RANDOM THOUGHTS DIFERENTES PENSAMIENTOS from Father Bill Promesso Consecrated Religious On Sunday morning, Sr. Ann Kasparek, of the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix (smr) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of her vows. It seems like a good time to share some basic info on religious and consecrated life. Consider these sections found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. §915. Christ proposes the evangelical counsels, in their great variety, to every disciple. The perfection of charity, to which all the faithful are called, entails for those who freely follow the call to consecrated life the obligation of practicing chastity in celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom, poverty and obedience. It is the profession of these counsels, within a permanent state of life recognized by the Church, that characterizes the life consecrated to God. §916. The state of consecrated life is thus one way of experiencing a more intimateconsecration, rooted in Baptism and dedicated totally to God. In the consecrated life, Christs faithful, moved by the Holy Spirit, propose to follow Christ more nearly, to give themselves to God who is loved above all and, pursuing the perfection of charity in the service of the Kingdom, to signify and proclaim in the Church the glory of the world to come. §925. Religious life was born in the East during the first centuries of Christianity. Lived within institutes canonically erected by the Church, it is distinguished from other forms of consecrated life by its liturgical character, public profession of the evangelical counsels, fraternal life led in common, and witness given to the union of Christ with the Church. §926. Religious life derives from the mystery of the Church. It is a gift she has received from her Lord, a gift she offers as a stable way of life to the faithful called by God to profess the counsels. Thus, the Church can both show forth Christ and acknowledge herself to be the Savior's bride. Religious life in its various forms is called to signify the very charity of God in the language of our time. §927. All religious, whether exempt or not, take their place among the collaborators of the diocesan bishop in his pastoral duty. From the outset of the work of evangelization, the missionary "planting" and expansion of the Church require the presence of the religious life in all its forms. "History witnesses to the outstanding service rendered by religious families in the propagation of the faith and in the formation of new Churches: from the ancient monastic institutions to the medieval orders, all the way to the more recent congregations." Sr. Ann has been involved in many ministries during her 50 years, including several of them serving as co- director of Christian Service (along with Sr. Margaret Hoey) at St. Cyprian. Today, she remains deeply involved in the work of our St. Vincent De Paul Society and worships with us on Sunday mornings usually in the company of Sr. Margaret and Sr. Martha. Its an honor to be able to celebrate this jubilee with her and the Sisters of Mary Reparatrix community and benefactors. Congratulations Sister Ann!

It seems like a good time to share some basic info on religious and consecrated life. Consider these sections found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.§915. Lived within institutes canonically erected by the Church, it is distinguished from other forms of consecrated life by its liturgical character, public profession of the evangelical counsels, fraternal life led in common, and witness given to the union of Christ with the Church.

ST. CYPRIAN PARISH PAGE 2 RIVERVIEW, MICHIGAN

from our

Pastoral MinisterThis weekend the Gospel passage we hear comes from St. Luke who features women in more stories than any of the four gospel writers. Luke also consistently pairs the woman with a man and we see that also reflected this weekend as we hear about Simeon, a prophet, and Anna, a prophetess. These two prominent figures appear as a bookend to the story of Jesus and His infancy and highlight the gift and importance prophecy has been in the revelation of God’s plan of salvation for His people. Simeon and Anna speak about the child Jesus to all who were awaiting the restoration of God’s rule in Israel, which has been fulfilled through the birth of Jesus Christ as the Messianic Redeemer.

In this Gospel passage Luke is sure to highlight the importance of prayer in the lives of Simeon and Anna as being foundational in their lives and the basis for their relationship with God and their graced and anointed hearts being receptive to the Word of God. Both Simeon and Anna are immersed in a life of prayer that is intercessory in nature and possess a key grace necessary for prayer – a listening and attentive heart which allows them to receive the prophetic words of God. If you are attentive as you’re listening to the Gospel passage, you will notice that the Holy Spirit is also cited specifically numerous times throughout this passage by Luke. In verses 25-27 he states “Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord. He came in the Spiritinto the temple…” We also hear a confirming description of Anna as Luke describes her clearly stating “There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer.” It is obvious from both of their expressions of joy that Simeon and Anna have waited patiently and longed deeply for this moment to arrive, having trusted that the words of God that were revealed to them would be fulfilled.

What exactly is the gift of prophecy and it’s importance in the Church then and still today?“Prophecy is a supernatural communication from God to an individual or a group of believers. It is an anointing given as the Spirit wills to anyone open to bringing forth a gift in love to their brothers and sisters in Christ to promote the spiritual growth and

development of the body of believers. Prophecy builds up, encourages (this could include warnings), exhorts and consoles draws us closer to God in worship, and stirs up a response in God’s people such as joy, freedom, peace, tranquility, excitement, enthusiasm, a willingness to give all to the Lord, and gives us guidance in our daily walk. It always brings glory to Jesus. “…even if a prophecy corrects or calls one to forgiveness, this is a positive message from the Lord for the up-building of the community or person." (DeGrandis, The Gift of Prophecy, p.31) Prophecy is forth-telling of the mind and heart of God to His people. Prophecy can manifest through a vision, words, and thoughts or be prompted by a form of physical sensation to alert us to listen. A person yielding to this gift must listen and expect that God will speak, and always yield to the authority and order of the event and yield to the authority/body for discernment. It is necessary to discern the message that is spoken, not necessarily to accept everything that is said as ‘gospel-truth’. Prophecy should always be discerned and tested by the body of believers present. Prophecy is not an ability given to someone to prophesy at will, but rather a definite message given at a particular time by the Spirit for a distinct purpose. Not all who prophesy are prophets (cf. 1 Cor 14:31). A prophet is a person who consistently over time expresses prophetic words which are powerful and which elicit a response from many in the group.” - Excerpt taken from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette, January 23, 2020, https://diolaf.org/gifts-and-charisms

You can sign-up online or in the gathering space before and after all masses the weekend of February 16/17 & 22/23.

If you would like to sign up online, the Red Cross offers RapidPass. RapidPass allows you to start the blood donation process from the comfort of your home and save time at the donation site. The process is simple, just visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass, read the information and complete the questions online, then print your RapidPass and bring it with you or show it on your mobile device. This way you don’t have to read the booklet and answer the questions at the donation site, so the process can flow more smoothly. The RapidPass must be done the day of the drive. By sacrificing our own blood, we can bring new life to others.

Strangers No Longer Throughout many of the dioceses in the United States the plight of the immigrant has become a priority. As Pope Francis has indicated: “We cannot remain insensitive, our hearts deadened before the misery of so many innocent people. We must not fail to weep. We must not fail to respond.” Pope Francis was speaking of the situation of migrants worldwide including the situation of migrants in the United States. Strangers No Longer (SNL) Circles of Support are a concrete response to the plea of Pope Francis. In the Archdiocese of Detroit several parishes have embraced the ministry of becoming a Circle of Support. Three ways SNL Circles assist immigrants are education, direct support/accompaniment and advocacy. In a previous article we said that we would share what we, as St. Cyprian parishioners, can do to assist immigrants in our area.

Book Club The new date for Book Club is February 27 at 1:30pm in the Hospitality room we will be discussing The good neighbor: the life and work of Fred Rogers by King, Maxwell. Fred Rogers (1928-2003) was an enormously influential figure in the history of television

and in the lives of tens of millions of children. As the creator and star of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, he was a champion of compassion, equality, and kindness. Rogers was fiercely devoted to children and to taking their fears, concerns, and questions about the world seriously. The Good Neighbor, the first full-length biography of Fred Rogers, tells the story of this utterly unique and enduring American icon. Drawing on original interviews, oral histories, and archival documents, Maxwell King traces Rogers's personal, professional, and artistic life through decades of work, including a surprising decision to walk away from the show to make television for adults, only to return to the neighborhood with increasingly sophisticated episodes, written in collaboration with experts on childhood development. An engaging story, rich in detail, The Good Neighbor is the definitive portrait of a beloved figure, cherished by multiple generations. (the Library Network)

We’re beginning a weekly series called "Share What You Know. Stop Scams." from the Federal Trade Commission. We are sharing this information to help you be a good steward of your own resources. Since we are beginning tax season, we'll start with IRS Imposter Scams. Chances are good that someone you know has been scammed. They may not talk about it, but the statistics do. The truth is that sharing what you know can help protect someone who you know from a scam. Call the FTC to report scams at 1-877-382-4357, or go online at ftc.gov/complaint. ftc.gov/PassItOn Denise Traeder Director of Finance & Administration

IRS Imposter Scams

Here’s how they work: You get a call from someone who says she’s from the IRS. She says that you owe back taxes. She threatens to sue you, arrest or deport you, or revoke your license if you don’t pay right away. She tells you to put money on a prepaid debit card and give her the card numbers. The caller may know some of your Social Security number. And your caller ID might show a Washington, DC area code. But is it really the IRS calling? No. The real IRS won’t ask you to pay with prepaid debit cards or wire transfers. They also won’t ask for a credit card over the phone. And when the IRS first contacts you about unpaid taxes, they do it by mail, not by phone. And caller IDs can be faked. Here’s what you can do:

1.Stop. Don’t wire money or pay with a prepaid debit card. Once you send it, the money is gone. If you have tax questions, go to irs.gov or call the IRS at 800-829-1040.

2.Pass this information on to a friend. You may not have gotten one of these calls, but the chances are you know someone who has.

Stewardship Thoughts The Scripture readings today speak of God’s promise to send a Savior to mankind. The prophet Malachi compares God’s messenger to refined precious metals. In the Letter to the Hebrews, the author explains how Jesus came to help not angels, but the descendants of Abraham. In the long form of St. Luke’s Gospel, the evangelist tells the story of Mary and Joseph taking the baby Jesus to the Temple. In accordance with the law, He is consecrated to the Lord. Simeon, a holy man, and Anna, a prophetess, are in the presence of the infant Jesus and witness the fulfillment of the ancient prophecies. As Paschal stewards, we strive to build a personal relationship with Christ and, in turn, be docile to His will. May this feast day move us, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to embrace Christ and, in a spirit of evangelization, do His work in our acts of stewardship with our parish communion. To discern your gifts, take the St. Austin Spiritual Gifts Inventory at www.staustin.org/spiritual-gifts-inventory.
