A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Back when I was in college seminary, I led a Bible study group at my home parish. On the second week of the class, three gentlemen arrived who had not been present at the first meet-ing. One was a former parishioner who had left the Catholic Church and joined an evangelical protestant faith community. He brought with him two friends from his faith community, and it soon became evident why they were there. They wanted to challenge the Catholic Church. The man who had been the former parishioner told everyone present how Catholics did not take the Bible literally, and that is why he had left the Church. He and his two companions then launched into an unfocused attack on anything and everything that the Catholic Church taught

or that they perceived it taught. Obviously, one of their targets was the Church's devotion to the Blessed and Ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God. The three men complained that the Church taught things about Mary that are not in the Bible. Implicit in that indictment was their rejection of what the Church holds -- and they misunderstood -- as Tradition. They wanted to know why the Church believes things that are not in the Bible like the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, or even Mary's title of -- and here they practically tore their vesture as a sign of blasphemy -- Mother of God. The class that evening showed me just what happens when people forget their roots. Whether they are the roots of family, ethnicity, or religion, when we forget our roots, we sever the connection to meaning and iden-tity, and that is most evident in the Protestant rejection of the importance of Tradition in the Christian faith. Those three men were eager to reject any and all of the Tradition surrounding the Mother of God, but they failed to realize that in doing so, they were implicitly rejecting the Church's teaching on Christ as well. The teachings of the Church on Mary are a direct result of its teachings on Christ. We often do not appreci-ate that the early Church truly struggled and fought (often literally) about just who Jesus Christ is. It took hun-dreds of years and several ecumenical councils for the Church to figure out and define exactly who Jesus is. At the councils of Nicaea in 325 A.D. and Constantinople in 381 A.D., the Church formulated the creed that we say at Mass. In the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, the Church defines and proclaims that Jesus Christ is, in fact, God. Prior to that, there were many in the Church, most notably the bishop Arius, who denied the divinity of Christ. Defining the divinity of Christ paved the way for the Church to teach that Jesus was one per-son with both a divine and human nature. Therefore, when Mary gave birth to the one person Jesus, she gave birth to him who is both fully human and fully divine. So at the Council of Ephesus in 431, the Church was able to say that Mary was the Theotokos, or God-bearer, or Mother of God. It was because the Church had finally understood and articulated Christ's divinity that it was able to draw a theological conclusion about Mary. All of this brings us to today: Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day to all you moms. You, no doubt, have an insight into this mystery that the Church Fathers did not. You have carried life in your own bodies, and that life is the image of God. You are all, at least in a little way, God-bearers, theotokoi. So it is most fitting that we celebrate our annual May Crowning on Mother's Day. When we crown Mary, we are acknowledging her as Queen Mother. In the Jewish monarchy of the Old Testament, the wife of the king was not a particularly powerful person. Rather, the mother of the king shared in the power of the king and was revered by the king himself (see 1 Kings 1:11-37 and 2:12-25). We crown Mary because she is the Queen Mother, and Christ her son is the king. The honor and devotion we give to Mary is a reflection of the honor and glory we give to her son. By crowning our image of the Mother of God, we are acknowledging her place in the life of her son, and we are actually giving glory and worship to Christ. So happy Mother's Day to all you moms. Thank you for giving us birth, raising us, and loving us. Today, all of you deserve a crown. This weekend we celebrated a very special day for our second grade children. They received their First Holy Communion. These children and their parents and teachers have worked long and hard to prepare for this day, and we are very proud of them. Congratulations to our First Communion Class. We look forward to sharing with you at the Altar of our Risen Lord every Sunday. Fr. Michael

First Grade has been reading about butterflies since we had the butterflies that will soon be hatching in our classroom. We have painted lady butterflies. We know that the monarch butterfly eats milkweed, so we are trying to grow milkweed plants to be put in an outside garden in the summer. Pictured are the first stages of planting our seeds.

7th grader, Alexa Zornoza, from Mrs. Howard's language arts class, came to read an original story that she wrote for the kindergarten. The kindergarteners really enjoyed her story, and those of fellow classmates.

SitStayRead is a literacy organization in the US that uses dogs as a tool to improve reading in grades one through four. They believe reading to a dog increases confidence and generates excitement about reading. On Friday April 29, Louie, a certified Assis-tance Dog, came to Divine Infant for a visit. The students in Kindergarten, First Grade, and Sr. Carolyn's group wrote stories to read to him. Louie also visited 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade before leaving for the day. Louie was a good listener and didn't mind if a stu-dent skipped a word. He was very proud of all the children and his tail said so!

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION On Sunday, May 29 at the 11:30 AM Mass, Di-vine Infant Parish will celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ with a Corpus Christi Procession. We invite all parishioners and their families, friends and neighbors to join us to publicly celebrate the gift of the Eucharist as we walk together in prayer and song. At the end of Mass, the Blessed Sacrament will be processed from the church to four stations where we will gather for Gospel readings and prayer. As we follow Christ, we will sing hymns of praise with one voice. First Communicants are encouraged to wear their special outfits and walk with their parents. This is a perfect opportunity to express our Catholic identity in the world. We are a pilgrim people, following Christ, who leads us to the Father. Please join us for this beautiful celebration, bringing Christ to others in our community. For more information, call Fr. Michael Wanda, (708) 865-8071, ext. 203 or Dr. Claudia Dado, ext. 304.

Thank you for your consideration in this regard.

A FEW WORDS ON DEPRESSION… “Concussions and fractures I can understand, but depression is for those who can’t cope with life, can’t handle death, downsizing, or broken love affairs. “Depressed” is a label for weak people who can’t “get a life” or “pull themselves together.” I’m stronger than that, I know I am. Aren’t I? No, I’m just a good and decent human being who must learn not to lean while on ladders, not to run down stairs, and not to ask of my mind and spirit more than God ever intended. Concussions, fractures, and de-pression are ways of getting my attention, perhaps even of saving my life. Lord, the more I spend on denial the less time I’ll spend on listening to you, to my counselor, and to loved ones… and getting well.” (Excerpts taken from Protect Us From All Anxiety. Writ-ten by William Burke) If you look up the definition of depression you will find that it is categorized under mood disorders; major depression, bipolar disorder, and seasonal affective disorder. Mood disorders are defined as a serious, per-sistent disturbance in a person’s emotions that cause psychological discomfort and impair the ability to func-tion. Webster’s Dictionary defines depression as a hol-low or low place. I like the simplicity of these words. When a person is hollow or felling as if they are in a low place, it becomes difficult to find any signs of hope. When one enters into depression, all fears become ex-aggerated and we want to live under a big rock. May is Mental Health Month and statistics show that I in 10 Americans at one point or another report depres-sion. It is more common than AIDS, cancer and diabe-tes combined! Symptoms range from a change in sleep patterns and appetite, poor concentration, loss of energy, loss of interest in usual activities and a low self-esteem combined with hopelessness. The good news is that 80% of those treated with medication and ther-apy show improvement in their symptoms within 4 – 6 weeks of beginning therapy. Taking your medication and going for therapy does not mean that your depres-sion will disappear altogether. We need to learn how to deal with and control depression. We need to learn to not fear depression. We need to accept our humanity in this world and allow God to be present and walk with us. Keep in mind that the wounds of depression in no way affect your worth, your identity, or your relationship with God and the world. Be well, and know that God is walking along side of you every step of the way. Blessings, Jeannette Barczak Parish Nurse

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is now celebrated the Sunday after Trinity Sun-day. It is also known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi. On this feast day, we give special thanks for the gift of the Eucharist that Christ gave to us at the Last Supper. We recall His Passion, Death and Resurrection, acknowledge our Divine Encounter with Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist, and share in the Sacred Banquet as we gather at His table. A feature of this feast is the Corpus Christ Procession following the Mass. The feast of Corpus Christi has its origins in the Middle Ages. A young nun, St. Juliana of Liege, was par-ticularly devoted to Eucharistic adoration and prayer. She longed for a liturgical feast to honor the Blessed Sacrament and contacted the Bishop of Liege who then introduced the Solemnity in his diocese. Other bish-ops followed his example and the celebration of this feast spread. It was Pope Urban IV who brought it to the universal Church in 1264. In his Papal Bull, or doctrinal document, Transituris de hoc mundo, he wrote, “Although the Eucharist is celebrated solemnly every day, we deem it fitting that at least once a year it be celebrated with greater honor and a solemn commemoration.” Pope Urban asked St. Thomas Aquinas to write the prayers and hymns for the Divine Office. It is from Aquinas we have the Corpus Christi Sequence. By 1311, Pope Clement V issued a new decree which began the practice of a Corpus Christi Procession fol-lowing Mass. This tradition, to follow Christ in the consecrated Host to show publicly what we affirm and believe, is still an opportunity for contemporary Catholics to express their identity to others and to celebrate Christ in the world. Pope John Paul II, in his Encyclical, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, affirms, “The devout participation of the faithful in the Eucharistic procession on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ is a grace from the Lord which yearly brings joy to those who partake in it.” As we participate in the Procession, we are celebrat-ing our hope in eternal life, our desire to follow in Christ’s footsteps and our willingness to share this wonder-ful gift with everyone around us. In the world in which we live, who better to follow than Christ? When we bring Christ outside, we symbolically show this gift is meant to be happily given away. In his Corpus Christi homily in May 2013, Pope Francis summed it up well, “The Lord in the Eucharist makes us follow His path--that of service, of sharing, of giving.” Let’s take this opportunity the Church has given us to celebrate everything the Body and Blood of Christ really means to us, how it has transformed us and that this gift is here for everyone. Come to celebrate Mass and to walk in procession together. In the words of Aquinas, “here, Christ himself, the true God, is set before us as our food. What could me more wonderful than this?” Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L. On May 29, at the 11:30 Mass, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ with a Corpus Christi Procession. All are welcome!
