May/June 2014 District 19A Newsletter - District Governor Peter Cheng

Dear fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,

We are now concluding our goals for the 2013/2014 Lions’ year. I am especially thankful to my cabinet members for diligently working to achieve the goals we set for this year. I feel that we have exceeded our expectations. I congratulate all who have worked so hard this year. We manage to rise above the extreme deficit in membership at the beginning of the year. This took focus, commitment with everyone coming together with their best effort.

I look forward to participate in the charter event of our newest addition, the Vancouver Diamond Millennial Lions club. We would extend an invitation to all of our clubs to join in their celebration in September.

Have a great summer and be proud that our District has achieved such success.

Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog Guides

The District 19A Lions hosted the Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog Guides on Sunday May 25th. Club members from the Vancouver Marpole-Grandview Lions and Cathay New Century Lions made up the organizing committee. The event was held at Garry Point Park in Richmond and was the second year the Walk has been held at this location.

Volunteers and walkers braved the rainy weather to show their support and to walk for the Dog Guides!

The event was a success and just over $10,000 was raised for Lions Foundation of Canada.

The organizing committee would like to take the opportunity to thank 19H DG Kenny Lee and the District 19H Lions Clubs; Vancouver Pacific Lions Club; Zone A7 Boat Cruise; all participants and volunteers! Also, special recognition is given to Lion Ping Mah of the Vancouver Shaughnessy Lions for collecting the most donations!

Tug of War with a 60 tonne plane for charity

ORBIS Canada is an affiliate of ORBIS International, a global non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to saving sight worldwide. ORBIS prevents and treats blindness through hands-on training. Its public health education improves access to quality eye care, and advocates partnership with local health care organizations.

The ORBIS Plane Pull for Sight is a unique fundraising event that showcases teamwork and strength as teams made up of 25 people to compete in pulling a 60-tonne 757 FedEx cargo airplane for 12 feet, the equivalent of dragging 120 adult polar bears or 35 Buick Regal cars! Dr. Simon Holland, a Director of ORBIS Canada, stated, “The funds raised will go directly to help its efforts in eliminating childhood blindness in the world.”

The fifth annual Plane Pull for Sight Event in support of ORBIS Canada’s sight saving efforts was successfully completed on Sunday, June 22 at the Vancouver International Airport, FedEx Airport Apron. The Plane Pull attracted an audience of diverse ages and cultures and united through their passion for helping those in needs.

Vancouver Legacy Lions Club formed up a team of 25 Lions members to participate in the Tug of War with the 60 tonne plane, with others cheering behind the scenes and supporting their effort. The Vancouver Legacy Lions Club raised and donated $13,240.00 to the ORBIS Event for its International flying hospitals for eye disease. The said Event with 13 participating teams raised $25,000.00 in total of which the Vancouver Legacy Lions Club alone raised and donated more than half of its total contribution.

This ORBIS Event enabled the Vancouver Legacy Lions Club to show its teamwork and fundraising capabilities and received the award as the Top Fundraising Team. Without successful teamwork, it would not have been able to participate in the ORBIS Event and proudly attained the outstanding accomplishment of the Top Team.

The Vancouver Legacy Lions Club wishes to thank each and every participating member for their time, effort and contribution.
