’s have been well established since 1902. They are well known for their brand as good quality and reasonable prices. They are very visible in social media. This January it announced that it is closing 1, 014 stores. It is struggling with lower sales. They are closing the stores that don’t meet the brand standard (Wahba, 2017). They are presently struggling with the customer brand image as antiquated (Moskowitz, 2015).

How do you perceive this company’s overall quality – in customer service, production, in delivery? Good or bad? Either way – please elaborate.

o J.C. Penney is one of the standard department stores with basic merchandise and

reasonable prices. The image of an in-store purchase is difficult as there are usually long waits. Also, service for returns or problems is not as efficient as it could be. That is for both in-store and online orders.

Part Two: Campaign Message Development

An important step in campaign message development is brainstorming ideas, identifying key words and

phrases, articulating messaging basics using 5W’s (inverted pyramid), and identifying key features and

benefits.

Campaign theme ideas: Millennials care about the values associated with a company. They tend to

integrate their beliefs and causes into their purchases. The main campaign idea would be hashtag to

promote Target Bath Products and their emphasis on organic sustainability.

Key words and phrases

Illustrate the strengths of Target’s bath product line

o organic products choices

o solid construction

o good color selection

o durable

o simple and sleek designs

Summarize unique attributes of Target as a company and retail merchant

o Target knows their customers and what they are looking for.

o Target provides the products at reasonable prices.

o Target strives to support healthy living for its customers and its product partners.

o Target offers products made with an emphasis on sustainability of natural resources.

o Target provides the service you expect: online or in the store.

Campaign 5W’s (inverted pyramid) Information and structure is prioritized through the inverted pyramid.

Who: Provide more detail about your target audience such as age range, gender, education level, marital status and other demographic information.

The target audience for this campaign message is the Millennial consumer born between 1981 and 2000, representing an age range from 17 to 36. To maximize campaign ROI, it would focus on both genders. Message development would include college, professional and homemaker appeals. The older millennials are starting families. Most are at the beginning of their careers with lower incomes.

What: What makes the line of bath products unique?

Target is aware of the importance of sustainability in natural resources. Millennials have been educated about the value of sustainability (Kline, 2014). The line of bath products offered by Target represents this unique value. They are made with organic materials and with simple clean lines. They represent “Clean by Design.”

Where: Where can customers purchase the bath products? In stores? Online? Be specific.

All the organic bath items reviewed here are online. They can be shipped to the customer’s address or to their local store. It appears that a wider range of products are offered online then in stores.

When: How can you create a sense of urgency for customers (i.e. date range for offer? coupon code? require customers subscribe to email?)

I would add a date range with the discount currently being offered. I would also offer added benefits to customers to sign up for email offers.

Why: Why should customers buy these bath products? What is their incentive?

These bath products represent the pairing of simple clean design for the bath with a range of good price values. Buying from Target helps to sustain our natural resources while meeting your needs in the bath (Kline, 2014). This incentive is combined with the added discounts for a limited time only.

Product: Bamboo Bath Mat

Post:

Mary H. from Wisconsin shares her bathroom design with the Bamboo Bath Mat

I took the invitation to share ideas with the Target Blog. I live in a small home in Wisconsin. I have a

standard, relatively small bathroom. Everything is white. I wanted it change. Let me explain. After

college I landed a great job which included some travel. I loved the look of the spa-like bathrooms that

some of the hotels offered, especially the clean sleek lines. No clutter, awesome towels and a tropical

feeling. I am 27 and just starting out so I don’t have “decorating” funds. Yet I wanted a change. I read

the Target Facebook page on how to use your creativity to create your own space. So I did “check” out

the Target online options. I noticed the emphasis on sustainable products. I did not know Target was

leading the way in environmental sensitivity. I just thought of them as some big corporate entity. In

college all the professors talked about was the environment, so naturally my friends and I are aware of

how products can chemically hurt or damage the environment here and around the world. I was excited

to see so many environmentally friendly products. I included accessories like the bamboo bathroom

mat, a bamboo toothbrush holder, bamboo soap dish and bamboo toilet bowl cleaner. What great

design for ordinary products – and they were made of bamboo which is a renewable fiber. I added a

coffee colored towel collection to top it off. I brought in some natural twigs and put them in a vase on

the counter. I added a rainforest picture to create the “mood”. In fact I found it on the Target

Instagram. I downloaded it, printed and framed it in a woody type frame from Target. I did all this on

my lunch hour at work. I found everything online and had it shipped to my house. Now when I

stumbled into the shower in the mornings I come out in my tropical rainforest bathroom, more peaceful

and ready to start the day. Thank you, Target. Mary H.

Jay, H. from Georgia Shares his Bathroom Design.

Jay H. from Georgia recently redesigned his bathroom with Target.com products. Jay wrote, “I just got

my first condo with a new job in Atlanta. I wanted to have that bachelor pad look. In college our rooms

were chaos. Now I was going for a more polished simple look. I was reading the Facebook post and the

Instagram post about bathroom design. Before I read these posts I never gave it a second thought. So I

had a look online. I liked the look of the framed mirrors in the bathroom, so I went for it. Then I added

the organic towels in white. I like the fact that they are cotton and environmentally sustainable. I tried

to stick with the masculine natural look. I did go with the bamboo bathmat. I don’t have a big

bathroom, but at least I feel like I have a more relaxing spot to shower and shave. I thought the Target

selection of products was reasonably priced within my budget. I looked online first and then I walked

around the store near my home. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful. In the end I ended up buying

all my products online. My girlfriend was surprised that I could even pull it together. I have never

“designed” anything like a room before. I would just put a sofa, some chairs and a TV. Now when I come

home from work I like a more relaxing place. I got many of my accessories on sale at Target. Now I am

going to take my time and look at upgrading other rooms in my condo. With Target’s prices and good

quality products I can make it my own. I noticed in a Twitter post Target is donating funds to physical

education programs in local communities. I like that they are giving back. A win-win for all of us!”
