International Pipeline Conference 2016

In September 2016, members of the pipeline industry from around the world will gather in Calgary for the 11th International Pipeline Conference (IPC 2016). Organized by volunteers representing international energy corporations, energy and pipeline associations and regulatory agencies, the IPC has become internationally renowned as the world’s premier pipeline conference. This is a not-for-profit conference and proceeds continue to support educational initiatives and research in the pipeline industry. The theme for this year’s conference is Leading and Innovating.

Why Attend

This biennial conference is a unique opportunity for you to learn about the latest pipeline industry innovations, developments and solutions. Respected authors, experts and industry leaders will be discussing pipeline management, safety culture and standards with pipeline professionals from across the globe.

Over 1,200 attendees are anticipated to attend to collaborate and share knowledge, through a comprehensive conference program that includes technical paper presentations, tutorials, panel discussions and the best author competition. The high-quality of the technical papers, the professional organization and the tremendous support of the industry has made IPC the premier pipeline industry event in the world.

As a member of the media, you’ll have the opportunity to attend sessions, participate in media-specific Q&A sessions and meet the conference chairs and many other ambassadors of IPC2016. To arrange to be accredited to attend IPC, please see the last page of this brochure.

Highlights of the Conference

IPC 2016 will feature:• Leading pipeline industry keynote speakers• Representatives from over 30 countries will be presenting

over 300 papers in eight technical tracks• Over 20 experts in specific fields who will share their

knowledge in tutorials• Members of the international pipeline industry will present five

panels on current topics of interest

ASME PSD Best Student Paper Competition

The ASME PSD organizes the Best Student Paper Competition as part of the International Pipeline Conference (IPC). Entrants are judged by a committee of pipeline experts selected by the ASME Pipeline Systems Division Executive Committee.

All student papers accepted by the IPC 2016 were reviewed for Best Student Paper status. A small number of finalists were chosen to present their papers in a dedicated poster session in addition to their regular technical tracks. A winner will be announced at the Conference Award Luncheon on Friday, September 30.

ASME PSD IPC / RPC Best Paper Award

Each year the IPC, through ASME, and the Rio Pipeline Conference (RPC), through the Instituto Brasileiro de Petroleo de Gas (IBP) work in partnership on an exchange of “best papers”. In 2015 the IBP presented the Calgary Pipeline Award at its ninth biennial Pipeline Seminar in Rio de Janeiro. The winner of this award will present their paper at IPC 2016. As part of this reciprocal agreement, the IPC 2016 best paper winner will present their winning paper at RPC 2017.

This program enhances both programs by sharing technical information with a broad audience across North and South American pipeline communities.

The 2016 Pipeline Exposition

In conjunction with the Conference, there will be a three day Pipeline Exposition held in the TELUS Convention Centre opening on September 27. Companies from around the world will present their operating, technical and construction experience and expertise, and showcase the latest technology, equipment and services available to the pipeline industry.

Key Note Plenary Session SpeakerMr. Rex MurphyHe is one of the faces of Canada, radiating intelligence and trustworthiness.

His mind is as sharp as the Rockies.

National treasurers need no introduction, and so it is with Rex Murphy, writer, broadcaster and professional thinker.

He knows what makes Canadians tick, and what drives our political and social affairs. He makes us important, reminds us we have culture

beyond hockey. His thought-provoking, sometimes stinging commentary and original insights are delivered through a vocabulary to make Webster’s consider updating.

Canadian’s are treated to weekly commentary from Rex on CBC’s The National along with his Saturday column in the National Post. He’s also acted as an editorial contributor to CBC Radio’s Definitely Not the Opera. For over 20 years he acted as the host and moderator of CBC Radio’s Cross Country Checkup. The show brought over 1 million listeners and at times 15,000 callers wanting to join in discussions. He calls himself a Newfoundlander biting at the heels of Canadian conservatism.

Murphy, a Rhodes Scholar, was born and raised in St. John’s, Nfld., where he graduated from Memorial University and, in 1968 went to Oxford University, along with former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Rex ran twice in provincial elections and lost both times. Maybe he was too honest? Certainly, as a speaker, he’s quality. He’s profound. Oh, and entertainer Murphy can spin a funny yarn. Each presentation is customized to your topic and audience with a touch of his delicious “Rex appeal.”

Wednesday Luncheon SpeakerMr. Jay IngramScience broadcaster and writer Jay Ingram was co-host of Discovery Channel’s science show, Daily Planet for 16 years. It remains television’s only daily hour-long prime-time science and nature news magazine. Jay joined Discovery in 1994 and was instrumental in helping shape the program format.

From 1979 to 1992, Ingram hosted CBC Radio’s Quirks and Quarks and earned two ACTRA Awards, one for Best Host. In 1992 and 1993,

Ingram hosted two CBC Radio series: Cranial Pursuits, a series “by, for and about the brain”, and The Talk Show, a series bout language that won a Science in Society Journalism Award. For 10 years, Jay wrote articles for popular children’s publication Owl Magazine. He wrote a weekly science column for the Toronto Star for 12 years, and is currently a columnist for Canadian Wildlife magazine.

Since 2005 he was been Chair of the Science Communications Program at the Banff Centre, a unique undertaking to promote creative science writing, broadcasting and social media. He is also co-founder of Beakerhead, an arts and engineering happening which began in 2013 in Calgary, Alberta.

In 1984, Jay was awarded the Sandford Fleming Medal from the Royal Canadian Institute for his efforts to popularize science, and he also earned the Royal Society of Canada’s McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science in 1997. In 2000, Jay was awarded a Michael Smith Award for Science Promotion by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. He is a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Alberta, and has received five honorary doctorates. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and in 2009 he was named to The Order of Canada.

Jay has written thirteen books, three of which have won Canadian Science Writers’ Awards and almost all of which have been on the bestseller list. They have been translated into 14 languages. He is the 2015 recipient of the Walter C. Alvarez award for medical writing given by the American Medical Writers Association.
