TESTING OF ACRYLIC SAMPLE

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Sample designation and description:

A single sample, comprising a series of various acrylic castings and one bag of swarf, was

received on the 26th January 2012; it was assigned a unique Smithers Rapra internal sample code

and identified as follows:

SR5699 - Acrylic lot #s '13435, 12461, 12563, 13441, 13677, 13472'

1.2 Tests requested:

Testing to Table 2-3.4-2 of ASME PVHO-1-2007.

2 EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS

All testing was performed at Smithers Rapra Shawbury.

The samples were tested in accordance with the following standards, except as otherwise noted:

2.1 Tensile Properties

The tensile properties were determined in general accordance with ASTM D638-08 using a

universal screw type tensile testing machine. Two type 1 dumbbells were tested at a speed of 5

mm/minute. Elongation was measured using a clip-on type extensometer fitted with a displacement

transducer. Data was recorded autographically. Samples were conditioned for a minimum of 96

hours at 23±2°C and 50±1 0% relative humidity prior to testinq.

2.2 Compressive Properties

The tensile properties were determined in general accordance with ASTM D695-08a using auniversal screw type tensile testing machine. Two rectangular blocks of nominal dimensions 2 inch

x 0.5 inch were tested at a speed of 1.3 mm/minute. Displacement was recorded using a

displacement transducer. Data was recorded autographically. Samples were conditioned for a

minimum of 96 hours at 23±2°C and 50±1 0% relative humidity prior to testing.

2.3 Compressive Deformation

Compressive Deformation was determined in accordance with PVHO-1 method 2-3.7(c) using a

universal screw type tensile testing machine fitted with an environmental chamber. Two block

samples, nominally measuring 0.5 inch cube, were tested at !50°Cfor 24 hours. Displacement was

measured using a displacement transducer. Data was recorded autographically. Samples were

conditioned for a minimum of 96 hours at 23±2°C and 50±10% relative humidity prior to testing

2.4 Visual Clarity

Visual Clarity was determined in accordance with PVHO-1-2007 2-3.7(e). Clear print of size 7 lines

per column inch and 16 characters per linear inch was viewed from a distance of 20 inches through

the thickness of the casting with the opposite faces polished. The tab end of a type 1 dumbbell

sample was used for the determination. Samples were conditioned for a minimum of 96 hours at

23±2°C and 50±10% relative humidity prior to testing.

2.5 Ultraviolet Transmittance

Ultraviolet Transmittance was performed in general accordance with PVHO-1 method 2-3.7(d)

using a Thermo Fisher Scientific Evolution 600 UVNIS Spectrometer. The sample tested was a

rectangular block of nominal dimensions 2 inch x 0.5 inch x 0.5 inch. Measurement was made

between 290nm and 330nm.

2.6 Residual Monomer

Residual Monomer Content was determined by Gas Chromatography with Flame ionisation

Detection (GC-FID) using standard methodology for MMA determination in PMMA. Testing was

performed using Smithers Rapra procedure SOP-RT011.35.02. I
