Charles E. Elson is Professor
of Nutritional Sciences at the
Department of Nutritional Sciencesat the College of Agricultural and
Life Sciences at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison. He has
pioneered research into the
astounding antitumor effects
of terpenoid (essential oil)
components, foreshadowingmajor changes in the role certain
oils play in conventional science
as well as aromatherapy.
Charles E. Elson
Dr. Dennis M. Peffley researches
and lectures at the Department
of Pharmaceutical Biology of the
Finch University of the Chicago
Medical School. His research has
greatly improved the understand-
ing of how terpenoids distinguishbetween tumor and healthy cells
and prevent tumor growth.

Antitumor effects ofEssential Oil Components
Karl-Heinz Kubeczka is Professor
for Pharmaceutical Biology at the
University of Hamburg and one
of the world's most prominent es-
sential oil researchers. Under his
direction, first in Wrzburg and
later Hamburg, an immense bodyof knowledge on analysis, com-
position and pharmacology of es-
sential oils has been accumulated.
He is one of the founders of the
International Symposium on Es-
sential Oils (held the 31st time this
year: ISEO 2000). Prof. Kubeczkawill review the dramatic changes
in how secondary metabolites are
viewed. Not long ago essential
oils were considered metabolic
waste materials. Research has
reversed this view, uncovering a
diverse range of tasks essential
oils fulfill in the plant organism's
quest for survival.

Jeffrey C. Yuen is the 88th Gen-
eration Taoist Master of Yu Ching
Huang Lao Pai, Yellow Emperor/
Lao Tsu Sect, ordained by 87th
Generation Taoist Master YuWen. He has been immersed in
the study of Taoism and Chinese
Medicine since early childhood.
Mr. Yuen offers unparalleled
knowledge of the traditions of
Chinese medicine that fully inte-
grate physical, psychological andspiritual aspects of medicine. Mr.
Yuen will give two lectures, one
outlining the energetic (yin/yang)
and elemental (wood/fire/earth/
metal/water) qualities of essential
oils and another proposing TCM
strategies for the use of essentialoils as constitutional treatment for
cancer patients.

New
While western aromatherapy
derives much of its appeal from
successful infection treatments,
TCM views essential oils as con-
stitutional remedies. Accordingly, they are uniquely predisposed to
influence conditions like breast
cancer, in which 'essence' (yuan
qi) is implicated.
The very nature of essential oils
to stimulate the senses leads tothe recognition of aromatherapy
as a self-differentiating therapy,
effective in changing destructive
patterns tied to the way we see
the world. This provides new
insights for the use of essential
oils for chronic and autoimmuneconditions.
Absolute Divine:
Rare and Exotic Botani-
cal Absolutes
Absolutes contain a much broad-
er range of chemical constituents
than essential oils. This shows
in the exquisite fragrances of
many absolutes, which have no
counterpart among essential oils.
The author shares his insights of
decades of experience on thepuzzling range and tantalizing
depth of phenomena which can

Dipl. Ing. Klaus Drbeck has
specialized for many years in
trade promotion of medicinal and
aromatic plants from developing
nations. He will recount his jour-
neys in search of elusive oils.
As essential oils become valu-
able commodities, political re-
alities affect availability andprice, as shown by the shift in
Helichrysum supply: from French
summer crops to fall crops from
Bosnia-Herzegowina. Strange
circumstances (e.g. distilleries
where there are no plants) sur-
round the marketing of many oils.Mr. Drbeck will report on San-
dalwood and other examples.

Meet theDistillers
This year's distiller panel fea-
tures producers of a number of
truly important oils. Just as with
fine wine, the women and men
who craft the oils are a factor in
their identity.
Provence: Lavande fine (and
also Melissa - Tarragon - Clary
Sage - Thyme chemotypes)
Two distinguished cooperatives
from the Provence will present
'Fine Lavender', clones, Lavan-
dins and discuss common adul-
terations.
Crete: Vitex
Vitex agnus castus: Development
of a New Essential Oil. Meet the
makers of Vitex berry and other
precious oils from the island of
Crete.
Oregon: Peppermint
A family farm produces a Pep-
permint oil with perfect (low
menthone, low menthofurane,
high menthol) composition, cap-
turing the pristine purity of the
Oregon high desert.
