Signs and Symbols of Confirmation
Oil of chrism symbolises the setting a part of the candidate for a special purpose. Laying on of hands This symbolises the calling of the Holy Spirit on a person. This ritual has occurred since earliest times in the church.
Current Ritual Structure
Confirmation takes place after the liturgy of the Word during a mass
1. The candidate who is about to receive Confirmation is presented.
2. Baptismal promises are renewed.
3. The laying on of hands now takes place.
With the words "( name) be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit". The candidate then responds with Amen. Then the Bishop states " Peace be with you" and the candidate replies " and also with you.
4. Anointing with Chrism
The candidate who has previously chosen a confirmation name kneels before the Bishop who then reads out his/ her name. Each candidate has a sponsor who places their hand on their shoulder, followed by the Bishop anointing the candidates forehead with the Oil of Chrism.
5. The concluding rite takes place after general intercessions.
This rite consists of prayers by the Bishop or Priest for blessings on the candidate and church family.
