Our GCSE and A-level artists were able to showcase their talent at this year’s Art Exhibition on 10 June. Guests enjoyed viewing the range of beautiful work and many commented on the outstanding quality and variety of work on display. This was a wonderful opportunity for the girls’ hard work to be recognised and fully appreciated. Winners of this year’s Principal’s Art Prize were: Emily Buchanan and Beth Rankin (GCSE Level); Isabella Smyth and Faye Wallace (AS-level) and Alice Campbell (A-level). Well done to these girls and to all of our artists for being part of this very successful event.

In the pre-exam days of early May, all of the Form One classes were treated to a series of trips to Carrickfergus Castle. Fortunately the weather remained fine, and the girls were able to enjoy learning about this fascinating period of our history. Thanks to the staff of the History Department for arranging these trips.

On 13 April, all of Form Two visited the synagogue on Somerton Road as part of a unit of work on the religion of Judaism. We were welcomed by Mr Neville Finch, who has been a part of the synagogue community here his whole life. This is the only synagogue in Northern Ireland, and it was a privilege to hear about the significant role Jewish people have played in the history of Belfast. Mr Finch took questions from the pupils and was able to give them a flavour of what synagogue worship involves. He also talked about some of the challenges involved in observing Jewish law in Belfast, including the particular difficulties of keeping a kosher diet. Both pupils and staff very much enjoyed the opportunity to visit the synagogue, and we hope to maintain this important link between the RS Department and the Jewish community in Belfast.

This year’s Italy trip ran from 16-21 March, and despite Easter being so early, we were fortunate to enjoy fine weather for the duration of the visit. We began with two days in Rome, taking in the Colosseum, Vatican City, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. From Rome we travelled to the small Umbrian city of Assisi, birthplace of St Francis, and our base for the remainder of the trip. After a day spent exploring this very beautiful medieval city, we took other day trips to Florence, Siena and San Gimignano. In Florence we were lucky enough to have a guided tour of the most famous paintings in the Uffizi Gallery (including Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’), and had time to buy some souvenirs in the San Lorenzo street

market. Everyone had a wonderful time! We covered a lot of ground in our week in Italy, and everyone was grateful for the Easter holiday to catch up on some sleep!

Throughout June, sixty-five of our Bronze DofE girls completed their hillwalking expeditions. The girls all enjoyed the sunshine and great views, despite a few sore feet and a very early wake-up call from the dawn chorus! The girls walked in the Mourne Mountains, and camped for one night in Tollymore Forest Youth Campsite. The Award also includes weekly volunteering, skills and physical activities; forty-seven of the current Bronze group have already completed their sections and submitted evidence for their Awards to be approved. We are confident that the rest of the group will follow soon! This means that Strathearn has one of the highest Bronze Award completion rates in Northern Ireland. Well done to all the girls and thanks to all those parents, teachers, leaders and supporters who have helped to achieve this great result.

Through participation in the scheme, our Bronze group pupils have contributed over 1000 volunteering hours to their local communities. The girls have also learned emergency first aid and developed communication and team work skills. Our Silver and Gold Groups in Forms Five and Lower Sixth are looking forward to their hillwalking and canoeing expeditions over the summer break, in which they will visit the Mournes, the Galloway Hills in Scotland, Lough Erne, River Shannon and the Royal Canal. Good luck to all involved.

Finally, congratulations to the eleven Upper Sixth girls who have now completed their Gold Awards; several of them were able to make the trip to London to receive their certificates in St James’s Palace.

Congratulations to Lauren Ayre, Niamh Hanna, Laura Gordon and Zara Hanna (all 1T), who won the Royal Society of Chemistry Salter’s Competition at Queen’s University Belfast on 24 May. The girls competed against schools from all over Northern Ireland, and it was the first time they had participated in an event of this type. Well done!

Well done to all those who took part in the Inter-House Debates over the last two weeks. The Finals were held on 13 June, in which McCaughey and Watts battled it out in both sections of the competition. In the Form 1 and 2 Final, Saya Caddy and Sorcha Corbett spoke for McCaughey, and Halah Irvine, Alex Agar and Molly Walker spoke for Watts. The motion was ‘This House believes school holidays are too long’. After much heated debate it was agreed, perhaps surprisingly, that school holidays were indeed too long and the debate was won by Watts. In the Form 3 and 4 Final, Tavisha Sood spoke for Watts and Anna Corbett spoke for McCaughey. This time the debate was won by McCaughey who spoke in favour of the motion. Well done girls!

Page 4: Congratulations to the following girls, who have been ... · Lauryn Todd, 5R, and Abigail Acheson, 5R, who passed their Grade Six Viola Exam. Sarah Lowry, 1S, who raised over £1700

On 27 April, Halah Irvine (2R), Sarah McDonald (2R) and Aiswarya Venugopal (1R) visited the Parliament Buildings, Stormont, with Mrs Collins for a BookTrust event at which they met the Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell. He spoke very humorously about his life and work as an author and illustrator. He signed autographs for the girls and gave each of them a little drawing. All of the schools visiting were given a poster drawn and signed by Chris on the day. This will take pride of place in our school library!

The annual Library Awards took place in the library on 14 June, with twenty-nine Pupil Librarians receiving certificates ranging from the First Award to Platinum. A video was shown of the Library Assistants talking about their favourite jobs in the library, and the certificates were then presented by Mrs Myers. Special mention was given to Jodie Morgan (1H) and Rachel Golden (1H), who were named Library Assistants of the Month, and to Chloe McBurney who received the Library Assistant of the Year certificate and badge. Gold and Platinum certificates were also awarded to Katie McLoughlin (U6), who has helped in the library for six years. Kezia Hobson received a School Lifetime Achievement certificate for her consistent commitment to the library over her whole time at Strathearn.

CONGRATULATIONS TO: Tess McMillen, 4T, who won the Junior Gross Prize in the Annual Schools’ Golf Competition on 11 March. Mia Davison, 1S, who competed very successfully in the Ulster Age Groups Swimming competition (achieving four gold, four silver, and one bronze medal), in the Leinster competition (two gold medals), in the Ulster Qualifying competition (three gold medals), and in the Irish Nationals (two bronze medals). Mia was also selected for the Ulster Team to compete in the Scottish Nationals. Grace Ross, 1R, who achieved three qualifying times in the 100m, 400m and 800m Freestyle for the Irish Division Two competition. Rachel Childs, 1S, who competed in the Ards Junior Open Gala and came 1st in the 50m Backstroke, 1st in the 50m Freestyle, 2nd in the 50m Butterfly and 3rd in the 50m Breaststroke. Congratulations to Erin McConnell and Amelia Kane who have been selected to represent Ireland in swimming at the UK School Games in September. Anna McCabe, 2H, who came 3rd in the Celtic Cup Acrobatic Gymnastics Trials in March. Amelia Hopkins, 2H, who won a silver medal in the High Jump in the Firmus Open in April. Aimee McGill and Emma Hylands, 2H, who won bronze in the pairs category of the NI Schools’ Gymnastics Competition in February. Emma McGugan, 3H, who was selected to play for the Irish U15 Squash Team. She competed in the Five Nations in Birmingham and in the Europeans in Belgium. Laura Graham, 4A, who won the Sherrad Trophy at the Royal Belfast Golf Club.

Congratulations to Amelia Kane, 2A, for her superb achievement in winning the U13 Girls’ Section of the 2016 Mini London Marathon on 24 April. Amelia completed the three-mile race in a brilliant time of just 17 minutes and 23 seconds. After her victory she posed with her trophy for photographs alongside Prince Harry!

On Thursday 9 and Friday 10 June, our junior pupils staged two excellent performances of The Little Mermaid. The acting, singing and dancing were all superb, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the show. Congratulations to all of the cast and backstage team, and special thanks to Ms Ferris and Mrs Ingram for their roles in overseeing the production.

Sarah Brown has been selected for the Ulster U18 Development Squad which will be travelling to play a series of matches in Wales at the end of June. Our U12 hockey players had an opportunity to act as ball girls for the recent international matches between the Irish and Spanish Women’s Hockey Teams. This was a great opportunity to see the game being played at this high level, meet some of the players, and get their photo taken with them!

Our Football Club has been meeting at lunchtime on Fridays. The girls have had lots of fun during these sessions – many thanks to Mr English and Mr Turk who have taken the club. The girls were keen to test their skills against another school, and they made the short trip to Dundonald High School on 13 June for their first match. Strathearn played very well and deserved to get more out of the game, but were unfortunate to concede two second half goals. Andra Vladu opened the scoring for Strathearn and proved a constant threat throughout the game. There was a lot of excitement at half-time with the hope that we could get a positive result, but Dundonald took their chances in the second half and we were unable to turn things around. Mr English and Mr Turk want to commend all of the girls who were involved with football this year, and would encourage them to continue on next season when hopefully there will be a few more matches.

The team consisted of the following girls: Sarah West, Amber Hamilton, Ella Keane, Kristin Kerr, Jemima Thomas, Amy Ellison, Megan Fitzpatrick, Tory Kerr, Tatiana Brown, Jana McCabe, Andra Vladu, Tara Kerr, Alice Henry, Charlotte Black and Katie Robinson.

Congratulations to Mia Davison, Eve McKibbin, Amelia Kane and Rebekah Burrows who competed successfully in the Irish Schools’ Relay Championships. The team won gold medals in the Individual Medley Relay and in the Freestyle Relay.

A number of girls from Forms 1–4 have been enjoying cricket sessions on Wednesday afternoons. The sessions have been taken by Mr Shane Getkate, a Cricket Development Officer who plays for CSNI Cricket Club. He is ably helped by our own Miss Feeney. Some of the older girls have gone on to join local cricket clubs as a result of their introduction to the sport during these sessions at school. Our U13 girls entered the Super 8s Tournament which took place on 10 June at Friends’ School Lisburn. As newcomers to the event, we knew that we would have our work cut out for us in this competition. Running in pads and seeing through the helmets proved to be an additional challenge! The girls, however, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They learnt a lot about the sport and came away eager to improve their skills.

There were some great individual successes, but the performances of all the athletes contributed towards the overall team points. The Senior Team finished in 3rd place, the Juniors in 2nd, and the Intermediates in 1st. Strathearn had the most points overall, and so we brought home the Ulster Schools' Challenge Cup. Following our athletes’ outstanding performances at District and Ulster level, ten individual girls and a Relay Team qualified for the Irish Schools’ Athletics Championships which took place in Tullamore, Co Offaly, on 4 June. The Strathearn athletes stepped out against the best in Ireland and while not all of them won medals or got personal bests, they all did our school proud and did their utmost to compete at this very high level. The athletes also had to contend with temperatures of twenty-seven degrees! It was also a very special occasion for Irish Schools’ Athletics as this was its centenary year.

Senior Girls - Overall 2nd in Ireland Megan Marrs 1st 100m Hurdles (IRISH CHAMPION!); Kate Farrelly 2nd Triple Jump & 5th 100m Hurdles; Lauren Brooker 8th High Jump.

Junior Girls - Overall 1st - Irish Junior Champions! Harriet Platt 1st Triple Jump (IRISH CHAMPION!); Amelia Kane 3rd 1500m; Murphy Miller 4th 800m; Aimee Stitt 9th 800m; Relay: 3rd Leah McClements, Aimee Stitt, Murphy Miller & Rhiannon Brady. Congratulations to all of our athletes on this excellent series of performances, and in particular to the Junior Team, who have been crowned Irish Champions for the second successive year. See the school website and gallery for more information about this great achievement.

Interprovincial Selection and Results This year, a record number of Strathearn girls were selected for the U17 Interprovincial Team to represent Ulster at the Tailteann Schools’ Championships in Santry on 25 June. Eve Truesdale, Natalie McHugh, Kerry Annett, Olivia Nelson, Murphy Miller and Amelia Kane all made the team and Beth Crosbie was a reserve. This tremendous achievement reflected the girls’ hard work and high levels of performance this season. On the day itself, Murphy Miller finished 5th in the 800m, Kerry Craig was 3rd in the Triple Jump and Amelia Kane was 2nd in the 1500m. Eve Truesdale and Olivia Nelson also qualified, but were unable to attend. Well done girls!

Form One Tennis Club was held on Thursdays after school, and it proved to be a popular extra-curricular activity with over twenty-five girls attending every week. Congratulations to Anna Gillespie, Hannah McGugan, Lauren Mooney, Rachel Golden and Tilly Nield who were selected for the team. In the Year 8 Tennis Cup they played 4 matches. They beat Bloomfield & Hunterhouse 6-0, but unfortunately Victoria College and Sullivan proved to be tougher opponents. Despite drawing 3-3 on total matches, the girls were defeated by Victoria by just two games and lost out to Sullivan by seven games. Well done to the girls who battled hard in each game. It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic players and we look forward to welcoming more next season. The Junior A Tennis Team contained a talented bunch of players, who progressed to the final of the Junior Tennis Cup competition. Emma McGugan, Jemima Thomas, Grace Hutchinson and Erin Stewart played in two group matches against Victoria College and Methody B; they won 5-1 and 6-0 respectively. In the knockout stages of the cup they met Sullivan in the quarter-finals, and the girls comfortably won 6-0. In their semi-final, they defeated Ballymena Academy 5-1. On 16 June, the team travelled to Bangor Lawn Tennis Club to play Methody A Team in the final. It was a highly contested match which resulted in a 4-2 victory for Methody. Well done to the girls who finished runners-up in this competition, and a special thank you to Emma Craig who stepped up from the B Squad to fill in for Erin Stewart who was absent for the final. The Junior B Tennis Team, consisting of Murphy Miller, Emma Craig, Sarah Craig, Sarah West and Clara Potts, secured the Junior Plate title this year. In the group stages they beat Hunterhouse and Belfast High School 6-0 in each match. They lost 5-1 to a strong Methody A Team, which placed them as runners-up in their group. In the Plate competition, they had a convincing 6-0 win against Banbridge in the quarter-finals, and a strong 6-0 win against Regent in the semi-finals. The girls played Victoria College in the final on 16 June at Bangor Lawn Tennis Club. The team had a real battle on their hands in this match, and it finally finished 4-2 to Strathearn. Well done to the Junior B Team for a successful season. The Intermediate Cup and Plate competition this year was run in a knock-out format. Our four talented players, (photo) L-R: Victoria Hamilton, Megan Chambers, Jessica Leeman and Jessica Moore, had a successful run to retain their title as Intermediate Cup champions. They beat Grosvenor A 6-0 to progress to the quarter-finals, in which they faced Down High School away from home. A convincing 6-0 win allowed them to progress to the semi-final stage against Sullivan. The team travelled to Sullivan and comfortably beat the opposition 6-0. On 21 June, they travelled to Windsor Lawn Tennis Club to play Methody in the final. It was a thoroughly entertaining morning with some fabulous tennis on show. Strathearn’s strength and talent prevailed, and they won 6-0 to lift the cup! The Intermediate B Team consisted of Claire Whiteside, Ellen Gilpin, Claire Hunter and Katie Caldwell. In the knockout cup competition their first opponent was Wallace. The Lisburn side travelled to Strathearn in April, and Strathearn won 6-0. Unfortunately they faced Methody A in the quarter-finals, and despite a competitive game with some lengthy rallies, the strong Methody side defeated Strathearn 5-1 to knock them out of the competition. The Senior Team consisted of Saskia Criag, Bonnie Ramsay, Emily Whiteside and Rachel Thomas. The Senior Cup competition also ran as a knockout competition this year. Strathearn’s first opponents Victoria College unfortunately forfeited their points because they were unable to field a team. They faced Sullivan in the quarter-final stage, but lost 4-2. Thank you to the senior girls for giving up their time during a busy exam period to represent the school.
