Dear graduates: Never give in, never give upB

y month’s end, more 800 Hunt

County high school seniors will

have graduated, and more than

250 of them will already have college

credits under their belts, thanks to ever-

growing dual credit programs.

Many of these young people already

feel heavy on their shoulders the weight

of their futures and all the coming deci-

sions as they are bombarded by (often

conflicting) advice from parents, teach-

ers, school counselors, and famous busi-

nesspeople, politicians and entertainers.

While much advice for graduating

seniors tends to focus on inspiration and

hope, some highly regarded businesspeo-

ple, politicians and celebrities have of-

fered a more down-to-earth viewpoint—

acknowledging the unexpected twists and

turns that not only test a person as they

go through their life’s journey, but can

shape them and make them stronger as

well.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs

offered some down-to-earth

advice in a commencement

speech he gave at Stanford

University in 2005. In part

of the speech, Jobs related

a story about how he took

calligraphy classes as a

young man simply out of

personal curiosity, with-

out having any idea how it

would influence his life.“If I had never dropped out (from

Reed College),” Jobs said, “I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy

class, and personal computers might not

have the wonderful typography that they

do.”“You can’t connect the dots looking

forward,” he said. “You can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to

trust that the dots will somehow connect

in your future.”

Television host Conan O’Brien

offered a unique spin on the

ever-popular “learn from your

failures” trope to Harvard graduates in 2000.

“Your biggest liability

is your need to succeed,

your need to always find yourself on the sweet side

of the bell curve … but suc-

cess is a lot like a bright white

tuxedo – you feel terrific when you get it, but then you’re desperately

afraid of getting it dirty … of spoil-

ing it,” O’Brien quipped. “Today, I’m as nostalgic for the bad as I am for the

good … Fall down. Make a mess. Break

something occasionally. Know that your

mistakes are your own unique way of

getting to where you need to be.”And one more example of unconven-

tional-yet-encouraging advice to young

people was Winston Churchill’s speech

to graduates of Harrow School in 1941

during World War II. In it, he stressed the

value of using one’s imagination, but he

noted that imagination wouldn’t neces-

sarily make life easier.

“You cannot tell from appearances

how things will go,” he said. “Sometimes imagination makes things out far worse

than they are; yet without imagination

not much can be done. Those people who

are imaginative see many more dangers

than perhaps exist; certainly many more

than will happen; but then they must also

pray to be given that extra courage to

carry this far-reaching imagination.

“Never give in. Never, never, never,

never – in nothing, great or small, large

or petty – never give in, except to con-

victions of honor and good sense,” he added. “Never yield to force; never yield

to the apparently overwhelming might of

the enemy.”
