COMPANY & CONTEXT

“…brimmed with possibility and inventiveness… pushed at the boundaries of what theatre can and might be.” - Lyn Gardner in The Stage on Coney’s programme over lockdown, Aug 2020

Coney’s mission is to make play to spark change, always following key principles of adventure, curiosity, and loveliness.

Our award-winning approach combines interactive dramaturgy design with meaningful impact, in different formats of play including immersive theatre, games, and adventures. We often intergrate playful comms to connect and play with people wherever they are in the experience. Our work is always centered on the people we’re making play for, by and with, and is inspired by the belief that the world can be a magical place where ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

“Coney are very clever, very creative, very in tune with the fundamentals of the human need.”Emma Rice

Coney is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation, a limited company, and a registered charity led by JCEOs Adam Gallacher & Tassos Stevens and a board of Trustees. Coney HQ is the engine that delivers the Coney programme, crewed by a small core team, currently:

Ellie Browning – Producer (Arts Programme)Eliza Cass – Admin Assistant*David Finnigan – Maker & Researcher (on retainer)*Adam Gallacher – Interim Executive Director | JCEO*Rowan Lyster – General ManagerToby Peach – Director of the Young Coneys*Tassos Stevens – Director | JCEOCharlotte Walton – Finance Manager**part time

All roles in Coney HQ are distinct from roles any of us may take in the making of projects. There may be opportunities to develop skills and interests around lines of practice and take roles on projects.

Coney HQ programmes and produces work across the UK and beyond. We assemble teams for projects from a wider network and guild of makers, including a pool of (currently) 18 Associates. Our makers and associates feed into Coney’s overall ethos and exchange of practice, bringing expertise in fields from interaction research to sound design.

The wider Network of Coney is open to anyone interested to join, and we host open events for people to connect, play, and exchange. Currently there are over 860 people in our Network, from all over the world with a wide range of practices. In this way, we support and get to know emerging and established artists and makers from all disciplines.

W ORK & PROFILE

Coney is at the forefront of contemporary theatre, with a thriving expertise in interaction design, digital cleverness and public engagement. We work in partnership with players, makers and other organisations, and respond to what we find to create dynamic events that take place anywhere people gather (in person or virtually).

We make play with people at the heart of it all, following the three key principles of adventure, curiosity and loveliness, as if it might change the world a little for the better. Sometimes this play looks like interactive or immersive theatre. Sometimes it might feel like an adventure, a good conversation, or an exchange of gifts between strangers. Coney uses common digital technology cleverly, to meet audiences wherever they are: in theatres, schools, museums, workplaces, on the streets and online.

“The experience starts when you first hear about it and only ends when you stop thinking about it.” – Tassos Stevens, Director & JCEO of Coney

Our programmes of work have pivoted during the pandemic. Our arts programme presents pieces for remote audiences – like Telephone and Escape Zoom – and social-distanced audiences – like We Are Shadows: Brick Lane, an immersive smartphone adventure, made in partnership with Tamasha and Rightful Place; lines of work for and with communities like We The People (of this place) , a gameshow about a particular community with questions set by its people (most recently Margate and the Barbican & Golden Lane Estates); and developing our practice through exchange and offering this to help others bridge to audiences, an offer not only to our associates and network but also other organisations, like helping Headlong realise The Ghost Caller.

Our programme for by with young people and families features the Young Coneys, a company of young people aged 7-13 who are offered a rolling education in sparking change through making play for others (especially grown-ups). Highlights include The School For Grown-Ups in development, and Codename: Violet.

With a turnover of £326K in 2019/20, the charity receives income from various sources and especially our cross-sector programme - a model distinctive for an arts organisation. We work with clients and partners across sectors - education, corporate, sustainability, community, and social change - to deliver bespoke experiences: performances, games, workshops, consultancy and more. As well as generating income to reinvest in our core programme, we gain access to a range of expertise and new approaches, share our practice and the expertise of our makers more widely, and meet new audiences and players. Recent clients and partners include Barbican, Battersea Arts Centre, Chester Zoo, Financial Times, Greenpeace, Imperial War Museums, the National Trust, The National Archives, Natural History Museum, Nesta, The RSA, UCL Culture & Wellcome.

Recent public-facing commissions include COMPANION: MOON (commissioned by the Natural History Museum), an interactive movement and sound performance taking place alongside a large-scale artwork by Luke Jerram; and HYPEROBJECTIVE (co-commissioned by the Wellcome Trust & the Financial Times), a multiplayer contest reflecting on the power of collective action in the face of the climate crisis. In collaboration with Wandsworth Probation IOM Team we’ve developed A Lovely Intervention, a bespoke programme for clients who are ex-offenders. We’re developing new lines of practice for impacts including fostering connections and networks through play, especially to help social isolation and loneliness, and smarter more meaningful approaches to impact frameworks.
