NOVEMBER 17, 2013 “Pursuing the Gospel challenge in turbulent times” Confirmation This Sunday Guest Preacher: The Right Reverend C. Fitzsimons Allison Retired Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina Confirmation is a rite of initiation in the Anglican tradition, carried out through anointing, the laying on of hands, and prayer, for the purpose of bestowing the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is seen as the sealing of the covenant made in Holy Baptism. It also bestows full membership in a local parish upon the recipient. In the Anglican tradition Confirmation is a sacrament. The Rite of Confirmation is seen as a mature statement of faith by an already baptized person. Several Adults will be confirmed or received into membership this Sunday, November 17. We welcome them into the St. Philip’s family. About Bishop Allison Bishop Allison is certainly no stranger to St. Philip's, having preached and presided over the Rite of Confirmation a number of times in recent years. He is a noted theological author and is known for his stand against the rise of moralism in the church and the necessity for the grace of God through the imputed righteousness sinners receive through the reconciling self sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He resides in Georgetown, South Carolina with his wife, Martha. Allison was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended the University of the South and, after having his studies briefly interrupted by service in the United States Army during World War II after which he was discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant, he received a bachelor of arts degree in 1949. He then studied at Virginia Theological Seminary, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1952. He was ordained deacon in June 1952 and priest in May 1953. Allison later studied at Oxford University and received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1956. He then taught church history at the School of Theology at the University of the South and at Virginia Theological Seminary. He served as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in New York City before being elected as a Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina. He began service as co-adjutor of the Diocese of South Carolina in 1978, becoming the twelfth bishop in 1980. Allison retired in 1990 but has continued preaching, speaking, and writing since his retirement. Among his books are The Rise of Moralism: The Proclamation of the Gospel from Hooker to Baxter (New York: The Seabury Press, 1966); The Cruelty of Heresy: An Affirmation of Christian Orthodoxy (Harrisburg, PA: Morehouse, 1994); "Guilt, Anger, and God: The Patterns of Our Discontents" (New York: The Seabury Press, 1972); "Fear, Love, and Worship" (published prior to 1972). His most recent book, Trust in an Age of Arrogance, was released in 2009. Allison's books argue strongly for Christian orthodoxy, and specifically for Christian pastors and teachers to be focused upon grace and justification by faith alone as the key doctrines of the Christian Church.

Confirmation This Sunday

Guest Preacher: The Right Reverend C. Fitzsimons Allison

Retired Bishop of the Diocese of South Carolina

Confirmation is a rite of initiation in the Anglican

tradition, carried out through anointing, the laying on of hands, and prayer, for the purpose of bestowing the Gift of the Holy Spirit.

He

resides in Georgetown, South Carolina with his wife, Martha. Allison was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended the University of the South and, after having his studies briefly interrupted by service in the United States Army during World War II after which he was

discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant, he received a bachelor of arts degree in 1949. He then studied at Virginia Theological Seminary, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1952. He was ordained deacon in June 1952 and priest in May 1953. He began service as co-adjutor of the Diocese of South Carolina in 1978, becoming the twelfth bishop in 1980. Announcing the 2014

Honduras Medical Mission Trip:

Is it YOUR time to go? We’ve all heard the old saying, “If you wait for the perfect time in your life to have a baby, you’ll never have a baby!” It’s the same for going on the Honduran Medical Mission. If you wait for the perfect time to go, you’ll never go. Which means you would miss seeing the light of St. Philip’s shine in a dark and needy place…..AND you would miss the blessing of seeing the miracles the team witnesses each year. If you think this might be an almost perfect time for you, or maybe even a good enough time for you, sign up for the January 18-26, 2014, trip. Call Ken or Pat Holden for details at 216-5516.

IMPORTANT

In order to help us more effectively prepare our 2014 Budget, we

need to hear from more households about their giving intentions

by returning their pledge card. Last year only 42% of the 572

families that gave turned in a pledge card.
