Eight Governor Visits, 5 Zone Chair Meetings 4 days at MD5 Convention in Mahnomen which included my
last Council of Governors Meeting. SOOO fun to visit with SOOO many Lions! Thank you all for your
hospitality and generosity.
The Council of Governors have been addressing security issues pertaining to the directories we use for infor-
mation in our District 5M9 as well as the information in the Multiple Directory. The Multiple Directory
access on line is taken down temporarily. I will share changes as they happen and I would suggest for now
you hold on to last year’s copies.
The Multiple Convention at Mahnomen was a success with 418 members in attendance. Thank You Vergas
Lions for hosting this event. The 2020 convention will be held in Rochester.
Executive District Secretary Past District Margaret Van Erp was presented with a Hall of Fame Award and
presented to her by 1st international Vice President Dr. Jung-Yul Choi. The Van Erp family were in attendance
to share in the honor. Thank You Lion Margaret for all you do for us.
Our 5M9 district received a trophy for 2nd Quarter Plus net members with total of +13. Congratulations to our
clubs for your new members and I hope you will continue to grow your
membership and retain the ones your have. You make me proud to be
your Governor!
And so, as I am out of words (really?) and out of page space, think
about this:

Welcome Spring! We finally have been experiencing some true spring weather and it feels so good. I have loved opening the windows in the morning and listening to the birds sing. RLLI is over and the feedback I have received has been very positive. If you have not at-tended yet, make plans to do so. It will be back in 2 years and it has so much to offer you in terms of your professional and personal life, it is well worth your time. It is not just about Lions. It has to do with your whole presence and approach to others. MD5M Multiple Convention is in the books for 2019. I hope everyone enjoyed it. I had a good time and got a new hairstyle while there; all for a great cause. Zone meetings are coming to an end for spring, and they were all fun, informative, and dinners were deli-cious. If you are in one of the Zones having a meeting in May, make sure you attend. So much information is shared. Speaking of sharing information, it's time for new officers to get ready for their term to start in July. Return-ing officers can update and refresh what they know and what is new - AND IT'S A LOT. Soooo we have College of Leadership or "Everything You Wanted To Know About Lions in a Nutshell" coming up in May. See dates elsewhere in this newsletter. Secretaries and Zone Chairs will have their class in June on the 22nd. Zone Chairs and Secretaries have very important roles to fill and a lot of new information to learn. Please make every effort to attend a special session just for you. All of these classes are free! Can't beat that deal. My last note for the month - it's never too early to make reservations for Mid-Winter Conventi0n 2020. The "focus" will be vision. "Looking Towards the Future with 20/20 Vision". You can find registration forms for the convention and Cragun’s Resort in this newsletter. If your club or business would like to place an ad in the conventi0n hospitality book, contact Denny Ganz at 218-244-4232, Cora Hohnstadt at 815-762-1238, or Art Schmidt at 218-587-4566. They can help you with the size and cost of the ads. Hope to see all of you there January 3rd-5th, 2020. That's it for May. Remember our fallen veteran's, who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we could live free-and serve others. Yours in Lionism DGE Cassandra Remington

Welcome Lions of 5M9!
On March 28 thru 31 our district had ten lion members and three faculty at the MD5M Regional Lions
Leadership Institute in Mahnomen. Our Multiple district 5M includes Minnesota, Manitoba, and Northwest
Ontario.
There were around sixty-two lions students and twelve faculty that were in four different groups. Plus we
had two from South Dakota District. During our weekend we learned about 11 different leaderships skills
from communication to local issues, motivation, working team building and public speaking just naming a
few. On Saturday we had our Banquet. The speaker was our own 5m9 PID Bruce Beck who talked about
leadership and how to be a superhero also about being a good lions ambassador in our district and the
world.
If you get a chance or want to the Leadership Institute is in two years, it will be in St. Cloud You will learn
more about lions and yourself. The classes will help you during your life experiences in lions and your per-
sonal life as well. I am grateful I went and have increased my new lions family.
It was awesome awesome awesome !
Our Lions family is growing, which is wonderful news. But what will happen come June 30th? Will many
of our members be leaving for various reasons? Maybe their voice was not heard. Maybe they did not feel
welcome. Maybe they did not understand what Lions was all about. It is not just service to our community,
it is also supporting our wonderful Lions projects as well.
It is so important to listen to new ideas, maybe it won’t work, but without trying we will never know. Every
member is in Lions for various reasons. Some want to serve their community needs. Others want to be-
come more active in their club or even move further on. Have we given them the proper tools to pursue
their goals? Our GAT team is wonderful. They are there to help the clubs grow, retain and work on service
projects. Where else can one find such willing and dedicated people to help and advise then in Lions.
Our motto is “We Serve” and we can really do this as active clubs.

What is a Zone Meeting?
Often considered the most important meeting for club officers, the District zone meeting, gives club presidents, club first vice presidents and secretaries or anyone that wants to attend the chance to learn about the programs and initiatives of the district, multiple district and LCI.
However, by far the most valuable element of these meetings is the opportunity for those attending to simply exchange ideas and challenges with other clubs. The meetings generally focus on the implementation of service projects, club management, membership growth and leadership development. While the main objective is to provide club officers a forum for discussion, the meeting also provides the zone chairperson the opportunity to gather recommendations that can be shared with the DG Team. Information learned at a zone meeting can then be shared with their club.

Lions are dedicated to service. Our motto, “we serve,” says it all. Each new member impacts the lives of 70 people annually, so the more we invite the more we can serve. Below are 11 recruitment resources your club can use to help invite for impact this October. From webinars to bro-chures, we have a variety of assets to help you get started! 1. Just Ask! Imagine if every Lion asked just 1 person to join their club – think of how many people we could serve. All it takes is asking one family member, friend or neighbor. Download the Just Ask Guide today and see helpful tips to ask one! 2. Engage through Service Lions around the world are preparing for our Worldwide Week of Service on October 10-16. Host a project in your community that addresses visual impairments, such as a vision screening. Be sure to have flyers, membership appli-cations and brochures available for community members to learn more about Lions Clubs International.
3. Host a Membership Drive PCC Ron Seybold recently told webinar listeners all about how his multiple district conducts membership drives. Listen to the whole webinar here, and find the resources he found useful below: Prospect List, Sample Invitation Letter, Proposed Agenda, Membership drive checklist
4. Review the “Ohio Plan” Read our blog post about the Tri-Village Lions Club (13-F Ohio), and see how they grew their club by 60% and de-creased the average member age by 15 years. If you want to learn even more about the Tri-Village Lions Clubs and hear specific examples of how they grew membership, listen to our webinar, “5 Ways to Boost Member Satisfaction”
5. Keep Members Happy The Tri-Village Lions Club didn’t just gain members by asking new members, they also kept the members they had happy. Everyone has a different reason for joining a club; make sure you’re nurturing your members. Review our Membership Satisfaction guide for more information. 6. Create a Campaign of “100 Reasons to be a Lion” When you’ve talked to your members using the Membership Satisfaction guide and learned why they became a Lion, consider creating a list (as suggested in our Ways to Celebrate flyer) of 100 reasons to become a Lion. Share the list on your club webpage and social media. Here are a few reasons to become a Lion: Help impact lives all over the world, Make an impact on your community, Meet new friends (and maybe your future spouse!)
7. Utilize Social Media Let everyone know the great things your club has been up to by using social media to your advantage. Listen to the webinar put on by SMiLE and LCI’s marketing team to learn more, or view the infographic for a quick guide on how to increase your clubs social media engagement.
8. Utilize Traditional Media Social media isn’t the only way to get your club noticed. When you’re hosting and event, or celebrating the success of another impactful event, consider publicizing in your local paper. Download our half-page ad to get started. 9. Apply for a Membership Development Grant Target marketing initiatives that focus on new areas of opportunity and utilize new marketing techniques to start new clubs and grow membership. Lions Clubs International offers Membership Development Grant opportunities to clubs all over the world. 10. Remember the Value of One One new member can make a big difference. Listen to the marketing team’s webinar, “The Value of One” to hear how Lions are recruiting in their communities.
