Dear Parents, REDDAM HOUSE CONCOURS D’ARTS 2021 Herewith important information regarding the eisteddfod:

1. DATES:

The eisteddfod will be held from Monday, 2 August to Tuesday, 31 August 2021.

2. CLOSING DATES FOR ENTRIES: Entries are to be made online. THE ONLINE ENTRY PORTAL CLOSES AT 24H00 ON 9 JULY 2021!

3. ASPECTS TO CONSIDER WITH ENTRIES:

Entry fees: R 100 per person per item. Entrance fees are not refundable A penalty fee of R 50 for a date change will be charged for each date that is changed. Reprinting of certificates will be charged at a fee of R20 per certificate reprinted. Please note that due to COVID-19: The top 4 results per student will go towards the end of year

cultural points for students at Reddam Bedfordview. Please contact your Head of Head of Arts & Culture or relevant person at your school to find out how many items will be recognised by your school for cultural points for Colours Awards.

4. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING

Please note that ONLY individual performances/works can be entered in Concours D’Arts 2021. All performances MUST be submitted online by the due date provided on your registration form. All unprepared & improvisation items of all genres as well as all duets, trios and groups of all

disciplines will unfortunately not be available for entry in Concours D’Arts 2021. The Gala evening will be held on 5 October, in a virtual format.

Note: only one entry per item number is allowed per participant. That is, each participant may enter DR1 & DR6 (for example) but NOT DR1 twice.

Reddam House Concours D’Arts

OBJECTIVES

To promote a basic awareness of Arts and Culture as a learning area based on the entertainment value. To create opportunities for every single pupil to participate and develop the various art disciplines. To showcase talented learners.

GENERAL RULES AND GUIDELINES

A. Entries

A separate entry form should be completed for each individual participant.

Please adhere to copyright.

Own Choice: Copy of text to be handed to the convener.

Entry fees are not refundable.

The correct amount must be paid for all entries. No entries will be processed if the entry fees

are outstanding.

Participants are limited to one entry per item.

Individual Entries: due to the uncertainty of these unprecedented times and that we may still be

experiencing varying levels of lockdown for a while to come, we have decided to keep Concours

D’Arts Digital! This means that all performances for all genres and items will now be submitted

as a media file (image or audio/video in MP4 format). The date that the video needs to be

submitted by will be the scheduled date for the item you registered for. Instead of performing on

the date, you will upload your media file to the Concours web portal. The schedule of dates for

each item will be emailed to you after your registration. Diarise these dates as they represent the

deadline for when the video needs to be uploaded. To upload your video performance, you will

log into the Concours web portal (same as the link above). Once logged in, you will be able to view

the list of items you have registered for. Then you will click on the upload link and browse for the

media file to upload. Once the file has been uploaded successfully you will then be prompted to

submit for marking.

Duet, Trio and Group Entries: these will not be available again this year.

Visual Art, Prose Creative Writing and Prepared Poetry Writing entries: these items are to be

photographed and submitted as hi-res images (ideally png or jpeg format less than 10Mb in size)

by no later than 24h00 on 19 August 2021. These images should also be uploaded through the

Concours web portal.

Queries with online entry submissions: All queries regarding problems with the online portal

must be directed to [email protected] with [email protected] copied on the

email.

The closing date for entries is 9 July 2021 with NO EXCEPTIONS.

B. Participants and Parents

Participants must respect timetables and be punctual.

Participants must stay within the maximum time allocated per item.

All learners should perform in school uniform with the exception of those items that specify

neutral clothing (black) or costume.

Any complaints must be addressed to the organizer within 24 hours, accompanied by a R300

non-refundable fee.

C. Granting of Awards

Each participant will be adjudicated on what he/she is capable of doing and not according to

what is assumed that other learners of his/her age can do.

Awards shall be made as follows: -

Diploma: 90-100%

Awarded for an outstanding performance that displays originality. The skills level, knowledge and understanding relevant to the performance is exceptionally high.

Gold: 80-89% Awarded for good and sound performance that displays a high level of skills, knowledge and understanding.

Silver: 70 – 79% Awarded for a fair performance. The basic skills, knowledge and understanding are present; the candidate still has to work on one or more of these aspects.

Bronze: Less than 70%

The candidate has a basic awareness of some of the requirements relevant to this genre and should be motivated to start preparing well in advance.

Item Winner

An item winner is a candidate who obtains the highest mark in a specific item (minimum 80%). This will only be awarded if there are more than three entries in the specific item. Item winners will receive a special certificate at the Gala evening.

Section Winners

Grade R-3: A candidate must render at least three items and obtain at least 85% for each item. The average of the candidate’s three highest marks will be calculated.

Grade 4-7: A candidate must render at least four items and obtain at least 85% for each item. The average of the candidate’s four highest marks will be calculated.



Trophy Awards

The following awards will only be made if there are at least 5 participants in each category

and the best performance must be of a diploma level.

General Rules:

Time limits

Participants must adhere to the time limits that are provided for each particular item. The adjudicator may

disqualify a performance should a performance exceed the allocated time limit.

Video Submissions All performances for all genres and items must be submitted as a media file (audio/video in MP4 format). The date that the video must be submitted by will be the scheduled date for the item you registered for. Instead of performing on the date, you will upload your media file to the Concours web portal. Performances are meant to be filmed specifically for Concours D’Arts. Pre-recorded videos of performances for

other events may not be submitted and will be disqualified. We would like for there to be parity for all participants. It needs to be a live stand-alone, landscape camera shot with no editing – so essentially a live recording. No edited videos will be accepted, and edited videos will be disqualified. You may film in a studio or a stage if you have one available. If your country is in lockdown find a spot that would be most suitable for your performance, a garage, the lawn in your garden, a patio or somewhere equally suitable and just do your best. The adjudicators are aware of the limitations of not being in a studio or on a stage.

Entries

Participants are allowed to enter different items within a particular category, e.g., puppetry, prescribed poem

and prose creative writing. However, participants may not enter multiple entries in the same item.

Own Choice

If a participant is entering for an ‘Own Choice’ item, a copy of the text must be supplied to the adjudicator.

Appropriateness

Since this is a school event, swearing is not permissible and the participant needs to be aware of the

appropriateness of the piece being performed.

Een karakter speel teenoor dankbeeldige ander karakter/s en kan humoristies of dramaties van aard

wees. Een karakter word deurgaans uitgebeeld. Die stuk moet verkieslik uit ‘n toneelstuk kom, maar

‘n geskikte prosastuk mag verwerk word.

op kreatiwiteit en verbeelding. Geen notas mag gebruik word nie.

8. Voorbereide lees

Twee boeke word gebruik. Deelnemers sit in ‘n ry voor in die saal. Gedeeltes word vooraf afgemerk.

Wanneer eerste leerder optree kry die volgende leerder geleentheid om sy stukkie te lees.

Beoordelaars moet beoordeling voltooi hê wanneer leerders afstap van die verhoog.

9. Openbare redevoering (Voorbereid)

Voorbereid (Eie Keuse).

Dit is 'n oorredingstoespraak. Die hoofdoel is om die gehoor te beïnvloed, nie 'n praatjie of 'n lesing

nie.

Backing Tracks NO backing tracks are allowed, and NO electronic instruments are allowed. However, due to COVID-19, a piano accompaniment as a backtrack will be allowed for classical entries.




Repetitions Repetitions in all works are to be avoided except in the event of Da Capo. Moreover, in strophic songs, only two verses must be prepared. Should a participant sing three verses they may be disqualified.

Grading Entries are categorised according to school grades and have no association with music grades offered by the different international musical bodies such as Trinity or Royal Schools etc.

Classical Style For the purposes of the Concours D’Arts classical style implies any music composed from the following periods:

Renaissance (1450 – 1600) and earlier e.g., Palestrina, Lassus, Byrd etc. Baroque & earlier (1600 – 1750) e.g., Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti etc. Classical (1750 – 1810) e.g., Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini etc. Romantic (1810 – 1900) e.g., Schubert, Schumann, Verdi etc. 20th Century (1900 – 1999) e.g., Ravel, Orff, Williams etc. 21st Century (2000 – present) e.g., Glass etc. Traditional/Folk Music

These time periods are delineated on the basis of musical style rather than as a chronological allocation of

dates.

In order to circumvent infringement on copyright, original backing tracks may not be used, that is, singing with the artist, and the participant will be disqualified. Own Composition

If an own composition is to be performed a notated copy of the music must be supplied to the adjudicator on the day. If a copy is not supplied the participant will be disqualified. Participants may not plagiarise in any way. Copying music or text from anywhere including all social media sites and/or the internet is not permissible. It must be the entrant's own original work and concept, or it will be disqualified. Entrants may also not accept help from anybody in the creating of their works. General Rules: Copies A copy of the music must be supplied to the adjudicator on the day. If a copy is not supplied the participant

will be disqualified.

Instruments

Participants may perform with a recorded version of the accompaniment, a back track or with accompaniment.




Repetitions Repetitions in all works are to be avoided except in the event of Da Capo. Moreover, in strophic songs, only two verses must be prepared. Should a participant sing three verses they may be asked to stop by the adjudicator.


Grading

Entries are categorised according to school grades and have no association with music grades offered by

the different international musical bodies such as Trinity or Royal Schools.

Backing Tracks

In order to circumvent infringement on copyright, original backing tracks may not be used, that is, singing

with the artist, and the participant will be disqualified.

Own Composition If an own composition is to be performed a notated copy of the music must be supplied to the adjudicator on the day. If a copy is not supplied the participant will be disqualified. Participants may not plagiarise in any way. Copying music or text from anywhere including all social media sites and/or the internet is not permissible. It must be the entrant's own original work and concept, or it will be disqualified. Entrants may also not accept help from anybody in the creating of their works. Each work will have to be submitted with a signed Honour Pledge seen below.

Dance Section General Rules:


Video Submissions All performances for all genres and items will now be submitted as a media file (audio/video in MP4 format). The date that the video must be submitted by will be the scheduled date for the item you registered for. Instead of performing on the date, you will upload your media file to the Concours web portal. The schedule of dates for each item will be emailed to you after your registration. Diarise these dates as they represent the deadline for when the video needs to be uploaded. To upload your video performance, you will log into the Concours web portal https://online.myrhythm.io/Events/Concours. Once logged in, you will be able to view the list of items you have registered for. Then you will click on the upload link and browse for the media file to upload. Once the file has been uploaded successfully you will then be prompted to submit for marking. Ballroom and Latin Dances

Ballroom and Latin dances are to be presented by couples (male & female). The ‘style’ of each entry needs to

be stipulated on the entry form.

Classical Ballet

Classical ballet technique: A classical dance depicting classical ballet steps, simply reflecting the music.

Pointe work is expected but not compulsory from students 13 years and older providing the stage floor is

suitable. Classical Ballet - Demi-character: A story/tale/emotion is depicted during a classical ballet routine.

Props may be used for this section.

Contemporary Dance

Contemporary dance is a modern classical form of dance with more freedom of movement. A ‘literal’ (to

communicate a story or message to the audience) or ‘nonliteral’/ ‘straight’ (communicates directly to the

audience without explanations – experimenting with movement rather than telling a story) theme may be

used. (Martha Graham style).

Hip-Hop/Funk/Break Dance Hip-hop can include break dance, electric boogie, jamming and hype dance etc. Correct costuming /attire for this section is encouraged.

Jazz – Straight Jazz is a modern dance, containing strong jazz technique that should also be danced to appropriate jazz music. It can be theatrical or rhythmical, exuberant with a sharp, funky style. Jazz also includes various styles since the 1900’s, including Ragtime Blues, New Orleans style Dixieland), swing, bebop, cool jazz, fusion, jazz rock etc. Participants will be adjudicated on their understanding of the principles underlying this technique.

Jazz – Character This is a storyline, theme or character portrayed through Jazz dance.

Modern (Straight) A dance depicting modern dance steps, simply reflecting the music.

Modern (Character Solo) A dance depicting modern dance steps with a storyline, theme or character.

Musical Theatre: Song & Dance This category involves a dance performance, including live vocals and/or backing tracks. The dancing, choreography and vocals should complement each other and definitely represent a theme. (Pieces from musicals such as Annie, Cats, Fame, and Footloose etc. are good examples of the nature of such a performance). The dance style is free but must be characteristic of the music selection (most likely styles to be presented in this item would include tap, jazz or modern dance). Microphones (preferably hands free) can be used for children who have not yet learned to project their voices in the theatre environment.

Class Dances (Ballet or Modern) Rules for solo dances apply. A dance set by a teacher/choreographer with specific steps to be danced in specific order. Participants of the same grade perform the exact same dance.

Tap (Straight) All forms of tap are permissible. Primary emphasis is on footwork, with correct technique and style with musical interpretation and demonstration. Music/recordings with pre-recorded taps will be disqualified!)

Tap (Character) Correct technique and style with musical interpretation and demonstration of a storyline, theme or character.

Traditional / Folk Dance Traditional / folk dancing may be depicted from any nationality or country and it must be typical of that nation’s dance. Costume should be appropriate and traditional steps must be replicated accurately, e.g., African, Indian, Spanish, Greek etc. These entries may be presented with live accompaniment/instrumentation if needed.

Any Other Dance To include Worship in Dance, Free Movement and Acrobatic Dance as well as any dance form not specified anywhere else. This may be presented as a solo, duet, trio, quartet or group. For Free Movement dances, movements not limited to a specified style but the correct technique to be shown of various styles. Acrobatic Dance Acrobatic dance is a dance containing technical acrobatic elements which should be performed to the highest technical standard possible.

Any media or combination of media may be used.

Image Submissions These items are to be photographed and submitted as hi-res images (ideally png or jpeg format less than 10Mb in size) by no later than 24h00 on 19 August 2021. These images should also be uploaded through the Concours web portal. For practical reasons it is required that:

All primary school entries must be no smaller than A4 and no larger than A3.

There are no restrictions to secondary school entries.

All entries should be neatly presented.

The judge’s decision is final.

Participants may not plagiarise in any way. Copying imagery and or text from anywhere

including all social media sites and/or the internet is not permissible. It must be the entrant's

own original artwork and concept, or it will be disqualified. Entrants may also not accept help

from anybody in the creating of their artworks. Each work will have to be submitted with a

Once on Open Day, He put it out on the display table, But we weren’t allowed to open the box Because it’s allergic to light.

Our teacher says his pet’s unique. “Isn’t it lonely?” we asked. “Not with you lot around,” he said.

Once, there was an awful commotion When it escaped While he was opening the box To check if it was all right. But he managed to catch it Before it got off his desk.

It looked like a good idea on the picture But nowhere in the ad. did it say What trouble it would bring. The words above the drawing told me That I’d never have to work again. This was very misleading. True enough, I haven’t worked since I got it, But I thought it meant instant prosperity. The side effects are definitely undesirable, i.e. insomnia, tedium, etc. I took it on holiday And it completely spoiled my time on the beach. I was not able to do anything As my mind would not concentrate on making decisions. So, for the above reasons, I would like to cancel my order For “Unlimited BOREDOM”. SPRINGMIELIES Ons gooi die mielies in die pot en sit die deksel op. Ons draai die plaat op hoogste graad en luister vir die eerste skop. Hoor jy die mieliepitte spring en teen die deksel klap? Nes hael wat op die sinkdak val: Klakke-latte! Klakke lap! Ons haal die deksel suutjies af…. Dalk maak dit nog amok! Da a r le die pitte oopgebars, spierwit, net soos kapok. “MENEER SE SLIMSTE KIND”

Die skooldag begin met gebed en gesang en in die Bybelles hoor ons van “die slang”. Wiskunde is vir my geen probleem en spelling vorm deel van my sisteem. Pouse verkies hul soos een man my tot kaptein van die rugbyspan. Met geskied is gaan dit voor die wind; ek is “Meneer se slimste kind”. In Engels is ek beter as die res; selfs Sotho verloop sonder moles. Die skooldag eindig met ‘n halfuur se sang en net daar word die bordjies verhang. My stem is soos die van ‘n kraai; ek voel hoe die irritasie in my laai. Van pure frustrasie begin ek Juffrou verpes. Ek’s ‘n groot steuring vir die les. Die hoof se lat praat hard en seer. “Juffrou, ek belowe, ek sal nie weer – Volgende keer sing ek, niemand sal my keer…. Al klink dit dan soos…soos…donderweer!”

TRAPSUUTJIES Trapsuutjies wik en wieg, wik en wieg voor hy sy voet versit. Sy lyfie rek en strek, rek en strek na waar ‘n vliegie sit. Hy vorder voet vir voet, voet vir voet, versit van stam na tak, verkleur van geel na groen, groen na geel, ‘n meester van sy vak. Die vliegie draal en droom, draal en droom en maak sy vlerkies skoon, Trapsuutjies mik en meet, mik en meet, steeds langsaam, doodgewoon. Van Somersetstrand tot Rondebosch het al wat leef sy werk gelos. Oor Tafelberg breek my wolk in twee en ek duik doemeloem in die see. ‘n Visserskuit het my opgelaai En teruggevat na Gordonsbaai. Telefoon, radio en koerante versprei my storie na alle kante. Maar Pa het my aan die nek gevat en uitgelooi met ‘n kweperlat. “Verstaan,” sê hy, “’n mansmenskind laat hom nie rondsmyt deur die wind. “Nog minder loop hy rond en spog met radio- en koerantebog.”

JA-NEE Al vertel sy graag hoe sy hom haat, moet jy dit nooit ooit glo nie. Ons almal weet maar alte goed dis geheel en al nie so nie. As die seuns haar voorkeer en haar terg: “Jy’s mal oor hom, ne ?” ruk sy haar op kastig vererg. Maar vir haar maats Sal sy haar geheim vertel En as hu lle eers weet, Weet elke pel! “Hou tog my geheim,” smeek sy. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

1. How many items can I enter?

You can enter as many items as you like.

2. How many items should I enter?

It is recommended that you enter for four different items (as Colour’s criteria may be revised by your school

to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic). Also, four entries will make you eligible to be a Section Winner

if your points are high enough.

3. Can I enter the same item with the same code twice?

No, you may ONLY enter a particular item ONCE. You may not enter twice for the same item with the same

item code.

4. Is this eisteddfod for College students only?

No, the eisteddfod is open to all students from grade R to matric.

5. How many items will be recognised by my school for cultural points for Colours Awards?

You should contact your Head of Arts & Culture or relevant person at your school to find out how many items will be recognised by your school for cultural points for Colours Awards.

6. Will a teacher at my school be co-ordinating the online entries?

No, each student must register online individually with the help of their parents if necessary.

7. Can parents register students directly in order to pay?

Yes, parents are to register and pay directly for a participant entry.

8. Will a teacher oversee the uploading of videos etc.?

No, the student (with the help of a parent if necessary) must upload their videos directly to site on the due date or the parent could upload it. A teacher at your school will not co-ordinate the uploading of videos.

9. Could the entry fee be billed to the students' school accounts and an EFT made from that school to

Concours D’Arts?

No, each student must pay online directly to Concours D’Arts before their entry can be processed.

10. Are the performances expected to be recorded whilst in lockdown or are we able to submit work videoed before lockdown? For example, we had a show before lockdown and have footage of this, is this able to be entered?

No, performances are meant to be filmed specifically for Concours D’Arts. Pre-recorded videos of performances may not be submitted and will be disqualified. We would like for there to be parity for all participants.

11. Does the video of a performance need to be shot as a stand-alone camera shot or can an edited video

be submitted?

Yes, it needs to be a live stand-alone, landscape camera shot with no editing – so essentially a live recording. No edited videos will be accepted, and edited videos will be disqualified.

12. Can a performance be any length?

No, there are very specific durations provided in the prospectus, which can be found on the home page of the Concours D’Arts website, for every performance. These need to be strictly adhered to. Should a performance exceed this prescribed time limit, the performance will be disqualified.

13. Can a visual artwork, like a sculpture, be any size?

No, even though submissions are going to be virtual, the sizes specified in the Visual Art Section of the

prospectus which can be found on the home page of the Concours D’Arts website must be adhered to.

Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

14. If some students want to perform a studio set eisteddfod dance which was supposed to be performed

at another eisteddfod, but which has now been cancelled, would it be permitted for the six students to

perform the same dance but enter the dance individually and separately?

Yes, it would be totally fine for the six students to individually enter the same dance.

15. Please can you clarify the rules regarding dance videos. If it turns out that we are still in lock down and

these dances need to be done at home, are there any guidelines regarding this? Obviously, nobody has

a large clear space to use. So, will there be any restrictions, can we use a garden, patio etc. Also, a

backdrop and sound will be tricky.

Do not worry about backdrops, lighting etc. All dancers are in the same predicament. Find a spot that would be most suitable for your performance, a garage, the lawn in your garden, a patio or somewhere equally suitable and just do your best. The adjudicators are dancers too and are aware of the limitations of not being in a studio or on a stage.

16. If I am going to do a ballet pointe solo, it will be limited/restricted by me being at home. What shall I do?

Do it on the lawn without pointe shoes and find the most suitable alternative to replicate the dance without creating any possible risk for injury, or if your country is not on lockdown you can film in a studio or on a stage if you have one available.

17. Can an artwork be a copy of someone else’s work?

No, participants may not plagiarise in any way. Copying imagery from anywhere including all social media

sites and/or the internet is not permissible. It must be the entrant's own original artwork and concept, or

it will be disqualified. Entrants may also not accept help from anybody in the creating of their artworks.

Participants will be required to sign a Pledge of Honour indicating that they have read and understood the

above conditions and have complied with these conditions.

18. Due to lockdown, I have been sending piano accompaniments to my students and they have been singing to these during their lessons. I realize backing tracks are strictly not allowed for the eisteddfod, but due to my not being able to accompany them at the piano (lagging online) would they be allowed the piano accompaniment as a backtrack this time for the eisteddfod.

Yes, they will be allowed to have a piano accompaniment as a backtrack for the eisteddfod.

19. Would you kindly advise if there are specific books for the prepared reading or do, we choose our own book?

The participant chooses their own text for these items.

20. Is there more detail as to the guidelines and requirements etc. for Product Design for Fashion/Costume Design. I assume there is some type of scope.

Fashion/Costume Design is totally open-ended. The participant can choose whatever they would like to do. It is the idea behind the design that is the most important.

21. How do I upload my video online?

23. What are some entry guidelines?

Due these very unusual times, and with participants from all over the world from different countries all at different stages of lockdown, we have decided that in order to make the competition as fair as possible we have made the following prescriptions with regard to video submissions:

Performances should be recorded as ‘live’ performances for this event, and must be performed in school uniforms, except dance and where otherwise indicated in the prospectus, for example, dramatic monologues etc.

Participants may not submit pre-recorded performances from prior events, exams, concerts or rehearsals and the performance should be unique and specific to Concours D’Arts.

All submissions need to be one continuous take, from beginning to end. No cuts, editing, filters, underscoring, postproduction or effects may be added.

Non-compliance with these stipulations will result in disqualification.

For Dance and Music, accompaniment/ backtracks specified in the prospectus are allowed.

24. Does the introduction count as part of the specified recording time for the item?

No, the introduction does not count as part of the specified recording time.

25. What information must the introduction include?

Please begin your recording by introducing yourself with:

- Your Name & Surname

- Your Country

- Your School

- Your Grade

- And which category your submission is for (as per the Prospectus)

26. How do I record my video performance?

All submissions need to be recorded in LANDSCAPE format, please.

All performances for all genres and items must be submitted as a media file (audio/video in MP4 format), except for some Visual Art items. The date that the video must be submitted by will be the scheduled date for the item you registered for. Instead of performing on the date, you will upload your media file to the Concours web portal. The schedule of dates for each item will be emailed to you after your registration. Diarise these dates as they represent the deadline for when the video needs to be uploaded.
