President’s message

GRADUATES!Congratulations

From the management and staff of

o the Class of 2020, there may be no traditional graduation ceremonies

for you, but that does not mean your achievements as a student are

of less importance. All the more we need to celebrate your graduation

because you made it through two super typhoons, this ongoing

pandemic, and a lot more challenges that I could not count.

You put in the time, commitment, and hard work to graduate this

school year. You persevered through these trying times, attending

classes in makeshift classrooms and online. The positive mindset you

showed to continue your education in the face of difficult situations

says something about your drive to reach your goals.

Of course, all these were made possible by the unwavering support

of your family, especially your parents, whose faith in you and in what

you are capable of doing remains strong. You also have your dedicated

teachers and school personnel and officials to thank for. They have their

own challenges to confront, too, but they stayed true to what the CNMI

education system stands for, which is “Students First.”

What you accomplished through those tough years and the help you

received from the people around you are the reasons you are celebrating

one of the momentous occasions in your lives. Be proud and grateful.

Your achievements are no ordinary feats in these no ordinary times.

Congratulations, graduates. You’ve done a great job and time to

move on to the next one. Expect more bumps as you navigate your way

toward reaching another goal, but don’t be discouraged. Keep believing

in yourselves, don’t stop dreaming and working on your aspirations.

Success comes to those who never give up.

Jerry TanPresident and CEO of TanHoldings

No crowded venues. No photo-ops on stage. No presenta-tion of awards to the Top 10 honors. This

is the reality of the “new normal” in the CNMI and one of the many cher-ished traditions that have fallen by the wayside in the time of the CO-VID-19 pandemic are graduation ceremonies.

Each school in the CNMI was given the chance to use their creativ-ity to prepare an unorthodox gradu-ation ceremony for their graduates and promotees to honor their accom-plishments while still complying with the strict social distancing measures in place. Many of these schools got ideas from other schools worldwide that have also been hit by the CO-VID-19 pandemic but wanted to provide some sort of recognition for their graduating classes.

The most common “new normal” graduation was either virtual, mo-torcade, or drive-thru. Most schools combined all three to make the day as special as possible for their stu-dents because, according to the Pub-lic School System, it was the least they could do since these students’ lives were turned upside down and

they did not have the opportunity to end their high school careers like most seniors.

However, a number of schools like Mount Carmel School, Agape Chris-tian School, and Saipan International School still gave their graduates a feel of the traditional graduation with a few tweaks to abide with social dis-tancing measures.

MCS, which held their gradua-tion last June 20, hosted a traditional commencement ceremony for their graduates but limited the event to invitation-only. Each graduate was given four tickets for invited guests to limit the number of people within the Mount Carmel Cathedral.

However, for those friends and families who were not invited, MCS

also recorded the commencement ceremony and streamed it live via the internet so others could participate from home.

ACS also did a somewhat tradi-tional ceremony with some major tweaks. The graduates were still able to do the graduation march. They were also called one by one to receive their diplomas. And they were also together, as a class, to turn their tas-sels. However, parents, friends, and family members were not invited to the ceremony, just student and select teachers and staff. The ceremony was live-streamed over the internet and each student was given the opportu-nity to stand in front of the camera for their parents to see them as they turned their tassels.

SIS held their commencement ceremony traditionally, but in two batches in order to abide with social distancing laws. In addition, the cer-emonies were held outside for added safety. Following that, both batches went on a motorcade around the is-land as one group.

GCA hosted the first drive-thru graduation and motorcade. GCA had each student park their vehicles around the school’s campus and had them wait in their cars until their names were called. They then had to walk to a table placed at the center of the stage to pick up their diploma and awards and walk back to their vehicle. All speeches and remarks from their teachers, staff, and class valedictorian and salutatorian were pre-recorded and sent to each student. GCA’s cer-emony ended with a motorcade.

Eucon International School also held a drive-thru graduation like everyone else. Eucon, which usually holds a long traditional graduation within the walls of their auditorium, instead opted to host a quick drive-thru at their school parking lot where teachers handed out diplomas and awards followed by a short picture taking.

dents, then their middle school and high school students back in June, and a drive-thru graduation in May for their college graduates.

All public schools had the same set up for this year’s graduations: awards, speeches, and addresses were com-piled virtually and given to the stu-dents while diplomas were given out drive-thru style.

Marianas High School hosted two separate events. The first one was a vir-tual ceremony to recognize awardees and their accomplishments. This event was held physically on campus with only a handful of students and their family members present. The second was held the following day with a mo-torcade. The motorcade concluded in a drive-thru diploma distribution.

Da’Ok Academy held a motorcade that ended with a drive-thru diplo-ma distribution at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan. Speeches from their teachers, staff, and the PSS adminis-tration were pre-recorded and given to the students.

Saipan Southern High School held a motorcade starting from the Susupe Civic Center to their campus where they received their diplomas drive-thru style. Along with their diplomas, students also received their awards, a flash drive that had all the pre-re-corded speeches from teachers, staff and PSS administration, a class video, and a video of the awardees.

Kagman High School held an ex-tensive motorcade that went com-pletely around the island. The actual ceremony, which included speeches and acknowledgement of awardees, was uploaded to Facebook.

Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Jr./Sr. High School and the Tinian Jr./Sr. High School held similar commencement ceremonies. They both held a motor-cade for their students that drove up to their respective campuses where their awards and diplomas were handed to them.

The Northern Marianas College postponed its graduation ceremony until December 2020; however, the college still opted to pay trib-ute to over 200 graduates and their achievement in various online and traditional platforms and a virtual commemoration.

It awarded associate degrees in Business, Liberal Arts, Business Ad-ministration (Account, Business Management or Computer Applica-tions Emphasis), Criminal Justice, Hospitality Management, Natural Resource Management, and Nursing. The bachelor degrees awarded were in Business Management (or business management with accounting con-centration), and in Education (with emphasis in Early Childhood Educa-tion, Elementary Education, Rehabili-tation and Human Services, or Special Education). (With Justine Nauta)
