PCBC® Touts “Best of the Best” with Western & International Gold Nugget Winners

San Francisco, June 23—Noted architects, planners and developers gathered at

San Francisco’s Moscone Center last night to mark the 43rd annual celebration of the

Gold Nugget Awards and its recognition of the real estate world’s most distinguished

architectural and planning achievements. Highlighted by a multi-media presentation, the

2006 gala showcased the continuing architectural and planning influence of PCBC’s 14-

state Western region and such international arenas as China, Canada and Japan.

Celebrated at the annual PCBC trade show and conference, Gold Nugget Grand

and Merit Award Winners define the nation’s most renowned design and planning

competition. Chosen from Merit Award winners announced in May, Grand Award

honorees took center stage for a sellout crowd of some 1200 building industry

professionals. See www.goldnuggetawards.com for winners’ list, photos and follow-up

information.

“The Gold Nugget program sets a commendably high bar for the real estate

development world, as these winners so clearly demonstrate,” said Michael D. “Mick”

Pattinson of Barratt American Homes and President of PCBC. “They benchmark today’s

market and design trends and inspire all of us to improve homes, neighborhoods and

communities through design and planning excellence.”

The oldest and largest program of its kind in the United States, the Gold Nugget

competition honors creative achievement in architectural design and land use. This year’s

winners emerged in 53 categories covering residential, commercial, specialty, land

planning and rehabilitation projects.

The 2006 competition drew 677 entries, with stateside winners from Arizona,

California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada and Texas and international honorees

from Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand and Thailand. California’s size and diversity

was reflected in 32 Grand Awards and a Home of the Year designation. Projects from

Seattle and the Pacific Northwest took six Grands; Arizona, Colorado and Hawaii also

shared the Grand Award circle.

“We saw terrific solutions, whether for a grand custom home, a live/work loft,

specialty building, or the master plan for an entirely new community,” said Jenny

Sullivan, Gold Nugget judge and senior design editor for BUILDER magazine. “We

appreciated the thoughtful approaches architects are bringing to a spectrum of locales:

former military bases; small lot suburbs; urban infill parcels and commercial anchors.

Across the board, we found noteworthy sophistication, site sensitivity and architectural

authenticity.”

La Bellezza at Peregrine in Colorado Springs, Colorado, was named

Residential Project of the Year/Detached. Prado on Lake Avenue in Pasadena,

California was named Residential Project of the Year/Attached in an urban setting and

Las Palmas Viejas in Santa Barbara, California was best attached housing project

under eighteen units per acre. Woodbury in Irvine, California was named Master

Planned Community of the Year. Alta Plan A in Palm Springs, California, earned the

coveted Home of the Year designation, an award bestowed at the discretion of the judges.

City Tower in Tokyo was a dual Grand honoree, with wins for high-rise attached

housing and as an international entrant. Sheraton Pattaya Resort in Cholburi,

Thailand took a Grand in the commercial/retail category for international entrants. China

demonstrated its expanding design/development profile with Grands for the detached

homes of Forest Hills and Xiang Shan Mei Lu in Beijing; and for the attached San

Ramon Condominiums at Luxehills in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

Cypress in Victorville, California won the California Green Builder Award; this

award is co-sponsored by the California Building Industry Association. Stapleton in

Denver was named Sustainable/Green Residential Project of the Year, and California’s

Franchise Tax Board in Sacramento took a Grand for Sustainable/Green non-

Residential Project. Sponsored by Southern California Gas and San Diego Gas and

Electric, this category honors effective ways to design and build energy and resource-

conserving structures.

“Building Industry Community Spirit” Awards acknowledged builders,

developers, architects and non-profits partnering to improve conditions for the less

fortunate. “Spirit” Awards were bestowed for six shelter facilities in California, Colorado

and Washington and for three homes in Nevada and California created for the chosen

In addition to Jenny Sullivan, the 2006 judging panel included

builder/developers Matt Cody of Cachet Homes in Scottsdale, Arizona; Erika Geiser of

Christopher Homes in Las Vegas, Nevada; and Nick Lehnert of Distinguished Homes in

Anaheim Hills, California; Architects/planners serving as judges included Richard

Emsiek, AIA of McLarand Vasquez Emsiek & partners, Inc. of Irvine, California;

Patrick McBride of GMS Architectural Group in Bellevue, Washington; Rick New,

AIA of DTJ DESIGN, Inc. of Boulder, Colorado and Donal O’Callaghan MAIBC of S

& P Destination Properties in Vancouver, British Columbia. Peter Mayer and Lisa Parrish

of Peter M. Mayer Productions in Alta Loma, California served as Judging Chairs.

PCBC sponsors the Gold Nugget Awards. BUILDER magazine, the official

publication of the National Association of Home Builders, is the principal co-sponsor.

Circulating to more than 200,000 industry professionals, BUILDER covers the nation’s

building and development news, and will feature selected Gold Nugget winners with

color coverage in an upcoming issue. Regarded as the Academy Awards of the building

industry, the ceremonies have been produced since 1978 by Peter Mayer Productions.
