Principal’s Message Welcome to ‘Performance Week’ and the final week of Term 3. This section today is dedicated to the most important information that you will need to know in the lead up to Thursday Night’s performance. Please take the time to read it carefully. Arrival: Students are asked to arrive at the Griffith Duncan Theatre (GDT) between 5:45- 6:00pm on Thursday evening. All students will need to get their name marked off on the upper level of the GDT entrance and then they will be directed to the student seating area on the upper mezzanine floor. Aboriginal dancers, drama, 2 Blue, 5/6 Ruby and 5/6 Jade will need to have their name marked off early so that they can head backstage and prepare for the opening segment of the concert. Parking: The University of Newcastle is a restricted parking area and all vehicles must comply with parking rules and regulations. Parking on campus is FREE after 5:00pm. The closest and best place to park is in the P6 car parking area located at E18 or E15 (see map further on). Costumes Students are to arrive in costume with hair and make-up ready (if needed for your class item). Drama students, senior and junior dance members as well as the Aboriginal dancers opening the show will need to bring their additional costume in a bag, labelled with their name on it. They will be able to get changed in rooms backstage during the performance. Parent Seating Tickets have been distributed today via the students. Seat allocations were conducted by drawing names out of a hat. It is critical that all families sit in the seats allocated to them on their tickets. There will be ushers on the night to assist you in finding your way to the correct seats. All parents are asked to be seated by approximately 6:25pm so that we can start on time. It is expected that the performance will run for approximately 2 hours. Programs will be issued for free when you arrive. Griffith Duncan Theatre The Griffith Duncan Theatre is a university lecture theatre. No food or drink can be taken into the auditorium. Whilst we encourage parents with younger siblings to make alternative care arrangements, parents with children under 3, may have them sit on their lap during the performance. We just ask that if your child becomes noisy or unsettled that you respect other audience members by settling them at the rear of the auditorium or outside as needed. If you are bringing a pram to the theatre, please do not park it in the aisle as this will restrict access in and around the seating. Prams can be left at the rear of the auditorium along the back wall. Term 3, Week 10 Tuesday 20 th September 2016 Congratulations Students of the Week! Photography Parents are reminded that due to copyright restrictions and having students for whom we do not have permission to publish, photography and videoing of the performance is prohibited. P&C Hundreds Club To contribute to their ongoing fundraising efforts, P&C will run several 100’s club raffles. Tickets will be on sale before the performance for $2 per number. This will be drawn onstage by the P&C at the conclusion of the performance. Student Collection Students must be signed out at the conclusion of the performance. There will be instructions from the stage at the end of the performance about how and where to collect your children. Because there is a large volume of people that will want to exit at the same time, we are going to do this in a staggered way. Please wait until you are asked to move before exiting the theatre. Your patience and assistance with this, is very much appreciated. All the hard work has been done, now it is time to sit back, relax and enjoy the incredible talent of our students on display. I look forward to seeing you there. David Holland Principal

Home Reading Update!

We are almost at our first whole school goal of reading 20000 nights. After approximately 30 weeks of reading, as a school we have read 18980 nights. Number of students reading: 40 nights – 176 80 nights – 123 120 nights – 72 160 nights – 29 200 nights – 6 Can children benefit from reading during the holidays (and weekends)? Our answer is YES. It’s great to use every opportunity available to help children develop the habit of reading. Supporting reading development over the holidays (and weekends) can be done in ways that tap into children's own interests and imaginations. I have been encouraging students to borrow and read or engage in literacy over the holidays. Newcastle Regional library has some awesome holiday activities such as Stories Alive, Roald Dahl’s Storytime; JD’s World of Magic; Lego Masters Building Challenges; and more. You can find out more about each activity on their website http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/Library/What-s-On Have a fantastic holiday and remember to record your reading in your reading journals, Happy Reading. A Big Thank You from the SRC

As you are aware the SRC has been leading a food collection for the

Soul Café. Thanks to your overwhelming generosity we have boxes

of food to deliver to the café this Friday. Your donations will be

added to the Soul Café pantry and used to help feed the many

homeless people living in Newcastle. I am sure Soul Café will

greatly appreciate your donations.

If you can still contribute, it is not too late, as students can bring in food

until Thursday. We need tinned food, pasta, milo, tea, coffee or serviettes.

Thanks again for supporting the SRC (in conjunction with Soul Café) in their food collection.

The SRC

Out of Uniform Friday

As a thank you for donating food we are going to have an out of uniform day this Friday. Given the homeless

spend cold nights on the streets; we are allowing students to wear their pyjamas or onesies to school.

SRC members will need to wear their school uniform to Soul Café but can change into their PJ’s once back at

school. NO gold coin is required. As students will have sport on Friday we do ask that they wear their sport

shoes. I know this might be a strange look but it is for their safety.

Once again, thank you parents for your generous support.

School Values - Integrity Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest, having strong moral principles and a willingness to do what is right. At Cardiff South PS this is one of the values which we are trying to instil in each child during their time at our great school. By building up a student’s integrity and teaching them the best choices to make even when no-one is watching helps to make them valuable members of our school and society in general. Pictured below is a Wordle displayed in all classrooms at Cardiff South showing key aspects of what we believe to be integrity.

For more information about the definition of integrity and how you can assist in instilling this important value in your child check out the following links: http://www.markmerrill.com/how-to-teach-integrity-to-your-kids/ http://familymatters.net/blog/2012/06/25/10-ways-to-teach-your-children-integrity/
