A note about candle lighting on the 2nd day of a holiday: Jewish tradition says that while we are not permitted to light a fire on a yontuv, we are permitted to transfer a fire on yontuv. This is important for candle lighting on the 2nd day of a holiday

(2nd night of Rosh Hashana, 2nd night of Sukkot and Simhat Torah). Prior to the beginning of the 1st day of a holiday, you

should light a yahrzeit candle so that after dark on the 2nd night of a holiday, you can light your yontuv candles

from the yahrzeit candle. If you have any questions, please contact Rabbi Rubenstein.

Kid’s Book Club – “Big Ugly Guy”Saturday, November 23 at 10:30 a.m.Sammy Greenberg would rather talk back to The Boyz–a gang of bullies at his school–and get his head stuck in the toilet than constantly be afraid. But when his friend Skink gets beaten up so badly that he has to go to the hospital, Sammy thinks he may be in over his head. He decides to build a golem–a mythical protector from Jewish folklore, made of clay and animated by the ineffable name of God. But this monster doesn’t just protect him and Skink from The Boyz, he is also a great drummer for their rock-jazz-klezmer fusion band! But golems come with warnings. They will protect you until they don’t.

B.U.G (Big Ugly Guy) by Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple is a fun read for kids 8-12 years old. Everyone is invited to join Rabbi Rubenstein to talk about the book and enjoy a Shabbat lunch. No cost to attend but advanced registration to www.cbahm.org/event/biguglyguy is appreciated.

The Heart of TalmudThe Twelve Spies as found in Sotah 34b-35a

with Rabbi Steven Rubenstein

Thursday nights from 7:30-9:00 p.m.October 31, November 7, November 14

While many people think of Talmud primarily as a source of Jewish law, the Talmud is full of rabbinic stories that present the ideas, attitudes, and theology of our ancestors. In this 3-part class, we will examine an extended series of rabbinic stories and midrashim about the incident of the twelve spies discussed in the Book of Numbers. In addition to our study of the Talmudic text itself, we will also consider a variety of modern understandings of this text with a focus on a reading from the 20th century philosopher Emmanuel Levinas.

This class will provide an opportunity for direct study of the primary sources in the Talmud in either the original or in translation. We’ll be creating a bet midrash-style learning environment with hevruta/paired learning.

This course is free and open to the community. Everyone is welcome. To register, visit: www.cbahm.org/event/12spies

Dear Friends,What follows is a translation of a story told by Abba Kovner (there is a brief bio at the bottom) at a teacher’s seminar years ago. The translation is by Rabbi Daniel Goldfarb. Here is Kovner’s story:It’s clear that Israel is not strange to any of the participants in this seminar today, but I imagine that for each of us Israel means something else. The Nazi ghetto did not make me a religious person, and I did not become a romantic in the forests with the Partizans. On the day I first arrived in Jerusalem, before even washing my face or changing my clothes, I went to the Kotel. It was 1945, and the place was narrow, crowded, dirty and depressing. British soldiers were stationed there, armed with guns and rubber truncheons. I had no friends or relatives who longed for those large stones. I did not go there to pray, my head was uncovered, and I had no plan to push a note into a crack between the stones.Behind me I could hear the donkeys braying and the Arab merchants whose language I did not understand, and I was flushed with the odd sensation of fear and foreignness and the feeling that I belong somewhere else. And then someone pulled at my sleeve and asked in a whisper, “maybe you can join the minyan?”Had the fellow called out like the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s young men who grab you by the sleeve at the bus station in Tel Aviv or on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, in a commanding tone: “Are you Jewish? Come put on tefillin!” I would have responded the way I do to the ChaBaD commandoes: “Sorry, I’m Jewish but I don’t put on tefillin.”But the anonymous fellow by the Kotel in 1945 said only: “we need a tenth for a minyan,” and his voice was like the voice of Avraham Leib, the shamash.Avraham Leib was the shamash of the local shul in the city where I grew up (Vilna). In those days it was called “Jerusalem of Lita.” For morning and evening services there were enough davenners, but for Mincha, even in Jerusalem of Lita there were not many. The elderly shamash would stand in the doorway of the synagogue and, in his hoarse voice, invite Jews to make the minyan.I’m sure you know that minyan is an important value-concept in Judaism, perhaps the most Jewish thing in Judaism, to be part of the minyan. To know that nine Jews need a tenth, and that the individual Jew needs nine more to be a people, a divine congregation. At that moment it was as if the thousands of miles that my feet had trodden from Vilna to Jerusalem disappeared. I put on a hat and joined the minyan. I felt I’d arrived.*Note on Abba Kovner from Wikipedia: Abba Kovner (March 14, 1918 – September 25, 1987) was a Jewish Hebrew and Yiddish poet, writer and partisan leader. In the Vilna Ghetto, his manifesto was the first time that a target of the Holocaust identified the German plan to murder all Jews. His attempt to organize a ghetto uprising failed, but he fled into the forest, became a Soviet partisan, and survived the war. After the war, Kovner led a secretive organization to take revenge for the Holocaust; he made aliyah in 1947. Considered one of the greatest poets of modern Israel, he received the Israel Prize in 1970.To join our Beth Ahm minyan team or for more information, please call or email me. Remember, it’s not how often one comes to minyan, but that one makes the commitment.I wish you and your family a Sweet, Healthy and Happy New Year!

Unity and Pluralism within The Jewish People

Message from the RabbiLooking just beyond Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur you’ll find the festival of Sukkot. The lulav and etrog are key elements of the celebration of course, and they are seen as symbolic in a wide variety of ways. In one midrash, the lulav and etrog represent different types of individuals that make up The Jewish People. Just as the various elements of the lulav and etrog are different one from the other, so too are individual Jews different one from the other. And still, God wants the lulav and etrog to function as a unit. That’s why we pick up, bless, and wave the lulav (made up of 3 parts) with the etrog all together in our hands. The midrash wants us to see, feel, and act in a way which expresses the unity of the Jewish people.

Nevertheless, unity doesn’t mean conformity. Beth Ahm has been offering an opportunity (through the Beth Ahm Facebook page – check out the Both/And group) for people to learn about the history and ideas of the Conservative movement through a podcast of Chancellor Arnold Eisen of The Jewish Theological Seminary. Not surprisingly, Dr. Eisen is a committed Conservative Jew. Still, in response to those who believe that denominations within the Jewish community are misguided, Dr. Eisen says, “I firmly believe in denominational differences…it is impossible for all of us to agree on what the Torah wants from us, and therefore we must as

Jews practice different sorts of Judaism. These varieties must be strong…”

Rabbi Dr. Ismar Schorsch (the previous chancellor of JTS) emphasized a similar idea in his work The Sacred Cluster when he wrote that one of the core values of the Conservative movement, “is an undiminished devotion to the ideal of klal yisrael, the unfractured totality of Jewish existence and the ultimate significance of every single Jew. In the consciousness of Conservative Jews, there yet resonates the affirmation of haverim kol yisrael (all Israel is still joined in fellowship)—despite all the dispersion, dichotomies and politicization that history has visited upon us, Jews remain united in a tenacious pilgrimage of universal import.”

The Jews are one people and it is important to remind ourselves of that not only when we gather in a large group to call out Am Yisrael Chai – The Jewish people lives! Yet, even though we are one nation, we are a nation of many opinions. (as many, many Jewish jokes can affirm) To believe in Klal Yisrael – that the Jewish people are one – is not the same as saying that we all agree. In fact, believing in Klal Yisrael is to believe that we are one people even though we don’t agree!

I was once speaking with a Jew by Choice about what drew her to become Jewish. One element of her choice was embedded in her experience with her college sorority—one with many Jewish members. She wondered at (and then really appreciated) the fact that she could have Jewish sorority sisters---one who was Jewishly knowledgeable and observant, one who was not knowledgeable, an atheist, and non-observant---and they each treated each other as Jews. They knew that they were part of Am Yisrael, they were part of the family of the Jewish people. We take this sort of thing for granted most of the time. We shouldn’t. We should cherish these bonds when we agree with our brothers and sisters, and especially when we disagree.

“Relationships” heads the list of what matters to me in life. Especially at this High Holiday time of year, the statement “it all comes down to relationships” is on my mind.

Yet, forming and maintaining relationships can be a challenge. It’s often hard to find the right words to express one’s thoughts and feelings on the spot. It can be hard to know how to start a conversation or how to proceed once we do. As President, there have been many moments in which I would have liked to continue a conversation with one of our members well beyond “Shabbat Shalom”, but time pressure or my natural shyness got in the way. It’s something I endeavor to improve every year.

As a synagogue, we also strive to connect to and enrich all our congregants. Much of the time we get it right. But sometimes we miss a cue, or don’t meet a need. We know we have room for improvement. If there is something on your mind that we could be improving in our relationship, please let me know! You’ll be engaging in an age-old Days of Repentance tradition and building a relationship with a congregation that cares about you and wants to know you!

This favorite message of mine expresses my thoughts and hopes at this High Holiday time of year.

Wishing everyone at Beth Ahm and beyond a fulfilling, prosperous, healthy and peaceful 5780!

Shanah Tova U’Metukah! Best wishes for a happy and sweet new year. I look forward to seeing you during the Holidays.

Message from the President

Beth [email protected]

Jewish tradition teaches, “As my parents planted for me before I was born, so do I plant for those who will come after me.” A legacy gift will preserve and perpetuate the spiritual lives of our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

A legacy gift empowers you to give tzedakkah to your synagogue in a way that has a minimal impact on your current living expenses. Creating a legacy gift at Beth Ahm is easy. The giving opportunities below can help you achieve your philanthropic goals.

Contact David Goodman at 248-851-6880 or [email protected] to learn more.

Bequests & WillsThe simplest way to create a legacy at Beth Ahm is through a bequest. In your will or estate plan, you can designate a specific amount of money or percentage of your estate. Upon your passing, Beth Ahm receives the benefit of your bequest and your estate receives a tax deduction in the amount of the bequest. There is no minimum or maximum amount that you can bequeath and you retain control over your assets during your lifetime.

Retirement AccountsYou can name Congregation Beth Ahm as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401k or other qualified retirement plan. All you have to do is file a change of beneficiary form defining the amount or percentage of the retirement account that you want to gift to Beth Ahm. Like a bequest, Beth Ahm receives the benefit upon your passing and your estate receives a tax deduction. Unlike a bequest, a gift from your retirement account can avoid costly taxes, especially if your retirement account has substantial gains.

Life InsuranceThe gift of a new or existing policy is an inexpensive way to create your legacy and receive an immediate tax benefit. You can gift an existing policy, or a portion of it, by completing a form identifying Beth Ahm as the policy owner or beneficiary. New policies, with Beth Ahm listed as the owner or beneficiary, are a cost effective method of providing a long lasting benefit.

May their memories endure for a blessingHonor the memory of your loved ones by purchasing a memorial plaque in the Kahan Memorial Room. The purchase of a plaque

will ensure that your loved one’s name will be read during the week of their yahrzeit. It is a lasting tribute of your love that links the generations of your family. Plaques are currently $500 each. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to assure your

loved ones will be forever remembered at Congregation Beth Ahm. Contact David Goodman at 248-851-6880.
