CONDACUM is Lat in for 'conf luence" ln the Belg ian
province of Antwerp, the area cailed Kontich is home to
to*po." t Jan Van der Roost . Cenlur ies ago Kont ich
stretched over a large area, inc luding the conf luence of
the Schelde and the Rupel Rivers' Excavations have
uncovered the remains of an ancient Roman fort at this
conf luence. Histor ians and phi lo logis ts agree that the
modern word "Kon t i ch " s tems f rom the l - a t i n '
"condacum". This suggests that the Bomans gave tl ' ' is
o lace i ts name, making Kont ich one of lhe ear l iest
settled communitles in the province of Antwerp'
C O N D A C U M w a s c o m m i s s i o n e d f o r t h e 2 5 t h
Anniversary of the founding of the Ar ls Counci l o Í
Kont ich. On th is occasion a f est iva l of Youth Orchestras
also cal led Conclacum, rvas held Jan Van der Roost
wrote CONDACUM for th is fest iva l ' The p iece musical ly
descr ibes the area cf Kont ich in two contrast ing par ts '

A B O U T T H E C O M P O S E R
Jan Van der Roost was born in Dut fe l , Be lg ium, in . l 956 '
A t a very young age he was in t roduced to the prominent
names in the w ind , fan faro and brass band reper to i re '
Soon he fe l t the .urge to pu t someth ing on paper h imse l f '
A t t h e L e m m e n s I n s t i t u t e h e r e c e i v e d a t h o r o u g h
mus ica l educat ion and earned a t r ip le laurea te d ip loma
for t rombone, mus ic h is lo ry and mus ic educat ion ' Today
Van der Boost teaches and conducts the lv ind band a t
the Lemmens lnst i tute. Besides being an arranger and a
composer, he conducts the Midden Brabant Brass Band
and is much sought a f te r as an ad jud ica tor and gues t
conductor.V a n d e r R o o s t ' s w o r k s l o r r v i n d b a n d f o i l o w t h e
