Main Water Feed
As this is usually clean water, you can use a
high-efficiency water pump to give you the
required pressure and volume to feed your plant.
It is important to specify this pump correctly as
this supply is crucial to production.
YOUR GUIDE TO PUMPS
FOR THE CONCRETE INDUSTRY
Admixture Pumps
These pumps are used to add liquid additives to
the concrete being mixed in the batching plant.
Many sites use Mono pumps or equivalent small
electric gear pumps (page 10) Spares for these
pumps are also readily available.
Wedge Pit Pumping
This application involves pumping dirty water or
slurry, containing aggregate and fibres.
The Audex AW range (pages 4 & 5) are ideal for
this, being designed for solids handling, having a
robust construction and an agitator to prevent
clogging. They also have strainers that can handle
small solids, and high-head versions are available.
Also consider Varisco when self-priming is
necessary instead (page 7).
Recycled Water Feed Back to Plant
As this water can be dirty, and could possibly
contain solids, it is important to use a pump
designed for solids-handling and clean water
pumps will not last in this application.
Audex AW (page 4 & 5) and Varisco Pumps
(page 7) are suitable. Attention should be paid to
the condition of the fluid in the storage tank (may
need agitating to prevent solids from settling).
Pumps play a vital part in producing ready-mix
concrete. The high-pressure, competitive nature
of this industry puts a premium on maximising
production and avoiding downtime. Delays due
to a pump taken out for repair can lead to
problems such as a wedge pit becoming
inoperable, mixing trucks not being cleaned and
batching plants coming to a halt.
It is vital to select the correct pump for the
application as this will give the most production
for the best wear life. Here’s a brief guide to the
main applications found on a ready-mix site and
our recommended pump solutions.

Pump Register
The industry-leading online asset management
tool that helps oversee your pumps, allowing you
to maintain the highest level of service. The
Register massively speeds up quoting and hence
delivery time if you have a pump that goes down
and helps both you and Atlantic identify details
when new spares are required. Additionally the
Pump Register allows you to establish service
reminders if needed and should you have several
sites, the Register will help you to standardise
your pumps, which results in simpler
maintenance and better pricing.
The Seal Relay Device
The Seal Relay Device can turn the pump off as
soon as it senses any moisture behind the first
seal. This removes the risk of the second seal
failing and the motor burning out which would
clearly result in a costly pump rebuild. This
means you only have to replace a low cost seal
rather than the expense of a new pump or
refurbishment. Furthermore, the pump is only
likely to be out of action for a matter of hours
over against the possibilities of a long and costly
repair project or long lead time on a new pump.
Hosing & Accessories
Atlantic Pumps have a complete range of hosing
and accessories to suit all pumping applications
across the ready-mix industry. Our accessories
include items such as float switches, control
panels and repair bandages offering you the
complete pumping solution.

ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS
The Audex Discharge Unit is a solution for the
quarrying industry, designed to accurately
measure this recycled water, to ensure that the
water discharged fits within predefined parame-
ters regarding pH, solids levels, and volume of
water.
Due to the importance of environmental sustain-
ability and the environmental agency regulations
– with potentially very large fines – Audex has
developed this product along with industry
leading measuring equipment manufacturers to
provide a hassle-free and simple way of reducing
the risk of introducing contaminated water into
the environment.
Available in various different combinations of
sensors and response actions, the standard
Discharge Units can measure the volume of
water discharged, its pH and any suspended
solids being transported and act on this informa-
tion for example to generate an alarm or turn
the pump off (the pump can be integrated in the
unit). Bespoke sensors and other actions, such as
connecting to a PC, are also available as required.

PIT CLEANING
WEDGE PIT
PUMPING
MICROSILICA Microsilica is an admixture used in the production of quick drying and high strength concrete giving it
better engineering properties. Due to the high solids content it is critical to ensure the correct pump is
installed. Here we look at some of the best practices.
Ensure the pump has flooded suction. This reduces wear life and the risk of cavitation. If the pump
needs to self prime, a positive displacement pump such as an air operated diaphragm pump is needed.
Install a valve beyond the pump to allow clean water to be circulated around the system.
When installing in flooded suction applications, try to ensure the microsilica has the shortest distance
possible from to tank to pump.
Cleaning out the materials that have spilt into
your conveyor pit can involve difficult access, out
of hours working and shoveling into a bucket in a
confined space.
The team at Atlantic Pumps visit ready-mix sites
up and down the country every day, and are
often regaled with tales of frustration at this
essential but awkward task. More than just an
inconvenience, there is a cost involved, from
downtime, out-of-hours working and lost
production. There is also the potential health and
safety hazards.
So maybe we could share a technique which has radically transformed this task for one of our
customers.
Rather than shoveling out the bottom of the pit,
the site sent down a high pressure hose and an
Audex AW submersible pump. The single
operator was then able to effortlessly hose down
the accumulated spillages, and the AW pump
made light work of disposing the silt-laden water
with up to 20mm aggregates. No back-breaking
shoveling, a job done in half the time, the result
was a clean and tidy conveyor pit and a more
productive plant.
A submersible pump is usually required to
remove the waste water out of the wedge pit,
often to be stored and recycled. This water can
then be used around the site, for example to
clean out the cement truck. However, the water
will often contain aggregate particles and metal
or plastic fibres. This presents a challenge as the
particles and fibres can clog up the pump or
damage it internally. Clogged pumps have to be
dismantled and cleaned up, and damaged parts
have to be replaced. This leads to downtime as
the parts have to be sourced and the pump taken
apart and re-assembled.
It is worth considering an industrial-type pump for this application, as the slightly higher purchase
price will be more than compensated by the
reduction in downtime these pumps offer. An
example of an industrial pump ideal for this
application is the Audex AW Series submersible
pumps
These pumps are manufactured with abrasion-
resistant materials, and the larger AW pumps
incorporate an agitator which eliminates clogging.
As well as reducing downtime, these pumps will
last much longer in the harsh environment found
in the ready-mix site, meaning you get more
value for your investment.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Does your pump not start? There may be a number of reasons why your
pump doesn’t start. Having checked the power
supply, the next thing to check would be that the
fuses haven’t blown and need replacing. Is the
cable damaged? If so it will need to be replaced.
Likewise check that the stator winding hasn’t
burnt out and needs replacing. It’s also worth
examining the impeller to make sure it’s not
blocked or jammed; if so, simply clean the wet
end out.
Pump starts but then stops? This may occur if the impeller is blocked or the
strainer clogged; both can be overcome by
cleaning of the parts. It is also worth examining
the pipe to ensure sure that isn’t blocked. Failing
this, the voltage may be too low due to cable
length. Another possible cause is that the
impeller rotation direction is wrong. Finally, if the
pump is running dry or the water is too warm
(above 60 degrees C), turn off the power. It may
also be worth looking at the overall picture – is the pump still suitable for the application? Feel
free to contact us if you are unsure.
T: +44 (0)800 118 2500 E: [email protected] W: atlanticpumps.co.uk 15
Is the pump giving too little output? There are a number of reasons why this may
occur. Firstly the impeller rotation direction may
be incorrect. Secondly, check the wear parts and
replace them if worn out. Also examine the
outlet and replace if leaking or cracked. Another
reason why the pump may be giving too little
output is if the pressure (head) is too high. If the
discharge hose has torn then replace with a new
hose.
