Homeostasis

Originally developed and defined by Claude Bernard, homeostasis (Greek ὅμοιος,

homoios, "like" and ἵστημι, histemi, "immobile") is the ability that can have any system

(open or closed) to maintain its operating balance despite the constraints that are

external.

According to Walter Bradford Cannon, "homeostasis is the dynamic balance that

keeps us alive”. Homeostasis is the maintenance of all the physico-chemical

parameters of the body that must remain relatively constant (glucose, temperature, salt

levels in the blood, etc..).

Sodium & Potassium

The sodium-potassium pump or Na +-K + ATPase is a transmembrane protein which enzymatic activity uses

energy from the breakdown of ATP to ADP and inorganic phosphate to transport potassium and sodium ions

against their concentration gradient. It plays a role in maintaining the resting potential of nerve cells, and

cardiac muscle. The pump is used to exchange the sodium ions (Na +) from the intracellular medium with

potassium ions K + from the extracellular medium in a specific ratio (3 Na + / K + 2). This pump is

responsible for the recovery of the initial equilibrium after an action potential.

Calcium

The calcium pump or Ca2 +-ATPase is a transmembrane protein found in most eukaryotic cell membranes.

It works through the hydrolysis of ATP. It consists of 1029 amino acids and has a molecular weight of 112

kDa. This pump has ten transmembrane domains and is found both on the cytoplasmic membrane of the

cells and in the membranes of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. These vesicles are intracellular stores of calcium

atom (ion) essential to the proper functioning of muscle contraction.
