INTRODUCTION

To say there has been an explosion in decorative concrete is quite the understatement! Homeowners arehiring decorative concrete specialists to color, stain, score, stamp, overlay, or otherwise decorate the pooldecks, entries, driveways, and walkways around their homes.

AMCON, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, is seeing a large increase in pool-related projects. “Manyhomeowners not only want a pool, but a total package - a back yard retreat in which they can escape andrelax at the end of the day and on weekends.”

Adds Mike Boeddeker of Pristine Concrete in Paso Robles, California, “Today people want their ownprivate vacation spot, somewhere they can retreat to every day.” Homeowners often want an extension oftheir house; they want an exterior surface that flows with the indoor flooring materials they have used.

Using decorative concrete as part of a homes overall design is also happening in the Staples, Minnesotaarea. “We have been doing large decorative driveways, 2,000 to 5,000 square feet, lakeside patios and wraparound porches. This is in keeping with the rustic and log homes found in the lake areas,” according to MikeVerlennich of Verlennich Masonry and Concrete.

Decorative contractors can also spruce up existing concrete. Concrete Art, located in Carlsbad, California, turns boring gray concrete into surfaces with innovative designs and vibrant colors. “We enhance existingsurfaces so homeowners don’t have to go through the arduous process of replacing concrete,” says companypresident Jeffrey Grieve.

Bill Guthro of Distinctive Concrete also points out that stamped concrete, for instance, is also very costeffective. “Stamped concrete is usually about one-third less than the price of installing natural materials,”according to Guthro.

Ok. Enough with the dialog! Please browse this catalog for decorative concrete ideas - then call thecontractor near you to get started creating your own vacation retreat right at home.

Sincerely,

Jim PetersonPresidentThe Concrete Network

The scoring element of Concrete Artis accomplished with diamond bladesand with other tools that hedeveloped. The coloring process isalso unique, because it is not a paintor coating product, but a concrete

staining system that is effective, permanent, and economical.

“We are seeing more and morehomeowners interested in dressing uptheir outdoor living spaces,” saidGrieve. “With a large amount ofrefinancing occurring in SouthernCalifornia, due to low interest ratesand soaring values in real estate, people are spending money enhancingtheir homes, not only as an investmentvehicle, but to make living in themmore pleasurable.”

Today people want their own privatevacation spot, somewhere they canretreat to every day. Those in the SanLuis Obispo area turn to PristineConcrete to create their own privateoutdoor living environments thathave a resort feel.

Pristine Concrete is based in PasoRobles, which is in San Luis ObispoCounty, halfway between SanFrancisco and Los Angeles. OwnerMike Boeddeker offers an array ofservices, including colored concrete, countertops, driveways, engraving, staining, pool decks, stamping, andwater projects.

“Most of our work is stampedconcrete, driveways, patios, but welike to add some rock work orstamped walls to add somedimension to a project,” saidBoeddeker. “Decorative concrete isgrowing big time.”

Boeddeker colors the surface with acolor hardener then imprints theconcrete with the pattern you chose, like brick, cobble, or stone. He thencleans and seals the project.

He also stains existing concrete bytaking your concrete foundation, driveway or patio and saw-cuttingdesigns then staining with an acidstain or a modified-latex stain. It isthen sealed with a gloss sealer.

Boeddeker said residents in San LuisObispo, Paso Robles and NorthernSanta Maria County are clamoringfor home improvement projectsconducive to outdoor living.

“They almost always want anextension of their house,” he said.“They want something that flowswith the indoor flooring, and hasshade as well as sun.”

Boeddeker said he is receiving a lotof requests for outdoor kitchens withbarbecues, sinks, burners, warmers, refrigerators, even storage areas.

“Lighting is big also,” he said.“Homeowners want lighting thatreflects their mood for parties, romance, family or just a greatbackdrop on those cold, rainy nights… They want a vacation spot theycan go to every day.”

And part of that vacation package isthe decorative concrete that gracesthe patio, walkway and courtyardareas.

Boeddeker’s most recent pursuit isexterior rock work, which is oftenincorporated into patios and outdoorpatio and barbecue areas.

He said he would love to do somesort of big rock job — something thatwould involve a big custom pool, caves, waterfalls, a grotto, andstamping all around. “Somethingreally natural that blends in with thesurroundings,” he said.

Homeowners in Northern Californiaare remodeling and renovating likenever before. And many who love tospend time outside are integratingdecorative concrete into their outdoorrenovation projects.

Many are turning to Apex ConcreteDesigns, owned by Mark Foremanand Nick Johnson, which caters tohomeowners in the Sacramentosuburban and Sierra Nevada foothillneighborhoods, including Los Lagos,Sunridge Meadows, Granite Bay, andSerrano.

The company offers a wide variety ofservices, including stamped andstained concrete, self-leveling overlaydesigns, micro-finishes that are 1/8-inch thick or less, and concretetoppings with scoring. Nick and Markhave created everything from upperbalconies and patios to terraces andentries to driveways and pool decks— which are popular due to the area’sscorching valley heat that typicallyextends from spring to fall.

Homeowners love having the optionof choosing from an array of patterns— tile, wood, brick, granite, stone, and rock.

“But the ashlar slate is the mostpopular,” says Johnson, who has beenstamping concrete for the past 20years.

“We were the first to start imprintingconcrete (in the area), so we’ve got apretty good history,” he says. “Thesecret’s come out.”

He attributes that to the healthyproduction of tools that have been

introduced to the industry over theyears.

“As more tools become available, more people become aware ofdecorative concrete,” he says.

Coupled with the availability ofcustom colors and penetrating stains, the look has become even morenatural, making it more attractive tohomeowners, Foreman says.

“Decorative concrete has becomemore popular than stone, brick andtile (for exterior projects) because itcosts less, is better in quality and ithas the unlimited ability to be createdinto whatever the client wants as faras color, texture and pattern go,” hesays.

Colors and patterns for stampedconcrete are often chosen to blendwith other stone or tile elements at theresidence. Stamped concrete can alsobe blended with other decorativeconcrete elements such as exposedaggregate finishes and acid-etchstaining.

It’s also an attractive option becauseoutdoor tables don’t rock on concretelike they typically do on stone and tilesurfaces. Plus, Foreman says, they’reeasy to maintain with cleaning andresealing every few years.

Big Sky country is known for itsrustic appeal — the serenity of themountains and lakes and the lure offishing, skiing and hunting — so it’sno wonder that residents are excitedabout the recent arrival ofConcreations, a decorative concretecompany that specializes in rustic-looking decorative concrete.

Owner Jay Manning opened hisbusiness in Bigfork less than a yearago after spending 14 years creatingconcrete patios, terraces, columns, and fountains — virtually anything— in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico andseven years in Southern California. His new Montana clients span theFlat Head Valley, White Fish, andBigfork areas.

The company offers a full spectrumof decorative concrete finishes, including custom designs; inlaidrock tapestries; stamped and stainedpatios, walkways and driveways;masonry; flatwork; and fire pits.Concreations also specializes in afew products unique to the Montanaarea: concrete boat docks andradiant-heated driveways, whichmelt the snow quickly.

“With wood boat docks, the woodfrequently gets knocked down,” hesaid, explaining that lakesidehomeowners are requesting concretenot only for the ability to createdocks with color and patterns, butfor durability as well.

But Manning said the cornerstone ofhis work is achieving a rustic lookto blend in with a natural setting,

drawn from his experiences inMexico.

“In Mexico the designs are moreintricate … The architects there arealways trying new things,” Manningsaid. “They build multi-milliondollar homes that they want to makelook old.”

Manning said he learned myriadtechniques for achieving “old-looking” finishes, and he now wantsto try his hand at it in Montana.

He originally came to Montana withthe limited purpose of helping hisfather build his home.

“I decided to stay,” Manning said. “Isaw that decorative concrete wasdefinitely catching on here.”

Manning said he will keepdeveloping natural-lookingproducts, answering the call ofMontana homeowners. As morematerials come on the market, he isable to keep the inventive juicesflowing.

“Plus, my dad is a biochemist. Hehelps me thicken it up and helpswith different designs,” Manningsaid. “I always try to stay ahead ofthe game.”

When people see it, they want it.

Such has been the case for thedecorative concrete work producedby Dave and Mike Verlennich ofVerlennich Masonry and Concrete, based in Staples, Minnesota. Thecompany specializes in stampedconcrete, overlays, stenciling, andstaining.

Homeowners in the resort areas ofcentral and north central Minnesota, like Brainerd and surrounding lakeareas Alexandria, Walker, Bemidji,St. Cloud, and Tower, are clamoringfor decorative concrete hardscapes.

“We have been doing largedriveways, many 2,000 to 5,000square feet, lakeside patios andwrap-around porches,” said MikeVerlennich. “This is in keeping withthe rustic and log homes found inthe lake areas.”

The demand has kept the companybusy. They have seen businesssteadily increase and will do 50 to75 projects next season. In addition, their interior hardscape andcountertop business segment isgrowing rapidly.

The brothers say that sometimessomeone will see one of theirprojects out in public and have tofind out more. One woman visitingher local Dairy Queen eagerlyentered the drive-thru and asked notfor an ice cream treat but forinformation — she wanted to knowwho created the sandblasted, redcobblestone patio, accented in black.

When the woman found outVerlennich Masonry and Concretecreated the patio, she contactedthem and said she wanted hersidewalk to look just like the DairyQueen patio — minus the big DQlogo smack-dab in the center.

Verlennich’s projects all involve awide palette of colors — their stainscome in as many as 250 hues andshades.

“We do a lot of browns and tans, alot of charcoal tones, and somereds,” he said.

As far as textures go, Minnesotansseem to prefer a seamless granitetexture look and flagstone textures— stone that is natural to the area.

Because Minnesotans have such ashort warm period during the year, many try to make the most out oftheir outdoor space, Verlennich said.

“Many times patios are connected tothree season porches and outdoorkitchens. There is also an area trendof trying to blend in with naturalsurroundings,” he said.

Homeowners in the Oklahoma Citysuburbs are seeing decorativeconcrete in restaurants, stores, andsalons. Inspired by this new breed ofconcrete with its beautiful colors, variety of patterns, and ability tomeld with its environment, homeowners are now incorporatingconcrete into their homeimprovement projects.

Many seeking unique exteriordecorative concrete projects hit thejackpot with Concrete Creations, which caters to residents in theOklahoma City metro area, including Edmond and Moore, andGaillardia, an exclusivedevelopment in NorthwestOklahoma City.

Patios, porches, and driveways areextremely popular. Owner LawsonEdwards also has his share ofunique undertakings, including arecent request from a builder tocontribute to an old-fashionedlooking bridge — one like you’dfind in the Great SmokeyMountains, he says.

“I’ll be doing the stamped concreteunder the bridge,” Edwards said.

Stamped concrete is concrete that ispatterned to resemble brick, slate, flagstone, stone, tile, and evenwood. It is used to beautify pooldecks, driveways, entries andcourtyards, and patios.

Due to the wide array of patternsand colors available, and the lowerprice tag compared to othermaterials, stamped concrete is

becoming more popular andfrequent.

Edwards says Oklahomans tend togravitate toward the flagstone andRoman ashlar slate patterns — twoof Concrete Creation’s mostpopular.

“As far as colors go, earth tones arebig — the tans and browns,”Edwards said.

Edwards said that over the past sixyears since Concrete Creations hasbeen in existence, he has seen anenormous trend toward elaborateoutdoor living spaces.

“All kinds of hardscaping andlandscaping projects,” he said. “Andpeople are really into maintainingtheir yards more, too.”

He once worked on a house thatboasts two outdoor fireplaces and anOlympic-sized swimming pool.

But the biggest decorative concretetrend in the Oklahoma area is acidstaining, says Edwards.

“It’s booming. Every year I think itcan’t get any bigger and it does,” hesaid. “You don’t have to settle forthe old gray stuff anymore.”

While New England has always beenknown for its harsh winters, it’s nowbecoming known for DistinctiveConcrete, an area company thatspecializes in stamped concrete, coloracid stains, concrete repair, andcountertops.

Bill Guthro, who has owned thecompany for four years, said thebiggest challenge has been educatingNew England residents about all thatconcrete has to offer.

“People don’t know anything aboutit,” Guthro said. “Then they see (adecorative project) in a magazine andthey have to have it.”

Distinctive Concrete creates a rangeof stamped concrete projects. Ittypically involves coloring freshready-mixed concrete and embossingauthentic-looking patterns of brick, stone or wood into the partially setconcrete. Stamped concrete looksgreat around pools, patios andwalkways.

Guthro also points out that stampedconcrete is also very cost effective —in fact it is usually about one-thirdless than the price of installing naturalmaterials.

He also emphasizes that stampedconcrete can stand up to the frigid, harsh winters.

Guthro says stamped concrete is moredurable and will last longer than anyother type of masonry installation.Traditional pavers and cobblestonesettle unevenly during the freezingand thawing cycles of winter. Butstamped concrete is reinforced with

3/8-inch steel reinforcing rods placed24 inches on center each way in themiddle of the concrete. The steelresists the constant heaving during thefreezing and thawing cycles.

“If done properly, it does last,” hetells his clients.

In addition to the many residentialcustomers, Distinctive Concrete’sclientele includes the Marriott hotels,Holiday Inn hotels, Boston DesignCenter, Boston Police Department,Beverly Landmark School and severalrestaurants and retail merchants.

And both residential and commercialclients throughout New England lovethe range and depth of colors that canemanate from their concrete floors.Distinctive Concrete’s deeppenetrating concrete staining systemcreates beautiful, mottled color tonesin existing concrete surfaces, usuallyinterior floors.

“So it can enhance any decor whetherinterior, exterior, residential, orcommercial,” said Guthro. “Ittransforms old, worn concrete into anew and exciting look with a diversecoloring effect which penetrates deepinto the pores of the surface to createan aesthetically rich and variegatedfinish.”
