Page 6: Conclusion Paragraphs

Answer the question "So What?"

Show your readers why this paper was important.

Show them that your paper was meaningful and useful.

Page 7: Conclusion Paragraphs

Synthesize, don't summarize

Don't simply repeat things that were in your paper. They have read it.

Show them how the points you made and the support and examples you used were not random, but fit together.

Page 8: Conclusion Paragraphs

Redirect your readers

Give your reader something to think about, perhaps a way to use your paper in the "real" world.

If your introduction went from general to specific, make your conclusion go from specific to general.

Page 9: Conclusion Paragraphs

Create a new meaning

You don't have to give new information to create a new meaning.

By demonstrating how your ideas work together, you can create a new picture.

Often the sum of the paper is worth more than its parts.

Strategies

Echoing the introductionChallenging the readerLooking to the futurePosing questions

Page 11: Conclusion Paragraphs

Echoing the introduction

can be a good strategy if it is meant to bring the reader full-circle.

If you begin by describing a scenario, you can end with the same scenario as proof that your essay was helpful in creating a new understanding.

Introduction

From the parking lot, I could see the towers of the castle of the Magic Kingdom standing stately against the blue sky. To the right, the tall peak of The Matterhorn rose even higher. From the left, I could hear the jungle sounds of Adventureland. As I entered the gate, Main Street stretched before me with its quaint shops evoking an old-fashioned small town so charming it could never have existed. I was entranced. Disneyland may have been built for children, but it brings out the child in adults.

Page 13: Conclusion Paragraphs

Conclusion

I thought I would spend a few hours at Disneyland, but here I was at 1:00 A.M., closing time, leaving the front gates with the now dark towers of the Magic Kingdom behind me. I could see tired children, toddling along and struggling to keep their eyes open as best they could. Others slept in their parents' arms as we waited for the parking lot tram that would take us to our cars. My forty-year-old feet ached, and I felt a bit sad to think that in a couple of days I would be leaving California, my vacation over, to go back to my desk. But then I smiled to think that for at least a day I felt ten years old again.

Challenging the reader

you are helping the reader to redirect the information in the paper, and they may apply it to their own lives.

Page 15: Conclusion Paragraphs

Example

Though serving on a jury is not only a civic responsibility but also an interesting experience, many people still view jury duty as a chore that interrupts their jobs and the routine of their daily lives. However, juries are part of America's attempt to be a free and just society. Thus, jury duty challenges us to be interested and responsible citizens.

Page 16: Conclusion Paragraphs

Looking to the future

can emphasize the importance of your paper or redirect the readers' thought process.

It may help the reader apply the new information to their lives or see things more globally.

Page 17: Conclusion Paragraphs

Without well-qualified teachers, schools are little more than buildings and equipment. If higher-paying careers continue to attract the best and the brightest students, there will not only be a shortage of teachers, but the teachers available may not have the best qualifications. Our youth will suffer. And when youth suffers, the future suffers.

Page 18: Conclusion Paragraphs

Posing questions

Posing questions, either to your readers or in general, may help your readers gain a new perspective on the topic

It may also bring your main ideas together to create a new meaning.

Page 19: Conclusion Paragraphs

Example

Campaign advertisements should help us understand the candidate's qualifications and positions on the issues. Instead, most tell us how stupid or dishonest the opposing candidate is, or they present general images of the candidate as a family person or God-fearing American. Do such advertisements contribute to creating an informed electorate or a people who choose political leaders the same way they choose soft drinks and soap?

Summary Statement

an effective way to start your concluding paragraph

helps to drive home the ideas you've expressed in your essay

Page 21: Conclusion Paragraphs

Summary Statements

Thesis Statement: Many Americans are buying the Toyota Corolla because of its competitive price, fuel economy, and high resale value.

Summary Statement: Reasonable pricing, low miles per gallon, and an attractive resale value have all contributed to the popularity of the Toyota Corolla in today's market.

Page 22: Conclusion Paragraphs

Summary Statements

Thesis Statement: San Francisco is a stimulating place to visit because of its magnificent location, its theaters and art galleries, and its many fine restaurants.

Summary Statement: If you love beautiful surroundings, world class theater and art, and an exquisite meal, then San Francisco is the place for you.

Anecdote intro

In Lake Wobegone Days, humorist Garrison Keillor tells of a retired dentist in a little Minnesota town. He sits in a fishing boat much of theday. "Open wide," Dr. Nute says to the fish. "This may sting a little bit. Okay. Now bite down." Unfortunately, not all retired persons are so easily able to continue their once interesting professions in some form, as Dr. Nute has. Retirees have a high death rate within the first six months after retirement, apparently because of boredom, and psychologists suggest three ways to prevent it.

Page 25: Conclusion Paragraphs

Conclusion

It’s good to know that by doing regular physical activity, eating a balanced diet, and sustaining meaningful relationships, retired people can stay healthy and enjoy a pleasant, meaningful retirement. Seniors don’t have to spend all their days fishing in a pond the way Dr. Nute did, but there are plenty of other engaging activities available to retirees.

Descriptive Intro

Its left ear is partially detached. One of its black plastic eyes is gone. Parts of its fur is worn and matted from being hugged and tugged around the house. Food and juice stains dapple its tan coat in places. Some people might think this little stuffed bunny should be thrown into the junk heap. But this old bunny is one of my favorite childhood possessions, and we've been through a lot together.

Page 27: Conclusion Paragraphs

Descriptive conclusion

Even though people might think I’m being crazy for being so attached to an old toy, I can’t imagine what I’d do without Mr. Softie. Every torn stitch, every missing piece, every worn spot brings back a childhood memory I will cherish forever.

Shocking Statement Intro

If you became seriously ill and needed to be hospitalized for several weeks, would you be able to afford to pay thousands of dollars for proper medical care? Unfortunately, many Americans have already found out that they cannot. Therefore, the federal government must provide national health insurance for all of its citizens.

Page 29: Conclusion Paragraphs

conclusion

As the population continues to age, the demand for medical care will only increase. Without the support of the federal government to supply health insurance for its citizens, many people will suffer and die needlessly. Can we let this happen to the people in this country?
