Overview:

Food Processing Industry in India:

The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution in world food trade every year. In India, food has become a high-profit industry by reason of the scope it offers for value addition, particularly with the food processing industry getting recognized as a high-priority area in this liberalized era.

The food industry, which is currently valued at US$ 39.71 billion! is expected to grow at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11% to US$65.4 billion by 2018. Food and grocery account for around 31% of India’s consumption basket. Accounting for about 32% of the country’s total food market, The Government of India has been instrumental in the growth and development of the food processing industry through the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) by making all efforts to encourage investments in the business. It has approved proposals for joint ventures (JV), foreign collaborations; industrial licenses and 100% export oriented units.

In India, due to non-segregation of primary and secondary processing of food and lack of farm level processing resulted in to high cost of finished goods due to multiple handling chains, low production volume and wastages in process.

Though today India is 3rd largest producer of agriculture and food producer, in terms of processed food we are way behind the developed nation. The fruit processing in India is around 2-4% against 70-80% in developed nations and even developing nations like Thailand has reached the level of 30%. In case of value addition, India stands at around 20% against 45% of some developing nations.

This low growth in Food processing industry is resulting in to high wastages of farm produce, which is almost 7% in case of Fruits & Vegetables and on an average 4-6% in pulses, cereals, oil seeds and poultry produce.

Govt. of India, through its Ministry of Food Processing (MoFP) has been promoting food processing industry and as a government initiative. In 12th Five Year Plan (2012 - 2017), total outlay for 5 years is Rs.15,304 Cr. and out of this Rs.10,300 Cr. are allotted for Infrastructure and Food processing sector, which is about 2/3rd of total outlay. This is expected to generate an investment opportunity to the tune of Rs.35,000 Cr. Compared to 10th and 11th Plan, where total outlay was Rs.650.00Cr and Rs.4031Cr respectively, the increase in outlay has substantially increased.
