MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I cannot believe that my second year as your president is almost up. It has been a great pleasure and an honor serving the Foundation. A lot has been accomplished, and yet we still have a great need to raise money for many additional worthwhile projects. In this issue of the newsletter you will find articles on Dave Welch’s Ride for Rehab, as well as the results of the Rehab 5k Run/Walk & Roll in Chandler. Thank you to all who came out for that event; we plan to continue this fundraising/socializing event at both the AAP and AAPM&R annual meetings. Look inside for information on the first Ossur Prosthetic/Orthotic Research Grant Award winner. The Foundation welcomes and encourages applications for research grants. DAVE WELCH ON THE ROAD FOR REHAB As this newsletter goes to press, Dr. David Welch and his wife Mary have logged over 1,000 miles on their 2,200 mile Ride for Rehab. They’ve already faced both snow and 90 degree temperatures, climbs of over 7,000 vertical feet, as well as road closures that have sent them off their route. But they are determined to continue on their journey to support rehabilitation research. After taking a ferry to British Columbia, they will end their tour in Washington State on July 15. You can follow their progress and see photos at http://rideforrehab2011.blogspot.com/. Dr. Welch asks that you join him in supporting rehabilitation research by making a per-mile pledge or simply a donation to the Foundation in his name. Visit our secure online donation page at http://www.foundationforpmr.org/ NEW/donate.html. Along with the applications, we hope each of you will reach into your pockets and write a check to enable us to support future research projects. We will continue to work with the AAPM&R and AAP to facilitate the research needs of the population we serve. I expect to see everyone who can sign up and show up for the 5k in Orlando. Please bring your children and your checkbooks! NEW FORMAT: To give you the information you want in the most convenient format, we’re going to send the quarterly Founda- tion UPDATE newsletter in this format to give you immediate access to the informa- tion and still give you the opportunity to read the full text of articles that interest you by clicking through to this PDF. We welcome your feedback, comments and suggestions – please e-mail them to [email protected].

Dr. Thomas Strax (right), President of the Foundation for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, presented the 2011 Ossur Prosthetic / Orthotic Research Grant to Dr. Gopi Kasturi on Thursday, April 14, in Chandler, AZ. The award will be used to conduct a one-year pilot study on the use of lightweight spine braces in the treatment of osteoporotic fractures to help reduce pain, and increase mobility and participation in physical therapy. Dr. Kasturi will be examining the utility of a brace on bone density, pain, incident fractures and quality of life of his subject population. The study will be conducted at the VA Central California health care system and the Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) in Fresno with both veteran and civilian populations.

The award was presented during the plenary session of the Association of Academic Physiatrists, and is generously funded by an unrestricted gift from Ossur Americas. According to Hilmar Bragi Janussen, Vice President for Research and Development, “Together with the Foundation for PM&R, Ossur hopes to raise the standard in Orthotics and Prosthetics rehabilitation research.”
