Problem-Solving Application
The cost to place an ad in a newspaper for one week is a linear function of the number of lines in the ad. The costs for
3, 5, and 10 lines are shown. Write an equation in slope-intercept form that represents the function. Then find the
cost of an ad that is 18 lines long.
Lines 3 5 10
Cost 13.5 18.5 31
The answer will have two parts—an equation in slope-intercept form and the cost of an ad that is 18 lines long.
The ordered pairs given in the table— (3, 13.50) , (5, 18.50) , and (10, 31) —satisfy the equation.
You can use two of the ordered pairs to find the slope. Then use point slope form to write the equation. Finally,
write the equation in slope intercept form.
![Page 18: CONFIDENTIAL 1 Grade 8 Algebra1 Point-Slope Form](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062805/5697c00f1a28abf838cca582/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

Step1: Choose any two ordered pairs from the table to find the slope.
y2 - y1 _= 18.50 - 13.50 = 5 = 2.5x2 - x1 5 - 3 2
m =
Step2: Substitute the slope and any ordered pair from the table into the point-slope form.
y - y1 = m (x - x1 )
y – 31 = 2.5(x – 10)
Use (10, 31).
Use (3, 13.50) and (5, 18.50).
Step2: Substitute the slope and any ordered pair from the table into the point-slope form.
y - 31 = 2.5 (x - 10)
y - 31 = 2.5x – 25
y = 2.5x + 6
Distribute 2.5.
Add 31 to both sides.
![Page 19: CONFIDENTIAL 1 Grade 8 Algebra1 Point-Slope Form](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062805/5697c00f1a28abf838cca582/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
CONFIDENTIAL 19
Step5: Find the cost of an ad containing 18 lines by substituting 18 for x.
y = 2.5x + 6y = 2.5 (18) + 6 = 51The cost of an ad containing 18 lines is $51.
Look Back
If the equation is correct, the ordered pairs that you did not use in Step 2 will be solutions. Substitute (3, 13.50)
and (5, 18.50) into the equation.
y = 2.5x + 6
13.50 2.5 (3) + 6
13.5 7.5 + 613.5 13.5
y = 2.5x + 6
18.50 2.5 (5) + 6
18.5 12.5 + 618.5 18.5
