Wednesday 12 November 2014 - Term 4 Week 6
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their need, that it may benefit those who listen….. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Eph 4:29, 31, 32 There are many times when I am talking with students that passages such as the one from Paul’s writings printed above are very useful. In fact there are often times in my own dealings with people that I also find such passages useful and encouraging and correcting. I wonder whether this is your experience for Paul also tells us in 2 Tim 3:16 that the Bible (“all scripture”) is “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”. The Bible is God’s tool for doing each of these things and as such I encourage our staff to use the Bible when correcting behaviours around the school and as they deal with each other and the community. If we all only spoke words that were helpful for building others up according to their need; if we were all compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, wouldn’t it be a wonderful world to live in. I was encouraged at a meeting I attended to ask the question at the end of each day “did Christ die in vain?” The obvious answer to this is “no” because it is only through His death and resurrection that I am saved from the penalty of my sin and have the promise of eternal life. But if I haven’t shown that to others in how I relate to them and support them; if I haven’t shown that in the way that I speak, then perhaps Christ did die in vain because the resurrection is not evident in my behaviour. I hope that for each of us that this is not our experience, I pray that we might all bring glory to God (for that is our purpose) each day so that Christ’s death is not seen as being in vain.
Year 12 Graduation & Formal: On Wednesday evening we will celebrate the Year 12 graduation and formal dinner with our Year 12 students and their families. This is one of those wonderful opportunities that our community has each year to celebrate the partnership that we have had in many cases for the past 13 years as we have worked together to educate our children – well done to our HSC graduates, we are thankful for your time as members of the Tongarra community. Parent Helper’s Morning Tea: If you have assisted in any way throughout the year please come along and let the staff thank you on Tuesday morning with a morning tea spread. Our staff appreciate your support as we work together to educate our children. Congratulations to:
Those 13 Year 12 students (that we are aware of), over 50% of our Year 12 students, that gained “early entry” to university. This is a wonderful result and potentially the largest percentage we have ever achieved – well done!
The Year 7-10 students that have prepared well for their end of year examinations that they are completing this week.
Our Gold recipients that were awarded again this week on our Monday assembly – it was good to see a number of parents in attendance.

Give thanks that our Year 12 students have been relatively pleased with how their exams have
gone. Please pray for them as they now await their results and move into their new lives outside of
school. Pray that they will be blessed as they celebrate their Graduation and Formal tonight with
their families, friends and staff members.
Give thanks for the families that have been members of our community for a number of years who
have had their last child finish school this year.
Pray for Years 7-10 as they sit their end of year exams this week.
Pray for preparations for all of our end of year events. Pray particularly for our office staff during
this busy time.
Continue to pray for the Board as they go through the selection process for the Principal positions.
Pray for all the finalisation that needs to be done for 2015 classes, staff and schedules.
Please remember those within our school community who are struggling with illness.
Pray for our teaching staff who have a busy time over the next few weeks marking exams, finalising
reports and organising end of year activities.
Please remember in your prayers the Year 10 students, staff members and parents who are travel-
ling to Fiji to serve the local people in Nadi in 9 days time.

Australian English Competition
At the end of last term, a selection of students from Years 7 - 12 sat the UNSW
Australian English Competition. This competition tests the students in a number
of different English disciplines, including reading, vocabulary, textual devices and
syntax. Historically, Tongarra has always had good student results, with this year
being no different. Our students were awarded a total of 5 Distinctions and 11
Credit and Merit awards. This result means that over half of our students placed
in the top 40% or better in the competition. In fact within each high school year
group, our school was placed well above the national average across the competi-
tion.
A special mention must go to Ashleigh Gates (11), Eden
Williams (10), David Cuthbertson (8) and Ben Williams (7)
who achieved results in the top 5% of the competition, a
stellar effort. The English staff would like to take this
opportunity to thank and congratulate all students who
participated and look forward to continuing these results
into the future. Other winners in the Credit category were
- Ben Markoulis (8), Liam Brown (9), Emily DeLaTorre (9),
Karah Knight (9), Naomi Bolton (10), Emily Monro (10),
Holly Waples (10), Sandy Lowcock (10), Samuel
Cuthbertson (11), Melanie Oudejans (12), Hannah

An Update from Year 6
Year 6 students recently decided to raise money within the class to help combat eye disease in Outback communities. During our unit of study 'The Outback' earlier this year, we learnt about the chronic problems with eye and sight problems caused by cataracts and other issues. They learnt that $25 secures one eye operation. So far the class has paid for one operation and are on the way to their second operation. Joshua Monie is counting money raised before sending the first donation.

Can you help??
Our school community includes many amazing volunteers that
keep various activities running. Your involvement will enrich you
child’s time at ICS and support the teachers and staff.
In 2015, we need a couple of volunteers to help coordinate certain
activities. These are:
Bookclub Coordinator
The book club coordinator arranges for the Scholastic Book club brochures to go
out to all of the classes collects the returned orders and places the orders. On re-
ceipt of the books, the coordinator arranges for the orders to get back to the fami-
lies.
Banking Coordinator
A role description will be available next week.
Food Day Coordinator
A role description will be available next week.
Please think and pray carefully if you might be able to help out in this way. For
questions, please contact the school office.
Thank you.

Year 10 Fiji Service Trip 21st - 30th November 2014
During our visit to Fiji we will be visiting an orphanage and a local school in a village. It will be an exciting time to share with the children. We would love to take school supplies, small toys and clothing that will fit into our suitcases. If you are able to make a donation of a toy, any school supplies or clothing for children that would be very much appreciated.
If you can help in any way please leave the donation at the school office or pass on to a Year 10 student.
Contact Mrs Brennan for further information.
Urgent Head Lice Warning - Please check your children Please be aware we have had reports of head lice in the school and would ask that you check your child’s hair. Lice can be treated with any of the commercially available preparations from the chemist. However the eggs must be removed prior to returning to school. Check your child’s hair again in 7-8 days to deal with any lice that were missed during the first treatment. A product called Nyda (chemical free) sold at Albion Park Chemist has been recom-mended by parents as working well. Official health department information on head lice can be downloaded from www.health.nsw.gov.au . Please assist all of our families by checking your child’s hair. If there is any evidence of lice, the hair must be treated and bed linen and clothing must be washed thoroughly. All other members of the family should have their hair treated at the same time. This is very important as head lice spreads very easily and families who were clear during the holidays have been infected since returning to school Greg Batten Principal

Coffee Case Study
On Monday, 3rd November, Year 11 Business Studies went on an excursion to Australian Beverage Corporation in Wollongong. We observed the transformation process of turning the green coffee beans into roasted coffee beans using the expensive roasting machine. We also learnt about other aspects of the operations process, including the influence of technology, changes in consumer preferences, and global factors. Students now have an excellent case study for use in the HSC examination in 2015. - Mrs Brennan Business Studies Teacher

ONE WEEKEND ONLY, COMING TO A CINEMA NEAR YOU Beyond Sight is the incredible true story of seventeen-year-old Brazil-ian surfer Derek Rabelo. Born amidst the beautiful city of Guarapari, Derek’s father prayed that his son would become a professional surfer. When on 25 May 1992 Derek was born blind, his prayers seemed unanswered. But with unwavering support from his family, Derek undertakes a grueling three-year journey of mental, physical and spiritual training, encountering some of the biggest names in the sport along the way. Laird Hamilton, Kelly Slater and Rob Machado are all humbled by Derek’s passion and drive as he perseveres against the odds to live out his dream: to surf the legendary Pipeline.
BEYOND SIGHT: THE DEREK RABELO STORY is coming to a cinema near you for one weekend only on the 14th - 16th November this year. As the Aussie team working with this film, we're so excited to present it to you and would like to ask for your support in spreading the word.

Cordeaux Campus Kids Clothes Swap Fundraiser Illawarra Christian School Cordeaux Campus - Resource Centre (Library)
Saturday 15th November - 2pm
So I hear you ask, “What is involved in a Kids Clothes swap event”?
A clothes swap is a fun, cost saving event, where for a small entry fee of $10 you can update
your children’s wardrobe just by bringing along any clothes, shoes or accessories your child no longer needs (that are still in good condition), and swap them with something else – free.
It is a simple concept that:
1. Saves you money in purchasing new clothes for your kids, that they just grow out of too
quickly anyway. 2. Raises money for the school, to be put back into great school projects.
3. Donates back to specific areas of need within our Illawarra community with the left over
items. 4. Is great for the environment by preventing more landfill, and reducing the demand on
water, energy and raw materials.
How it works: Clean out your kids’ wardrobes, bring along any clothes you no longer require
(all of good quality, that you would be happy to see on another child), display on tables marked with appropriate clothing size, and once the event is declared officially open you go and find
new items to take home.
Bring clothes sized 000 – Yr 12 boys and girls.
Come along and see how many lives some old clothes and $10 can touch and benefit. Bring your family, friends and neighbours, and see what its like to live in community with each other.
It is simple, it is fun, it is cost saving and it is not to be missed! Enquiries:

Have your say on the Albion Park Rail Bypass
Roads and Maritime Services is planning for a future extension of the M1 Princes Motorway between Yallah and Oak Flats to bypass Albion Park Rail.
The bypass will complete the ‘missing link’ for a high standard road between Sydney and Bomaderry.
Roads and Maritime is now seeking feedback on the preferred design for the bypass. This includes the interchange designs and locations and shortening the route through the Croom Regional Sporting Complex. Roads and Maritime will be holding information sessions over the coming weeks. You are invited to drop in at any time during an information session to discuss the bypass concept design with members of the project team.
