FRIDAY PROGRAMME On Friday morning, the MSK team will run a much requested update for the popular BAPO short course “Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of Musculoskeletal (MSK) Foot and Ankle Problems for Orthotists”. This 3 hour session will provide Orthotists with an update on recent evidence pertaining to MSK foot and ankle pathologies, as well as a practical session demonstrating clinical assessment techniques, which will be easily transferable to clinical practice. We are delighted to now offer this opportunity as part of their full weekend registration to all Orthotists attending the BAPO conference in 2018. We look forward to seeing you there! We’ll also be joined on Friday by Lynzy Holding who will join us to present a 2 hour workshop session entitled “Silicone Bikini Socket Manufacture Workshop”. As part of a national campaign to raise awareness of Sepsis we will hear from Dr John Parker, Sepisis lead from the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, who will talk about what Sepsis is, how to spot the signs of infection and steps to take to ensure successful treatment. We will be joined by Niamh Boyle, Sepsis survivor and upper limb amputee and Finding Your Feet founder Corinne Hutton, Sepsis survivor and quad amputee who will share their inspirational stories. TECHNICAL PROGRAMME Again for 2018 we will be running a specific Technical Programme on the Friday of Conference, that is aimed at both Technicians and clinicians. This year we have decided that the programme will have a more practical feel with attendees able to “get their hands dirty” so to speak. We have brought together a range of practical presentations including KAFO joint alignment, the science of side steel bending and we will also look at the construction of modern day footwear, to allow technicians to have a greater understanding of what they are likely to find when adapting a patient’s own footwear. There will also be a practical demonstration of 3D printing, its uses in Prosthetics and Orthotics and we will also look at the use of temperature sensors in devices to allow us to chart device usage. Another presentation with give a practical view on the subject of footplate pitch and contouring on devices. All of the presenters will be encouraging interaction from the session attendees and there will also be time for questions and interactive feedback in each workshop. SATURDAY ORTHOTIC PROGRAMMEThe Saturday Orthotic programme will hear from Diana Currie who will provide us with an insight to challenging hernia prescriptions and problem solving tips. Karen Edwards, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in Neurodisability at Great Ormond Street Hospital will present on Spasticity or Dystonia? Now that is the question!!The OETT Keynote speaker Dr David Armstrong will be joining us via Live Webinar from Los Angles to discuss diabetic foot assessment, including emerging technologies, diagnosis - including pre-ulcerative treatment diagnostic techniques, and treatment - from conservative methods to the most invasive surgical reconstructions. Why prescribe a rigid AFO unless you have too? Challenging the fundamental design of AFO’sSimon DickinsonAs time passes our understanding of the practical application of physics through orthotic intervention changes. Some paradigms are found to be reliable (e.g. Isaac Newton’s laws of motion), farcical (e.g. Sub-Talar Neutral theory), misguided (e.g insoles make children with flat feet grow straighter) and others are yet to be fully challenged. The evidence behind the design of custom AFO’s is fundamentally poor. Treatment protocols are based on limited evidence in controlled environments with small sample studies and despite the low levels of evidence these protocols have become “gold standard” in the eyes of some clinicians. But what if we collectively got it wrong? What if we could let impaired ankles move in a controlled way? Is gait lab perfection more important than function? The human ankle joint in a non-impaired patient is vital in allowing a smooth walking and running pattern on varying surfaces but when it comes to AFO design for neurologically impaired patients the ankle’s motion is often blocked with a rigid AFO in the hope of creating “gait lab perfection” in a controlled environment.

A unified approach to the management of foot drop and more complex gait disordersJon GrahamPhysiotherapists and Orthotists share a passion for improving the quality of life for patients byoptimising their mobility through therapy, exercise, FES, Orthotic provision and more recently the useof exoskeletons. However, sometimes “we” can be like the blind men in the Indian parable who try to identify an “elephant” by touching a single part – it’s a snake (trunk) versusit’s a fan (ears). Physiotherapists “touching” on swing. Orthotists “touching” on stance. This talk provides an overview of Neurological Physiotherapy, FES and exoskeletonsand offers a vision of a unified approach to the treatment of foot drop and more complex gait disorders.

In addition to the clinical programme BAPO will again run its popular poster competition. This will continue the clinical theme of Conference and is an opportunity to share research, case studies and new techniques with colleagues without the stress of having to stand up and speak to a large audience.  Submissions will be divided into four categories: - • Prosthetists/Orthotists• Technicians/Assistants• Students• Other

Best poster in each category will be awarded £100, with a bottle of bubbly to the runners up.A detailed guide and example is available from the Conference section of the BAPO website or from the Secretariat on request.

FOR

SUNDAY WORKSHOPBAPO Conference weekend will conclude with a workshop from Paul Charlton, Dr. Cleveland Barnett & John Ross presenting “Prosthetic and Orthotic interventions for optimising balance and gait in peripheral neuropathy and lower limb amputation.”

Exclusively for recent graduates (2015-2017) and students

Are you a graduate from the years 2012-17? We invite you to come and present at our 2018 Conference in front of a small audience made up of students and recent graduates.Following the success of last year’s speakeasy which covered a wide range of engaging subjects, we have decided to pursue a similar line of interest and explore the following topics:• Experiences applying for jobs as a student and post-graduate• Practicing abroad in Europe, America, Australasia• Working under the NHS vs private practice• Experiences in clinic as a post-graduate• Tips and questions brought to light by recent practice• Ideas on new and alternative techniques and products available to the P&O community• Research and continued study as a practicing clinicianThese are just a few ideas but we are open to any suggested topic of your choice! Presentation slots last 10 – 15 minutes in a relaxed environment, where we encourage speakers to share their ideas and interests with fellow members.Speakeasy is a great way to step onto the presenting platform, offering a fantastic opportunity to recent graduates to spark conversation and for others to learn something new!Should you have any questions or queries don’t hesitate to contact us on the email below. If interested please submit a short blurb using the title ‘speakeasy’ about your chosen topic to [email protected] by Thursday 1st of February 2018.
