The events of the past ten days have been overwhelming: the senseless death of a black man in south Minneapolis and days of peaceful protests, violent looting and arson, and forceful efforts to reestablish public order and peace. How do we begin to make sense of or understand what is happening?

It seems like the most effective first step is to listen to the stories of those who have been affected so strongly by this experience of injustice and the many similar, and even worse, experiences throughout our country’s history. This morning I listened to a story on the radio of a young black man (17 years old) who cannot go running in his own neighborhood; he has to run on a track or with other, preferably white, friends. Just one of many incidents that might help us to recognize the starkly different reality it is to grow up and live as a black person. Yes, we want to make sure that protests are peaceful and the lives and property of citizens are protected, but we can strive to hear what is being said in these troubling times. Some things need to change in our society: equality in education; law enforcement; financial services; housing; and medical care. As I was pondering these challenges, I came across this prayer that was used in a Catholic church in Minneapolis and it resonated deeply within me. Admitting our own prejudices and biases is necessary as we reach out to God and our neighbors.

Wake Me Up Lord

Wake me up Lord, so that the evil of racism finds no home within me.

Keep watch over my heart Lord, and remove from me any barriers to your grace,

that may oppress and offend my brothers and sisters. Fill my spirit Lord, so that I may give

services of justice and peace. Clear my mind Lord, and use it for your glory.

And finally, remind us Lord that you said, "blessed are the peacemakers,

for they shall be called children of God." Amen.

[This prayer is from For The Love of One Another (1989), a special message from the Bishops' Committee on Black Catholics of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops on the Occasion of the Tenth Anniversary of the Pastoral Letter, Brothers and Sisters to Us, the U.S. Catholic bishops' Pastoral Letter on Racism (1979). I was still a young priest at the time!]

Sincerely in Christ,

P.S. Thus far we have raised $25,800 for paving the SJW parking lot; if you are in a financial position to contribute, please help us out. The estimated cost is $62,150. Thank you!
