WELCOME TO THE FINE PRINT: So, it’s our annual Buyer’s Guide, the biggest issue of the year – and an incredibleopportunity to rant and rave. I was going to go on a tear this year! I wanted to scream about how some in the skateindustry continue to behave as though things haven’t changed. I was going to lash out at those who to continueto propagate their myopic vision. I was going to castigate those folks who for years dismissed any type of skate-boarding (except street) and now find themselves marketing longboards. Don’t even get me started on what itmeans to be “core”; man, I am sick of hearing that word. Oddly enough, the word “core” comes out of a numberof people’s mouths who seem to have no issue selling a huge amount of their product into the world’s largestmall-based skate retailer. I was even going to rant about safety gear. So, as you can tell, I was fired up! But then Ireceived this e-mail, and I realized that it speaks in a much more powerful way than anything I could rant about.I realized that we’ve transcended what “they” think or do; it doesn’t matter anymore. We have carved out our ownterritory and staked our own claim. Thank you for picking up the Buyer’s Guide and being part of Concrete Wave.Skateboarding isn’t changing…it has changed.

Hi, I just want to start out by saying that the article in the last issue entitled “Caution: Our Kids are in the Fast Lane”could not have come at a better time. You see, I was recently invited to go skate a set of hills about 40 minutesfrom my house with a group of guys that I met on Silverfish, some of which I had never met and all of which areolder than me. Of course with me only being 16 years old, I have to ask my parents before I drive anywhere, andwhen I first asked my mother she was 100% against it. A few days later the Winter issue came in the mail. I readthrough it and was super-excited to see that article. It was like you guys knew exactly what my mother was againstabout skating with these guys. After reading the article, she ended up allowing me to go, as long as I called tocheck in every hour. So I just wanted to thank you for that article. Without it I would have never had one of thebest days skating I have ever had. — Michael A.

Welcome to our 7th edition of our annual buyers’guide. Actually, come to think of it, this publica-

tion is more of a directory – maybe we should changethe name to Buyers’ Directory? Whatever the case, youwon’t find a more comprehensive listing of skate hardgoods anywhere. No matter what type of skateboardyou are looking for, we know you’ll find something ofinterest within these 100 pages.

Each year, we strive to offer something a little dif-ferent, and this year is no different. Thanks to thegood folks at Landyachtz, we are proud to offer youa complimentary poster. We hope that you proudlydisplay this poster in your window, so that you’llenjoy both sides! If this is not possible, then perhapsyou can alternate between the two sides over thecourse of a year?

When we conceived of the idea of a Buyer’s Guideback in 2004, we weren’t sure how to best make it work.For a number of years, we put product into various cat-egories. Not only did this get confusing for readers, it

drove my trusty designer, Markintosh, absolutely crazy.Trust me, you do not want to drive graphic artists crazy– it can be bad for your health! It took a bit of time, butwe eventually came to the decision to list products al-phabetically. So far, it’s worked out well.

Back in the late fall of 2009, we announced the Con-crete Wave Readers’ Choice Awards. I was suitablyimpressed by the amount of response we received.Thanks to Tailtap.com, one lucky entrant by the nameof Chris Magnusson won a $500 shopping spree. Butdon’t feel badly if you didn’t win.
