FROM THE RABBI

Purim, Passover, and the danger of anti-Semitism How many times have you heard the joke about making the Megillah reading shorter by just saying simply, “Hey, they tried to kill us, they failed, now let’s eat!” Sadly, the story of Purim wasn’t the irst story in the Hebrew Bible where Jews were demonized, persecuted and murdered because we were Jews. That dark distinction is found irst in the book of Exodus, where Phar-aoh’s advisors convince him that the Jews should be enslaved because they could rise up and side with Egypt’s enemies. Then emboldened Pharaoh takes the next step with the world’s irst recorded geno-cide, having Jewish baby boys drowned and killed in the Nile. In the story of Purim, once again an eerily parallel plot begins to unfold with another kingly advisor – Haman (Boo!) spreading fear and prejudice to single out the Jewish people. Haman riles up King Ahashverus and the Persian people, claiming that the Jews were not only strangers in the land with foreign customs but, they refused to follow the king’s laws. In both stories - lies, mistrust and xenophobia are used to further denigrate the Jewish people in the eyes of the masses. The result is the systematic hatred of another people (the Jews) who had been living peacefully in their country. Frightfully, the troubles and ills facing the Egyptians and later Persians, coupled with the easy targeting of foreigners (Jews lived in Goshen, Jews dressed differently, etc.) turns what were once neighbors and countrymen into oppressors and accomplices to these evil plots. Furthermore, just as in the Exodus story, the service, leadership, and dedication of the Jews to the king, country and community, was forgotten and replaced instead by virulent anti-Semitism. So, what can we learn from the similarities between Passover and Purim? – namely, thatas

Jews, wemuststandupagainstintolerance, prejudiceandhatredwhereverandwheneveritrearsitsuglyhead. As George Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it." Whether in the halls of our schools, the of ices we work, the places we socialize, or the digital domains we frequent, we must strive to be vigilant against racism, sexism, religious hatred, and prejudice. Anti-Semitic incidents — from neo-Nazis marching in Charlottesville, Va., chanting “Jews will not replace us” to physical assaults, vandalism and attacks on Jewish institutions — are on the rise. Last year, the Anti-Defamation League’s 2017 audit recorded the largest single-year overall increase, 57%, since ADL began this annual audit in 1979. That doesn’t even include the worst anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history with the Tree of Life synagogue massacre this past October. Whether from the right or the left, anti-Semitism has been emboldened here at home and certainly in Europe (74% rise in anti-Semitic incidents/attacks in France alone), the Middle East, and around the world. Yet, despite this, all hope is not lost. Our ancestors and role models - Moses, Aaron, Miriam, Mordechai and Esther teach us that good can come when we stand up to face the hatred of our times. Through the powerful tools of education, community building, and political activism we can make a difference. Indeed, I believe we will realize that there are many good people waiting to stand together with us against anti-Semitism and hate of all types. We sadly know all too well what can happen when these are left unchecked. So, as we look forward to eating our hamantaschen and drowning out Haman’s name with our groggers, let each of us do our part to make sure that the lessons of Passover and Purim never fade from our collective memories and from the memory of the world. Chag Purim Sameach! – A Happy and Joyous Purim! Rabbi Michael Singer

YAHRZEIT PLAQUES

These bronze plaques are permanent tributes to your loved ones. Unlike many of the other syn-agogues both here in the Valley and in other places, our Yahrzeit Memorial Wall has individual

lights that are turned on during the week of the Yahrzeit. It does not ma er how long ago a grandparent, parent or, G-d forbid, a child has died, the memory is s ll there. Tradi onally, we show respect and love for our departed family members by this annual demonstra on of remembrance. We say Kaddish in shul. We hold them in the forefront of our hearts and minds, and, for many of us, by the public illumina on of their names on the Memorial Wall.

The price for a plaque is $300. The price to reserve a space is s ll $25.

To reserve a space or order plaques, please contact : Sandy Wruble (610-865-2474)

The Unfolding Tradi on: An Explora on of Jewish Prac ce from Its Origins to Today

Did you ever wonder how we got 4 cups of wine/grape juice at the Passover seder? Or why we light Shabbat and holiday candles? Why do we have to wait 1, 3, or 6 hours between ea ng meat and having an ice cream sundae? Or why Jewish wedding rings have no precious stones?

This class will explore the historical and philosophical development of halacha (Jewish law) regard-ing some of the Jewish prac ces we have come to love, loathe or ques on. As we walk from the Bible through the Middle Ages and into the modern world, we will encounter a tradi on that is both flexible, richly diverse, and rooted in systema c halachic processes. Materials: The Unfolding Tradi on: Jewish Law A er Sinai, Elliot Dorff A Guide to Jewish Religious Prac ce, Isaac Klein

Supplemental material: CJLS teshuvot provided by Rabbi Class Dates Monday nights at 7:15pm:

PREPARING THE HOME FOR PESAH Passover, the festival of freedom, begins on Friday night, April 19th and ends after dark, Saturday, April 27th. Throughout the eight days of the festival, we abstain from eating any "Hametz" or leaven. During the eight days of Pesah, Hametz cannot lose its identity in an admixture. Therefore, the minutest amount of Hametz renders the whole mixture Hametz and it is prohibited on Pesah. Apart from the observance in the synagogue, Pesah has a unique place in the Jewish home, both because of the seder and because of the changed atmosphere in the home during the Passover week. This Passover home atmosphere is created each year by the traditional practice of thoroughly cleaning the home and removing all Hametz, or leaven, in preparation for Pesah. The term Hametz, or leaven, is applied not only to food whose use is to be avoided during Pesah, but also to the dishes and utensils in which foods are prepared or served during the year. The following is a general guideline based on information prepared by The Rabbinical Assembly. As we learn more about the pro-cessing of foods and the ingredients they contain, relying on the kashrut of a product for Pesah that does not hold a Pesah hekhsher – stamp of approval – may be problematic. Wherever possible, processed foods ought to have a kosher l’Pesah symbol from a reliable source. Since that is not always possible, however, our guidelines reflect some acceptable alternatives. The Search for Hametz 1) Thursday night, April 18th, we search for and symbolically eliminate from the house, all remaining leav-

ening. We do our searching at nightfall. This is an especially effective and enjoyable example for your children. You will find this ritual at the beginning of many haggadot.

2) The search is performed in the following manner: A. Place ten pieces of (visible size) bread in various locations throughout the house. B. Make the following blessing: Baruch Atah Ado-noi Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam Asher Kidshanu B’mitzvo-tov V’tzivonu Al Bi-ur Hametz, and then proceed (traditionally, with a feather, a wooden spoon, and a lit candle) to look for any leaven that can be found. C. The pieces of bread should be gathered, make the following declaration: “All manner of leaven that is in my possession which I have not seen or have not removed, or have no knowledge of, shall be null and disowned as the dust of the earth.” D. After the ten pieces, and whatever other leaven may be found, is gathered, make the following declaration: “All manner of leaven that is in my possession which I have not seen or have not removed, or have no knowledge of, shall be null and disowned as the dust of the earth.” The Burning (or disposal) of Hametz 1) The container of Hametz, gathered the evening before, is to be burned early in the morning of Friday,

April 19th, which we will be doing at Brith Sholom, following the Service for the First Born. 2) The following is to be stated: “All manner of leaven that is in my possession which I have seen or have

not seen which I have removed or have not removed, shall be null and disowned as the dust of the earth.” Though you perform the ceremony of searching for and burning the Hametz, the remaining Hametz in one’s home, including utensils used for Hametz, should not be one’s property during Passover. The practice of selling one’s Hametz and Hametz utensils to a non-Jew for the period of Passover is most appropriate. FASTING OF THE FIRST BORN Why is this fast required? Because the first born of Israel were spared from the last plague (in which all Egyptian first born were slain), this fast is assumed as a service of dedication. Who is required to fast? Every male who is a first born child, and according to some authorities, every female who is a first born child. For children under the age of 13, a parent assumes the obligation. The fast this year will be on Friday, April 19th. The Jewish tradition has developed an alternative to fasting. The first born may join in a feast for the performance of a religious duty on this day. This is expressed in one form by a “Siyyum” or completion of a tractate of rabbinic literature which takes place at the morning service. A Siyyum will be conducted at the service (7:45 am) on April 19th.
