Friday 16 March 2018 Congratulations to Jeremy on winning the RCSU 2018 Science Challenge, a national science communication competition run by Imperial College London. The annual challenge is split into categories for essays, articles, creative writing, and video clips, testing the skills of the large numbers of Year 12 entrants in scientific debate, reasoning, and communicating complex ideas to a general audience. Jeremy’s essay, ‘How do relatively small shifts, rifts and changes lead to a long lasting effect on our planet’s climate?’ was awarded not only the essay prize but also the overall prize – a very impressive achievement. RCB JEREMY WRITES ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE: I was invited to the House of Lords to attend the annual Royal College of Science Union Science Challenge Final. There I met figures of all kinds, from fellow sixth-formers to Imperial College students, to university professors and even the Lord Robert Winston. After a wonderful dinner overlooking the Thames, I was honoured to win the title of overall schools winner for my essay on the Earth’s changing climate over geological time. But beyond prizes, it was truly enlightening to discuss matters of science and education with those attending. Year 6 and Year 8 pupils recently took part in the World Maths Day competition. They battled against their peers, as well as other pupils from around the world who were playing at the same time (such as Malaysia, Japan, Dubai, China, New Zealand and even Hawaii). Our math- ematicians had to play 20 games, testing their mental arithmetic, to be completed during the 48-hour competition period to qualify. We are awaiting results but there will be school prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed students in each year group. ADP Congratulations Jeremy World Maths Day Competition

JEREMY WRITES ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE: I was invited to the House of Lords to attend the annual Royal College of Science Union Science Challenge Final.

Our math-ematicians had to play 20 games, testing their mental arithmetic, to be completed during the 48-hour competition period to qualify. During their life skills session last week, lower sixth students learned more about the world of financial planning when Discover Fortunes came to school. Pupils were split into teams and played an interactive game where the aim was to correctly advise fictitious characters how to invest their money. It was an engaging and challenging session, equipping them with financial knowledge and developing valuable problem solving skills. Teams competed to win two prizes but all pupils left the session having learnt the importance of working strategically with others and more about the world of finance. Next week, Investment Quorum company director and Emanuel parent, Petronella West, will be coming to speak to the year group about managing their own finances. HCW

Last week Ice spent time working with children and teachers from Garden House School. She helped with workshops and preparing the stage before leading the children in an amazing piece of music performed in front of 800 people at Cadogan Hall. The children really looked up to Ice and the teachers said she was a credit to Emanuel. Everyone was very impressed with her maturity and the kindness she showed to the younger pupils. She even got an invitation to the after show party with all the professional musicians. Well done, Ice.

Channel 4 puzzled viewers with a primetime TV ad starring OE Tallulah Haddon (2007-14) promoting a tech innovation called AzanaBand, claiming to be “the world’s first sensory gaming device” stimulating fear, pain and happiness. The promo was actually part of a marketing campaign for new thriller Kiss Me First, which tells the story of a lonely teenage girl who is addicted to a fictional online gaming site and whose characters escape everyday life through virtual reality to a world called Azana.

BY ARONSeveral students from Years 8 to 10 recently took part in a Latin and Greek speaking competition at Queen’s College School, Harley Street. Each student delivered a short text in their chosen language and were then judged on pronunciation and delivery. The competition was fierce but

Emanuel managed to obtain Bronze awards in three categories – Beginner’s Latin (Year 8); Beginner’s Greek (Year 9); and pre-GCSE Latin (Year 10). This is the first time that Emanuel has entered the competition and due to the strong outcome we will most likely enter next year with more students.

The Retro Video Game Club for Year 8 pupils has taken off in full force. So far we've played nothing from the 21st century, reaching as far back as the early and mid-1980s for such classics as Mega Man, Kirby's Adventure, Tetris and Dr Mario. Game on!

Latin and Greek update RESULT: EMANUEL 9 SUTTON GRAMMAR 3We scored our third consecutive victory with an easy 9-3 victory over an under-strength Sutton Grammar School, who fielded four players instead of the required six. This meant we were 4-0 ahead by default before the match started, however we still won 5-3 on the matches played. Ultimately though, we would rather have played the matches, as we had seven players raring to go and had to disappoint them by restricting four of the team to one match instead of the normal two. Our top players Eash and Luke won both their matches, securing us four points in matches of high quality, with all our remaining players only playing one game. Charlie, our Year 7 chess sensation, picked up another quick-fire victory and an out of sorts Enzo lost after a fine run of victories. When we rotated our team both Tom and a very rusty Pietro were also defeated. We have two remaining league fixtures, a double header against the dangerous George Abbott which are traditionally very close affairs. Also, before Easter, we hold the second of our Blitz competitions, which have lots of cash prizes and we hope will attract lots of casual chess players who might be looking to take the game more seriously. There is a poster elsewhere in this Newsletter. TRJ

SPORTHockeyU13: ST THOMAS’ TOURNAMENTv ST THOMAS’ CLAPHAM B 0-0v ALLEYN’S 0-0v ST THOMAS BATTERSEA 1-1v HARRIODIAN 1-0 (LOST)Last Saturday (10 March) the Under 13A team went to Battersea Park to play in the St Thomas’ Battersea tournament. We were in a group of five along with Harrodian School, Thomas’s Clapham B, Alleyn’s School and Thomas’s Battersea. The games were eight minutes long and if it came down to it short corners counted against the opposition. Our first game was against Alleyn’s and we drew 0-0. Lucy as our goalkeeper defended some tough short corners and, although we were unable to get into their D that much, we kept them at bay. Then after watching our opposition play we played against Thomas’s Clapham B team where after eight minutes the score was 1-1 with Ella scoring our goal. Our penultimate match was against Thomas’s Battersea where the score was also a draw 0-0. Our last match was against Harrodian, where the score was 0-0 until the whistle. But as the whistle blew we conceded a short corner meaning we had to play it out. Unfortunately, we were unable to hold the score and the opposition scored so we lost 0-1. It was a good result only as we lost one game.

U12: THOMAS’S TOURNAMENTFINAL SCORE: FOURTH PLACE BY MEGWe were all fired up hoping to return with a great result. Throughout the tournament we worked together to play our best and push ourselves through the competition. During the games, there was great play up front between Fleur, Lily, Evie, Lucy and Isabella. Evie worked hard and deserved her spot on the team. With great play we managed to beat rivals Harrodian, and only lost to Thomas’s by one. We also beat Newton and Alleyns. With these results we came first in our

U12: EPSOM TOURNAMENTFINAL POSITION: THIRDBY MEGAlthough a rather small tournament, placing third is a good achievement considering schools like Epsom and Thomas’s Clapham were competing. Throughout the contest Anna made some amazing saves to

U14A V GODOLPHIN AND LATYMERFINAL SCORE: 1-1BY SCARLETTIt was good game, especially considering we didn’t have some of our key players. Lola did an excellent job up front and scored a great goal. Issy did very well at getting the ball down the pitch, passing to Izzie and Rosie. We played well and Lola was deservedly player of the match.

U12B v GODOLPHIN AND LATYMER CFINAL SCORE 4-1(WON)BY JEMIMAWe started well with Prudie scoring an amazing goal in the opening minutes. Charlie, Elizabeth, Sophie and Jessica did great, making sure to get the ball as far as possible from the D. Martha made some good saves, conceding only one goal. Scarlett, Frankie made some great moves, with Evie, Pia and Alice quickly scoring goals. Player of the match was Jemima as she constantly took on players down the wing and finished the match with three assists. We are very happy that we finished the season with a strong win and are looking forward to next season.

pool to reach the semi-finals. Pumped and ready, the semi was against Thomas’s Clapham, a strong and competitive team. We lost 1-0, however we did not let it get to us as we went on to play Broomwood in the third place playoff. We lost 4-1. We were playing against teams that have been playing together for years. Our team however, has only been playing together for a single term. We have improved a lot since our first match against Highgate and intend to improve even further. Netball

U12A: SURREY FINALSBY LILYOur first match was against Putney, which we were all eager to win as we had previously lost to them by a narrow margin. With persistent wind and Putney being a strong team, our play wasn’t as good as we'd hoped for, leading us to lose the game 7-0. We played seven matches, Wallington was our closest match only losing by two goals. The toughest team that we played against was Epsom. We got off to a great start, both teams scoring but after half time they scored many goals as they improved their game. In the end they won a well fought match 7-3. Going into our last match against Cranleigh, we were insistent on winning and to reach our aim of three goals. Through determination we managed to win the game 5-4. Fleur (GD) made some excellent interceptions, doing her best to keep us in the game. Frankie (GS) played very well, scoring goals against very skilful players. Although we expected a better outcome coming into the games we are very proud to have been there and have learnt a lot from the experienced teams that we played.

keep us in contention. Anna had a passionate attitude with a lot of vocal communication to help keep control of the pitch. Lucy and Francesca scored some great goals. We played well as a team and used the wings and crosses to allow us to push up. Throughout we stayed calm and had fun, with great skills and play.
