July 2019
Congratulations to Bob Dodgson for being Inducted into the AMA
Hall of Fame! On June 8, 2019 Bob was officially inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame at the AMA District XI Jamboree at the Red Apple
Flyers flying field in Wenatchee, WA.
Bob shown here receiving the award from AMA President Rich Hanson.
For those attending this presentation, it was like Old Home Week, or a Reunion of past Dodgson Designs glider flyers. There were folks
from Oregon, Seattle, Southern California, Spokane (I probably missed a couple) there to celebrate Bob receiving the award. There was a
great turnout of well-wishers for Bob.
Here are some pictures from the jamboree.

Please note for those planning on camping Friday July 19th at the SASS 5th annual ALES contest at Carnation, the field will be
closed to camping on July 19th due to a Carnation Farm Evening event. No flying that day after 3 PM. Camping will be OK
for Saturday July 20th.

Dodgson Design Glider Flyers at the Jamboree (How many can you identify?)
Other stuff. Sandie and I, along with a large group of NWSS glider guiders and other out of state flyers made it
to Wenatchee for the 1st Annual AMA District XI Jamboree. It was special this year as Bob Dodgson of the
famous Dodgson Designs Gliders received the award from AMA for being inducted into the AMA Hall of
Fame. I know that many of us in the NWSS have built and flown Bob’s designs. Sandie and I had the 2-meter
Pixie, the Camino, the Windsong and later the Anthem, they were great flying gliders at that time. Bob, before
there was electronic programing of flight controls, came up with some unique mechanical design features that
we now do without a lot of thought, but then it was great to have “Crow” and “elevator/flap compensation” for
landing, to name a couple.
I have to say that the Red Apple Flyers there in Wenatchee have a great flying field, and the weather was good.
There was a lot of flying devoted to nitro and gas airplanes/Helicopters etc., but very little to gliders. The event
director, after Bob’s award, said that gliders could fly for the next hour. How nice of them. 😊
On the other side of the coin, for the first Jamboree, the folks at the Red Apple Flyers and other AMA District
XI members, did do a good job of putting it on.
Another reminder!!
Nominations for the Cliff Mink Service Award and NWSS Board of Directors are open. The Cliff Mink
Service Award is named after one of the founding fathers of the NWSS, Mr. Cliff Mink. This award is
presented annually to an individual(s) who has made a significant contribution promoting soaring in the
Northwest. The Cliff Mink Service award has been around the NWSS for several years and was 1st given to
Cliff at the 1985 tournament.
The three board members whose 3-year term is up this year are, Richard Van Dijk, Ken Eaton and Tom
Clumsee. The board term is for 3 years. So, if you would like to serve on the NWSS board or know someone
who would like to, please feel free to nominate yourself or the person for the NWSS board. If you nominate
someone, please make sure that that person is willing to serve. For the Cliff Mink Service Award and the
NWSS Board nominations please send you nomination to NWSS Secretary Art Boysen, email:
[email protected]. Thanks, this month to Rex Grace for Season Points update and his Cross-country Article
and Tom Culmsee for the historical PASS Thermal Search Flyer.

XC in Sacramento, CA By Rex Grace
Team “Two Centers”
Curtis Headrick, Kurt Scudder, Mike Cook, Rex Grace
The first IEQF XC Team, in my memory, was formed over the winter of 2018/19. Our initial aim
was to compete in the annual XC contest in Montague, CA. This is one of the only XC contests
on the west coast and the closest to us. However, in January that contest’s host of 20+ years
decided to cancel the event permanently. We were so bummed. We had a plane and most of a
team but no contest.
Then the Sacramento Valley Soaring Society (SVSS) announced that they would hold an XC
contest, to help fill the void, on May 4th & 5th, 2019
After some discussion our team decided to attend this event, so we continued our preparations.
The XC plane, SBXC, we had acquired last fall was modified and updated by Rex. The
telemetry gear was integrated and installed by Kurt. Curtis volunteered his truck for the chase
vehicle. He removed the canopy and added seats for the pilot and spotter. Lastly, we recruited a
driver, Mike Cook. Mike is new to RC in the last year, but he is learning rapidly and was
enthusiastic to help out.
By March we were ready to begin practicing with our SBXC plane weighing in at 10.75lb -
about 15oz/sq.ft. but the March weather was not cooperating. April finally brought us some
decent weather for flying and our first couple of flights went as expected with one mishap on a
sideways landing. A little more tweaking and tuning to get the plane flying like it should and we
were ready to run an XC course.
We scoped out a 6-mile course near Curtis’s house in Medical Lake, WA which is where we
attempted our first XC run. We struggled to gain enough altitude in the cool, spring weather but
we did manage to get to 1,000ft and out on course a few times. We were very excited and
managed to go several miles. Our telemetry gear was working but there was difficulty getting
the appropriate info to the pilot. When the vehicle is at 30MPH + it is very hard to hear anything
but the wind. Walkie-Talkies helped. A small karaoke speaker helped more. We were making
progress, but we needed more practice. However, time was up, and it was time to begin our road
trip.
David Portwood offered us the loan of a telemetry unit that is specifically made for these
competitions. So, on our way to Sacramento we swung by David’s house near Portland, got the
gear, hugged his wife, admired the view and sped on our way to sunny Sacramento.
We arrived in Dixon, CA, a small town near Sacramento, on Thursday early afternoon, quickly
checked in to our hotel and then headed to the field to practice. We installed and tested the new
telemetry gear, flew and re-trimmed the plane. It was flying very nicely, and the telemetry was
working. Now it was up to us to fly it around the course.
Friday was a practice day and good lift got us out on course pretty quickly. Next obstacle was a
tunnel of trees a qtr. mile long at the beginning of the course that is a real bugger to get through.
Too high it’s hard to see our plane and find it again on the other side. If you have ever lost sight
of your plane for 30 seconds at 1,000ft altitude then you know what anxiety we went through.
Too low into the tunnel and then we would enter the course too low and have to find additional
lift immediately. Our highest altitude was around 2,500ft. We went through the tunnel twice and
6
covered about 10 total miles on the 20-mile course in two flights. We really felt like we were
ready!
Lift was much harder on Saturday. We flew approx. 30 miles just on the field trying to get
enough altitude to negotiate the tree tunnel and get on course. We got to 1,500ft but we wanted
at least 2,000 to enter the course. We couldn’t get there, we kept trying, conditions changed and
then we couldn’t even get to 1000ft, S$%t!
On Sunday the lift was almost impossible. But we became more aggressive and pushed through
the tree tunnel and out on the course at about 750ft. This is low to start a course run but we
hoped to find some lift early. We did find lift but, in our urgency, to push on we flew through it.
We should have stayed with it as we landed out after about a mile on the course.
Our plane flew really well with no mishaps (carnage)👍🏻 We had the only SBXC plane. Other
teams had home built/modified TD planes that were a little smaller than the SBXC.
Consequently, they could be ballasted up to about 20oz/ft. We ended up 5th place out of 6 teams
and we had a great first XC experience.
We have thoughts of organizing an XC event maybe in the Tri-cities area is the near future if
there is interested pilots in the northwest. We are toying with the idea of incorporating FPV for
some fun flights. If you are interested in helping or forming a team please contact Kurt Scudder
([email protected]) or Curtis Headrick ([email protected]).
John Ellias’ (world XC distance record holder, center) Team took 1st. On Saturday they flew the
course 2 times around, 40 miles, in 1 hour and 50 min. He was flying a modified 4m Windy
Explorer at 120oz (I think).
