Welcome to CUCURBITACEAE 2018!

Dear CUCURBITOLOGISTS,

Since 1980, we have periodically gathered from around the world at eight venues across the U.S. to report the latest research results on the frontiers of cucurbit biology, chemistry, germplasm resources, genetics and breeding, host plant resistance, and production and physiology. At this ninth meeting, which is being held at one of the premiere universities in the world with deep roots in agricultural research, we will share current research progress and, like previous conferences, seek glimpses into “cucurbits’ future.” Public scientists — both university and USDA — organized the previous Cucurbitaceae conferences with strong industry support. Cucurbitaceae 2018 was initially conceived and organized with a deliberate industry-public partnership in mind. We realized Davis, California was the ideal location for the 2018 conference due to the confluence of a global seed industry base and the University of California, Davis, with its rich and significant contributions to cucurbit production worldwide.

Cucurbitaceae 2018 consists of eight topical sessions, a general poster session, and four crop-specific meetings along with Cucurbit Genetics Cooperative meeting and what should prove to be an informative powdery mildew session. Thanks to the innovative folks at the UC Davis Seed Biotechnology Center, there is a new addition to Cucurbitaceae: “One-Minute Poster Preview Presentations” on Tuesday morning. Several interesting tours will take us out of the lecture hall on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday evening, we meet up with Seed Central after squash, honey and olive oil tasting opportunities in the Robert Mondavi Institute’s Sensory Theater.

On behalf of the Scientific Committee and the Conference Organizing Team, we welcome you. May you renew acquaintances and make new friendships — personal and professional.

Yours sincerely,Bill Copes, HM.Clause, Davis, CAJim McCreight, USDA, Salinas, CA
