    Using conditionals to improve your

    coherence

Are you aiming to get an IELTS band 6 or above? If you are, can I suggest some grammarwork for you? In order to get to band 6 your writing needs not just to be correct, it also needs

to contain a mi of bot! sim"le and more com"le structures# In "lain Englis! t!is means usingsome more advanced grammatical structures$ ti"s and tricks aren%t always enoug!, you also

need to do some language work# I%m going to suggest looking at conditionals & t!at%s if

    clauses# I !ave ' reasons for t!is$

(# t!ey are relatively straig!tforward and ty"ically are familiar to most candidates & it%s an

    ac!ievable goal

'# t!ey !ave a real "ur"ose in t!e IELTS essay & t!ey%re not just going to !el" your grammar,

t!ey can actually make t!e writing "rocess easier for you by im"roving your co!erence and

etending t!e range of your vocabulary#

T!is is t!e main "oint$ when you are looking at grammar, you should concentrate on it’suse, not just it’s form# T!is is somet!ing familiar to language teac!ers, but often missed by

    language learners#

    Eam"les & a key way to "roduce co!erent "aragra"!s

    )!at do I mean by t!is? )ell, one of t!e keys to a good essay is to ensure t!at your "aragra"!sare co!erent# A co!erent "aragra"! takes one idea & in t!e to"ic sentence & t!en e"lains it a

little and t!en gives an eam"le# T!ese eam"les are critical for co!erence* es"ecially in an

    eam contet #

+nce you !ave understood t!at, t!e net ste" is to understand !ow to introduce eam"les# +ne "iece of language to do t!at is of course for eam"le-, t!en t!ere is for instance- or an

illustration of t!is is-# .ut my "oint !ere is t!at if- is an ecellent alternative for introducing

eam"les, not least because it ty"ically leads into a more etended eam"le wit! a greater

    range of to"ic vocabulary#

    Some examples

T!ese are eam"les from mysam"le IELTS essays# See !ow t!e if clause is used to etend,

    e"lain and illustrate t!e main idea and also !el"s you use more to"ic language$ t!is is a goodt!ing-#

T!e second "oint to make is t!at t!ere are many muc! more urgent "rojects on Eart! t!at

re/uire investment# If governments s"ent less money on s"ace researc!, t!en t!ey would beable to !el" solve some of t!ese "roblems suc! as "o"ulation control, elimination of diseases

like c!olera, global warming and food s!ortages# It seems to me t!at all of t!ese issues are

more im"ortant because t!ey affect t!e lives of millions of ordinary "eo"le# An illustration of

t!is is t!at t!e 0S government could "rovide food for all t!e starving "eo"le in t!e world if

t!ey did not s"end so muc! on 1ASA#

T!ere is, !owever, an im"ortant /ualification to be made# T!e internet and IT in general are notalways easy to access# T!ere are two grounds for saying t!is# 2irstly, t!ere are countries w!ere

t!ere is not universal internet access because of censors!i" or "oor tec!nological infrastructure#Secondly, t!e older generation can find it difficult to learn to use t!e tec!nology or install a

    modem# If we use t!e same eam"le, a grandmot!er would "robably "refer to send a lettert!roug! t!e "ost or make a sim"le tele"!one call t!an try using t!e net#

    T!ose w!o argue t!at museums s!ould be free ty"ically make one of two arguments# T!e first

    argument is t!at institutions like museums are a "ublic service and t!erefore t!ere s!ould befree access to t!e man in t!e street# If for eam"le t!ere was a c!arge only t!e wealt!y could

afford to enjoy works of art# T!e second, and related, argument is t!at if t!ey did levy a c!arge

fewer "eo"le would go to museums# T!is would be serious as t!ey are educational institutions

    and standards would fall#

T!ere is of course anot!er side to t!is argument and t!ere are "ossible reasons w!y emigration

    from develo"ing countries is not a com"lete solution# +ne suc! reason is t!at "eo"le w!o !ave

suffered from natural disasters will want to return to t!eir !omes as /uickly as "ossible and be

wit! t!eir families and relatives# T!is will be difficult if t!ey !ave moved to anot!er country#Anot!er reason is t!at it is often more effective to !el" t!e victims in t!eir own country as it

can cause t!em more stress if t!ey !ave to move to anot!er country wit! a different language

and strange customs# 2or eam"le, it could be difficult for someone from Ira/ to ada"t to t!eEnglis! way of life and weat!er#

    Practice

3y suggested "ractice is to start by just writing a few "aragra"!s to learn t!e tec!ni/ue, t!enw!en you are confident, try writing t!e full essay# 4ere is a sam"le "aragra"! from an IELTS

essay on free !ealt! service t!at needs im"rovement# 4ow could you im"rove it by using an

    eam"le wit! an if clause#

It is unfair for a !ealt! service to c!arge all "atients t!e same amount of money# Some "atientsare wealt!y and can afford any treatment, w!ile ot!er "atients are "oorer and cannot "ay for

    t!eir "rescri"tion#

If you like, you can "ost your solution as a comment to t!is "ost$ I s!all be "osting my

variation in a few days time#

    Need some grammar practice?

4ere is a fairly tricky /ui5 on conditionals using IELTS ty"e eam"les# I suggest you give it ago and if you find it too !ard, you t!en take a look at t!e link below it to revise your grammar#
