Overview This document provides a reference to Mitel Authorized Solutions providers for configuring the Mitel 3300ICP to connect to EarthLink. The different devices can be configured in various configurations depending on your VoIP solution. This document covers a basic setup with required option setup.

Interop Status

The Interop of EarthLink trunk line has been given a Certification status. This service provider or trunking device will be included in the SIP CoE Reference Guide. The status EarthLink trunk line achieved is:

The most common certification which means EarthLink SIP trunk has been tested and/or validated by the Mitel SIP CoE team. Product support will provide all necessary support related to the interop, but issues unique or specific to the 3rd party will be referred to the 3rd party as appropriate.

This was the test setup to generate a basic SIP call between EarthLink trunk line and the 3300 MCD 4.2.

Tested Features

This is an overview of the features tested during the Interop test cycle and not a detailed view of the test cases. Please see the SIP Trunk Side Interoperability Test Plans (08-4940-00034) for detailed test cases.

Device Limitations and Known Issues

This is a list of problems or not supported features when the EarthLink SIP trunk is connected to Mitel 3300ICP.

Feature Problem Description

Reliable Provisional Responses (PRACK)

Although Reliable Provisional Responses (PRACK) is supported over EarthLink SIP trunk, we recommend disabling this parameter in Mitel 3300ICP (in SIP Peer Profile). When Reliable Provisional Responses are enabled (i.e. set to “No”), the audio path will fail in 30 seconds.

This happens because EarthLink challenges PRACK, received from 3300ICP, with "401-Unauthorized", and 3300 is unable to respond properly. No 200OK issued.

Recommendation: This issue will be corrected in the next software release for 3300ICP. Contact Mitel for further details.

Calls to “busy” PSTN numbers

When Mitel extension calls to a “busy” PSTN number, the audible “busy” tone is heard almost immediately. However, SIP message “486 – Busy Here” arrives at 3300ICP only after 30 seconds. Because of this, forward trunk clearing is impossible until the real SIP message 486 received.

Recommendation: none. Contact EarthLink for further details.

Teleworker configuration Teleworker extensions experience one-way audio issue when calling over the SIP trunk.

Recommendation: In Teleworker server (MBG), add the EarthLink network address to Security->Local Networks and indicate Adtran’s LAN IP address as a router.

Packetization rate The EarthLink SIP trunk fully supports only 20ms packets rate.

Recommendation: keep packets rate of 20ms in 3300ICP.

Video Video functionality is unavailable over the trunk.

Recommendation: none

Fax G.711 faxing is possible over the trunk only.

Recommendation: none. EarthLink does not support T.38 faxing.

Configuration Notes This section is a description of how the SIP Interop was configured. These notes should give a guideline how a device can be configured in a customer environment and how the 3300ICP programming was configured in our test environment.

Disclaimer: Although Mitel has attempted to setup the interop testing facility as closely as possible to a customer premise environment, implementation setup could be different onsite. YOU MUST EXERCISE YOUR OWN DUE DILIGENCE IN REVIEWING, planning, implementing, and testing a customer configuration.

3300ICP Configuration Notes

The following steps show how to program a 3300 MCD 4.2 to interconnect with EarthLink.

Network Requirements

• There must be adequate bandwidth to support the voice over IP. As a guide, the Ethernet bandwidth is approx 85 Kb/s per G.711 voice session and 29 Kb/s per G.729 voice session (assumes 20ms packetization). As an example, for 20 simultaneous SIP sessions, the Ethernet bandwidth consumption will be approx 1.7 Mb/s for G.711 and 0.6Mb/s. Almost all Enterprise LAN networks can support this level of traffic without any special engineering. Please refer to the 3300 Engineering guidelines for further information.

• For high quality voice, the network connectivity must support a voice-quality grade of service (packet loss <1%, jitter < 30ms, one-way delay < 80ms).

Assumptions for the 3300ICP programming

• The SIP signaling connection uses UDP on Port 5060.

Licensing and Option Selection – SIP Licensing Ensure that the 3300 is equipped with enough SIP trunking licenses for the connection to the EarthLink. This can be verified within the License and Option Selection form.

Enter the total number of licenses in the SIP Trunk Licences field. This is the maximum number of SIP trunk sessions that can be configured in the 3300 to be used with all service providers, applications and SIP trunking devices.

Class of Service Assignment

The Class of Service Options Assignment form is used to create or edit a Class of Service and specify its options. Classes of Service, identified by Class of Service numbers, are referenced in the Trunk Attributes form for SIP trunks.

Many different options may be required for your site deployment, but ensure that “Public Network Access via DPNSS” Class of Service Option is configured for all devices that make outgoing calls through the SIP trunks in the 3300.

Network Elements

Create a network element for a SIP Peer (EarthLink) as shown in Figure 4.

Configuration of EarthLink SIP trunk assumes that Mitel 3300ICP will be communicating with a Adtran IP Business Gateway, which acts as a SIP Stateful Proxy . (In our test environment, we used Adtran 908e. See Figure 1 for the test environment).

Because of this, we only have to configure Adtran’s internal IP address in Network Element form and leave all fields under SIP Peer Specific at their default settings.

Trunk Attributes (trunk service number)

The Trunk Attributes is defined for Trunk Service Number (27), which will be used to direct incoming calls to an answer point in the 3300ICP.

Set the number of Class of Service that was configured in the section above (7).

Program the Non-dial In Trunks Answer Point according to the site requirements and what type of service was ordered from your service provider.

The figure below shows configuration for incoming DID calls. The 3300ICP will absorb the first 6 digits of the DID number received from the EarthLink SIP Trunk leaving 4 digits for the 3300 to translate and ring the 4-digit extension.

For example, the EarthLink SIP Trunk delivers number 256-241-9300 to the 3300. The 3300 will absorb the first 6 digits (256-241) leaving the 3300 to ring extension 9300. Extension 9300 must be programmed as a valid, dialable number in the 3300ICP. As an alternative way, you can create a System Speed Call number to associate number 9300 with the real telephone extension on 3300ICP. Please refer to the 3300 System Administration documentation for further programming information.

SIP Peer Profile

The recommended connectivity via SIP Trunking does not require additional physical interfaces. IP/Ethernet connectivity is the part of the 3300ICP platform. The SIP Peer Profile should be configured with the following options:

Network Element: The selected SIP Peer Profile needs to be associated with previously created “EarthLink” Network Element. Registration User Name: Not required

Address Type: Select IP Address.

Maximum Simultaneous Calls: This entry should be configured to the maximum number of SIP trunks provided by EarthLink.

Outbound Proxy Server: Leave empty.

SMDR Tag: If Call Detail Records are required for SIP Trunking, the SMDR Tag should be configured (by default there is no SMDR and this field is left blank).

Trunk Service: Enter the trunk service number that was previously configured – 27 in this configuration.

Calling Line ID Options: The Default CPN (Calling Party Number) is applied to all outgoing calls unless there is a match in the "Outgoing DID Ranges" of the SIP Peer Profile. The CPN value is programmed in Adtran 908e.

CPN Restriction: Set it to “No” unless you want/need to hide Callers’ ID from PSTN users. When it is set to “Yes”, the call will be presented as coming from “[email protected]”.

Authentication Options: Configure these settings as directed by EarthLink

SDP Options: Currently (July 2011) video streams are not supported over EarthLink SIP trunk. Set option Allow Peer to Use Multiple Active M-Lines to “No”.

Currently, RTP Packetization Rate fully supported over the EarthLink SIP trunk is 20ms only.

Set Avoid Signaling Hold to the Peer to “Yes”. When Mitel’s extension initiates Hold and this parameter set to “No”, then Music-on-Hold may not be heard at far end.

Set Force Sending SDP in Initial Invite Message to “Yes”. If set to “No”, then ringback tone is not heard on outbound calls.

Although Reliable Provisional Responses are supported over EarthLink SIP trunk, we recommend set parameter Disable Reliable Provisional Responses to “Yes”. When Reliable Provisional Responses are enabled (i.e. set to “No”), the audio path will fail in 30 seconds.

Timers: You might set some value for Session Timer. This timer clears and resets the unresponsive connections and it is not recommended to set it to 0.

ARS Digit Modification Plan

Ensure that Digit Modification for outgoing calls to EarthLink SIP trunk absorbs or inject additional digits according to your dialling plan. In our test environment, 3300ICP will be absorbing 3 digits (as of this test environment, we need to dial 904 to access EarthLink SIP trunk; thus, digits 904 will be absorbed).

ARS Routes

Create a route for SIP trunks connecting a trunk to EarthLink SIP Trunk. In this test environment, the SIP trunk is assigned to Route Number 43. Choose SIP Trunk as a routing medium and choose the SIP Peer Profile and ARS Digit Modification entry created earlier.

ARS Digits Dialed

ARS initiates the routing of trunk calls when certain digits are dialed from an extension. In this test environment, when a user dials 904, the call will be routed to EarthLink SIP Trunk (i.e. Route 43). For local calling, 3300 ICP expects 10 digits to be dialed after dialing of 904.

Fax Configuration

Currently EarthLink supports faxing with codec G.711 only. Because of this, there is no need in any special configuration for faxing in Mitel 3300ICP.


Adtran 908e Configuration settings (Optional)

EarthLink provides the configuration file for Adtran IP Business Gateway. This file contains all required settings to configure the gateway to connect to EarthLink SIP trunk.

So, every configuration file is a site specific. Below, we provide the configuration file used in Adtran Total Access 908e just for reference.
