Broken Back Benefits BI
In case you didn’t already know, Ibroke my back this summer. Stupidaccident: caught my toe on the stepsand instead of tumbling down, I satdown… HARD. Ouch. Two weeks laterand a diagnosis of T-8 compressionfracture, I had kyphoplasty, an amaz-ing surgery where they hammer asmall straw into the vertebral masswhich they use to blow up a balloon to return the vertebrato its proper height and shape, pop the balloon, shove someglue in, wait two minutes, and put a band-aid on. And then Iwaited for the bone to heal. Eight long weeks of waiting…and NOT doing what I like to do: soccer, hockey, biking, gar-dening. Did I mention I couldn’t do what I like doing in thesummer?
That’s where BI came in. Instead of doing sports, BI becamemy full-time summer job. I got to know the inner workingsof BI and did what needed to be done. As a result, BI is in abetter place and I’m still sane. I’m not sure what I wouldhave done without BI to focus my energy on! Symbiosis is awonderful thing!
What exactly happened on those gloriously low-humiditysummer days? In addition to routine maintenance:1. The parking lot was relined, thanks to Adam Boxer and hismom, Suzanne Simonhoff.2. The grounds were maintained and improved, thanks tothe landscaping committee, and especially to Anita Weber.(I didn’t really have anything to do with this, but the resultsare so spectacular that I couldn’t leave it out!)3. Trees were trimmed or removed4. The water pump was repaired so we could have water.5. A door lock was repaired.6. The lobby and sanctuary were deep cleaned.7. The sanctuary rugs were professionally cleaned.8. The front doors and sign posts were painted.9. Gutters were cleaned and extensions installed.10. Joe Deutsch, Facilities VP, and I met with myriad contrac-tors to develop a long-term plan for the upkeep of the out-side of the main building. We looked at the stucco, pilasters, south side windows and trim, portico, and water drainage. While nothing is emergent, we need to keep our building ingood shape and now have a better idea of its needs and as-sociated costs.11. In the office, we developed systems to make our staff’swork more efficient.
Pretty impressive, eh? Thank you, Beth Israel, for keepingme sane as I healed.
President’s Message:The Season Continues
It is Sukkot – the season of our rejoic-ing. Why is Sukkot so joyful? TheHigh Holidays - the Days of Awe - re-minded us that life is a privilege.Sukkot reminds us to savor that privi-lege. We are told to give thanks forour bounty and to share hospitality. The practices connected to dwelling ina sukkah help us to connect with thegreat outdoors and to experience the light offered by Jew-ish teaching, practice and community. The sukkahharkens back to the ancient story of God providing sukkot- booths - as a form of protection to the children of Israel asthey wandered in the wilderness. When we enter a sukkahtoday we are invited to experience our own connection tothe divine through nature, community, learning and otherSukkot practices.
As we give thanks for the bounty in our lives, the nourish-ing food on our tables and the nourishing community ofwhich we are a part, we also give thanks for the land itself. We continue our efforts to “green” Beth Israel, our homes, our workplaces and everywhere else. As the Fall unfolds wewill join in area wide efforts to educate and collaborate inthe service of healing and sustaining the planet. This isprofound and holy work that urgently requires our partici-pation and collaboration in an ongoing way.
In Mid-October we will celebrate two milestones at BethIsrael's first gala. I am delighted to welcome my colleague,Rabbi Nathan Martin, as our first Associate Rabbi. We areblessed to have his loving presence and rabbinic talents inour community. You made a wonderful choice in offeringhim this opportunity. We will also celebrate our "chai"**anniversary: I have been with Beth Israel for 18 years!. It isan accomplishment for a congregation to sustain such astrong long-term relationship with a rabbi. I am so gratefulto be with Beth Israel as we move into our 19th year withrenewed energy.
As you read through this newsletter you will see listingsand descriptions of classes, services, programs and more. Please take a moment to mark your calendars. There aremany opportunities to learn, to serve, to enjoy social con-nections and to connect to your own spirit and sense ofmeaning. Time is a precious gift and all too easy to squan-der. Take a few moments to plan out the next month andinclude opportunities to nourish your spirit and to grow.Beth Israel will support you in that goal if you make thetime to be here. Wishing you all a wonderful new year!

Many thanks to Lauri Mansky, Joe Deutsch, Deanie Heller (with Carlos!), and Lynn Cashell for stuffing the gala invitationsinto envelopes to ready them for mailing. Also a shout out to Josh and Jen Waterston for organizing and ordering the in-vitations, and creating the mailing labels. Plus, what would we do without Arlene Benz who took care of the bulk mailing! The Gala Committee
On Saturday, August 29 we gathered to watch and sing along to the Wizard of Oz. “Ozian” treats like Flying Monkey Cakes,Emerald City Jello, Yellow Brickle Road Brownies, Da Lollipop Guild lollipops, Scarecrow’s Cornfield Crunch, Over the Rain-bow fruit salad, and Horse of a Different Color juices were served. Many came in costume and sang along to all the old fa-vorites: Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, and Follow the Yellow Brick Road, among others.
Thanks to John Greenstine for setting up the audio/video, and Amy Sepinwall and Laura Lee Blechner for helping with thesnacks. And to all the “young at heart” to whom the movie is dedicated. Lynn Cashell

BI MEMBERS MAKE “EMPTY BOWLS” TO FEED THE HUNGRY
On August 27, eight Beth Israelites gathered in the ceramics studio of the Wallingford Community Arts Center. Our task: cre-ate soup bowls to be sold during CAC’s “Empty Bowls” event, scheduled to take place at the CAC on Sunday, October 25.Proceeds from the sale will be donated to local food banks.
After a brief introduction from our instructor, Carol, representatives of the BI community created a collection of bowls, eachone individually designed and executed to reflect the maker’s unique artistic vision and talents. Participating in this creativeexercise was an excellent way to experience community, with everyone focused on an individual project while sharing awarm and accepting time and space.
For those who are not yet familiar with Empty Bowls, it is a nationwide project dedicated to the aid of hunger-fighting organ-izations. Every fall, the CAC, in cooperation with the Potters Guild, brings together professional and amateur ceramic artiststo create and donate more than 500 one-of-a-kind ceramic bowls. Attendees at the Empty Bowls event pay a small donation, choose a bowl to use, and are served a simple meal of soup and bread. They keep the bowl as a reminder that there are al-ways empty bowls in the world.
Everyone is welcome to participate in this year’s Empty Bowls Event:Sunday, October 25, 2015 from Noon to 2 pm
Duke Gallery Community Arts Center414 Plush Mill Road

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
Our BI Social Action Committee, with the crucial support of dozens of congregants, fed over 160 hungry clients atthe Life Center on Monday night, August 31, and at least 100 of them came back for seconds. As usual, our fare wasvaried, but invariably delicious. Meat loaf, many kinds of chicken, delicious pasta, vegetable dishes, and all sorts ofsalads were served, as well as hard cooked eggs, fresh fruit, apple juice and desserts. There were even salmon cro-quettes and some pre-Labor Day kosher dogs on the menu, and they all went fast. The serving team--Joe Deutsch,Lauri Mansky, Stu Pittel, Susan Klein, Adam Nichols, Yoon, Lauren and Jordan Isaacs, and John Greenstine--thankseveryone who cooked, donated or otherwise supported this great effort! Our next Food Service date: November 30, 2015. --John Greenstine, Beth Israel Social Action
Please remember to donate toiletries, etc. for the Community Action Agency of Delaware County. Collection box is the bluebin downstairs. Thank you
