Just These Lines, My Friends…

Just Do It!... Those are three powerful words used to advertise athletic shoes. The idea is that by putting on a pair of Nikes you will be inspired to do what you have always dreamed of doing. Instead of sitting around or becoming a “couch potato,” when you put on these shoes you will be motivated to get up and get active. Maybe your activity is walking—Nike has a shoe for that. They also have shoes for running or mountain biking, for rock climbing or cross training, for baseball or football. Before Nike ever used this advertising slogan, Christians were called to live out this very same idea. The bible encourages us to Just Do It because we too have put something on. Scripture says in Galatians 3:27, For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. In other words you are to be more than a “Christian Couch Potato.” There is no sitting around when it comes to God’s kingdom work. The Bible says that more than our feet are covered. Rather, our entire body from head to toe is covered in Christ Jesus. That means our Heavenly Father already sees us differently, and the world is now to see us differently too. So here are some Just Do It activities for you to consider this summer. -Instead of wanting to get around to Bible reading and a life of prayer… Just Do It. -Instead of talking about attending the 6:30 p.m. Wednesday Evening Worship because you will have to miss Sunday… Just Do It. -Instead of saying that you should take a trip to the Mountains or Beach to enjoy God’s creation… Just Do It.

Page 3: Concordia Newsletter12).pdf · Concordia Newsletter July 2015 Christ shaping us into community here… Empowering us to impact community there. Rev. A. Mark Schudde Rev. Brian S

-Instead of waiting for a perfect opportunity to meet your neighbor(s) or to have a block party (iNeighborhood)…… Just Do It. -Instead of wanting to be invited to by someone to join an activity that impacts the community, realize that God has gifted you for something special and… Just Do It. -Instead of waiting for fall to invite a friend to Sunday worship or to a church event… Just Do It. When Clark Kent dressed in his business suit, he was just Clark Kent. But when he entered the phone booth and was clothed in the outfit that he had been entrusted, and did what he had been called to do. He became Superman. Remember again these words from Galatians, For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. You have been clothed in Christ. You have been entrusted with God’s Spirit. You have been called by God, so now … Just Do It. Pastor Schudde

Other news:

Has your family been serving in our community? We want to hear about it! Not so you can brag, but so we can encourage and build you up with all the families of Concordia. Send your stories to Pastor Weaver via email or Facebook.

Family Legacy words of the month:

Fidelity- faithfulness, loyalty. Occurs only once in New Testament- Titus 2:10.

Justification- Jesus’ death on the cross, on our behalf, made it “Just-as-if-I-

hadn’t-sinned”. Jesus paid the price for our sins by dying on the cross.

Transgression- the violation of a law, command, or duty. Old Testament

Hebrew meant to revolt or rebel. New Testament Greek meant a deliberate

breach of the law.

Supplies needed for Faith-in-the-Home Workshop: drop in box @ worship entrance (by July 19) -travel sized toiletries (shampoo, body soap, toothpaste, toothbrush) -plain white socks (all sizes) -plain or colored note pads (5x7 or smaller)

Beginning September 20th, as a congregation, our life of worship and Bible study, will be focused on The Story. This is a 31-week, chronological walk through the Old and New Testament, combining Scripture passages and events of God’s people, in a way that puts the historical narrative all together. Every week we will come together in worship, focused on a new chapter and period of time in the life of God’s people. Our time in Bible study, whether large group or small group, will be focused on that week’s chapter. The Story is a wonderful opportunity to read through the narrative of the Bible in a way you may have never done before, to gain a rich and deep understanding of how God has worked in the midst of His Creation, and continues to do so even today! Be sure to pay attention- more information is coming in the weeks ahead!

Thank you to all the VBS volunteers! We had a wonderful week in Nazareth, Jesus’ hometown. We enjoyed visiting Mary’s house everyday to hear what it was like when Jesus was growing up. We also tasted lots of new foods that Jesus would have eaten. We had a blast at fun and games. It was really hot, but we still played. The Marketplace was a new adventure for everyone. We got to visit each shop and make something new everyday. All the shopkeepers didn’t know about Jesus so we shared our faith with them. We even had a camel visit us on the last night. During VBS, we raised money for India Transformed. We raised $900 to go towards sponsoring children in India!

VBS was awesome because of our awesome planning team, shopkeepers, Mary’s house coordinators, and our kitchen crew! Thank you!

Concordia Christian Day School

A Tradition of Excellence in a Changing World

CONCORDIA STUDENTS EXCEL

Concordia’s 2015 Stanford Achievement Tests were outstanding. Reading Comprehension improved to the 82%ile, Total Math is at the 84%ile, Science improved to the 86%ile and Social Science is at the 83%ile. Thinking Skills that tests critical thinking skills improved to the 87%ile. This means that Concordia students scored better than 87% of the students in the nation in their grade level. The third grade had the greatest improvement from last year as their average percentile went from the 75%ile to the 82%ile. Fifth grade had the highest average percentile at the 85%ile. Fourth grade was at the 81%ile and eighth grade was at the 80%ile. Please remember that our Achievement Testing is also just one way we evaluate our educational program. This year 100% of our Algebra I/Math I students passed the North Carolina EOC exam with 8 of the 10 scoring a level 5 and the entire class having a 95%ile average. That is an unbelievable statistic. We had 3 Concordia graduates honored as a high school valedictorian. Kathryn Hass was the Valedictorian at UCHS while Nick Reitzel was honored as the Salutatorian at UCHS. Brittany Connor was the Salutatorian of Newton-Conover High School. In the past 9 years we have had 13 high school Valedictorians or Salutatorians. Many other Concordia’s graduates are again in the top 10% of their high school classes. We pray that God will continue to bless us as we seek to educate children for Him.

AWARDS The highest award that we present each year is the Gilbert Pingel Award. This award is given to the eighth grader who best exemplifies the Christian spirit of Love. The recipient must be honest, a model to underclass students, willing to help in many circumstances, and proud to be a child of God. This year’s award was given to Haven Bailey. Concordia has recently had three groups of students qualify for National Competitions. The Quiz Bowl Team and the Wreath Design Team from the Concordia Jr. Beta Club placed in the North Carolina Jr. Beta Club competitions and are now eligible to move on to the National Jr. Beta Club Convention. This national competition will be held in Nashville TN.

Will DeHart, Haven Bailey and Jennifer Wolfe qualified and attended the National History Bee in Louisville, KY. They were competing against 3500 middle school students on topics in history. Will DeHart placed 209th, which means he placed higher than 94% of the competition. Jennifer Wolfe and Haven Bailey scored better than 88% of the contestants. Will DeHart did so well he qualified for the International History Bee this summer.

Teacher Update Concordia Christian Day School has projected enrollment and income that is significantly below our budgeted amount for the calendar year 2015. The Day School Board has prayed and examined the best possible way to reduce our salary expenses by over $65,000 for the rest of 2015. The School Board is determined to continue to provide excellent instruction to all our students, maintain support for our teachers with teacher assistants and adequate instructional materials, and not cut any programs. We wanted to meet our needs by more efficiently staffing the school. Some of the budget reduction is done by not hiring personnel that we budgeted and need such as a part-time office position and a PE/Athletic Director position. We will continue to meet these needs in other ways. We needed to eliminate a full-time elementary teacher position and replace it with a part-time teacher to balance our budget. It was not something that we wanted to do, but found it necessary to do.

Page 25: Concordia Newsletter12).pdf · Concordia Newsletter July 2015 Christ shaping us into community here… Empowering us to impact community there. Rev. A. Mark Schudde Rev. Brian S

Dawn Leary served as our second grade teacher for one year and we regret that the financial situation will not allow her to return. She is an outstanding classroom teacher. May God’s blessings be with her as she seeks to serve God in another location.

Magda Reid is leaving to fulfill her dream of teaching high school Spanish. She has been our Spanish teacher for 11 years and has been instrumental in building our Spanish program. Her middle school students have competed and been successful competing against high school students in foreign language competitions. She is known throughout the community as an outstanding Spanish teacher. We pray that God will bless Mrs. Reid as she uses her talents in teaching high school students.

There is also a change in our Before School/After School program. Melissa Averett, who has served as our Before/After School Director for 3 years will be leaving along with Arlene Longstreet. May God go with both of them as they explore new opportunities in their lives.

ANNUAL ASSOCIATION MEETING REPORT

The Annual Meeting of the UCHS Association was held on Thursday, June 18. Principal Willard presented his “state of the school” address providing highlights

from the 2014-15 school year. Among the accomplishments noted were the students’ outstanding test scores as compared to local, state, and national averages;

an increase in the average number of college credit hours earned by students; and the $1.3 million of scholarship monies offered this years seniors. Board Director

Conrad Yount was re-elected; and newcomers, Rick Bare and Meaghan Texer, were elected to join the Board.

NEW STAFF POSITIONS ANNOUNCED UCHS is pleased to announce the addition of two new staff positions for the 2015-2016 school year. First, we welcome Jeff Taylor as our Dean of Students. Jeff recently retired as principal at St. Stephen’s High School. He will be teaching Civics

and serving as our Athletic Director as well as handling school discipline. The second addition is Paige Hamblin as College Counselor and English teacher. Ms.

Hamblin will be working closely with students to ensure that they are prepared for the college application process as well as on the right path for acceptance to their

preferred colleges.

OPENINGS IN ALL GRADES STILL AVAILABLE UCHS is still accepting applications for students in 9th grade. UCHS provides

outstanding academic opportunities such as AP and dual-credit courses in a Christian environment. Students have the advantages of a small school while

enjoying all the facilities, diversity, and activities of a college campus. Qualifying students can graduate with up to 30 college credits—all at the price of a high school

education.

For more news about UCHS or information about applying, check out our website at www.uchigh.com or call us at 828-855-2995.

HELP WANTED!

UCHS has two open positions at this time. A full-time Math Teacher is needed

to teach Geometry, Discrete Math, and Pre-Calculus. A teaching license is required for this position. A part-time Science Teacher is needed to teach Chemistry and

Environmental Science. Call the school office or check our website (www.uchigh.com) for an application.

Youth Ministry INFO for July 2015

The Henze Family at Disney World

Greetings. Let me introduce myself….I am Chris Henze. I have been “Called”

to serve as the Youth Minister at Concordia Lutheran Church. With so many

changes taking place at church I figured some basic biographical information

would be helpful.

My wife Stephanie and I have been married for 20 years (the picture above is

from our 20th Anniversary Celebration with our children).

We have 5 children going into the following grades: Bethany-12th grade,

Andy-11th grade, Caleb-9th grade, Jamie-7th grade, and Jordan-5th grade.

I graduated from Concordia University in Irvine, California in 1998 with a

Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Religious Studies with a Christian Education

Leadership Emphasis. I am Director of Christian Education (DCE) certified

with a Specialization in Youth and Family Ministries. I have served Lutheran

Congregations in Tennessee, California, Arkansas and North Carolina. I have

been at Concordia Lutheran Church for 8.5 years.

I survived a life-threatening 50’ fall at The Super Dome at The 2010 National

Youth Gathering. By the grace of God I am still alive and able to serve in His

Kingdom. I enjoy working with youth during the teenage years of life.

With my job, I am blessed to help youth at Concordia and our

community. If I can be of any service, then please call.

Jesus Loves You! I Love You!

Thanks to our Youth for Serving @ VBS 2015
