Visit the Congregation homepage » From our Vicar Dear Friends and Congregation Family, I hope that many of you will join us again this year and Take on Lent! The overall theme of our Lenten season is really about healing through the way of love. New and wonderful things await you beginning on Saturday, March 9. Sally Slater will be leading a half-day morning retreat entitled, It’s Time to…Stop, Pray, Work, Play & Love. We’re still offering five Wednesday evening classes from which to choose. One section is Yoga and Meditation, using the seven practices of a Jesus-centered life. These same practices will guide us through a weekly bible study to wade into the deep waters and talk about race. The other new class offerings are Reflections on Forgiveness, and When the Church Hurts You. Our traditional Inquirer’s Class rounds out the five. Explore the Take on Lent offerings. Beginning March 20 and for the following four Wednesdays, our Worship Department will provide a beautiful way to conclude our evening classes. Join us for Candlelight Compline: A Service of Night Prayer in the Great Choir. The five weeks of Wednesday night suppers and classes begin March 13 and end April 10. If you only want to stay for dinner, that’s great too. When you are ready to sign up, fill out the form and hit submit! Helping neighbors fulfill goalsThrough our Outreach and SocialJustice Ministries, the Cathedral isthankful to actively participate andfinancially support the work ofSamaritan Ministry of GreaterWashington (SMGW). Recently,Canon Missioner Leonard Hamlin,Sr., and the Cathedral’s liaisonCarol Cropp visited with SMGW Executive Director David Wolfand learned about upcoming ministries that are being planned toserve those who are facing issues of poverty, homelessness orother debilitating challenges. Before leaving, Carol presented a$5,000 check on behalf of the Cathedral Congregation in supportof this great work. We are thankful for those who havecontributed their time, talent and treasure and are inviting othersto join in this work throughout the year.

commitment of time, talent and/or treasure. The Next StepProgram welcomes participants into a safe, supportiveenvironment that allows them the freedom to choose their owngoals and pursue them.

Standing with Those in Crisis:Detention Visitation UpdateThe Cathedral SanctuaryCommittee has an ongoingprogram of visits to immigrantsincarcerated in nearbyImmigration and CustomsEnforcement (ICE) detentioncenters. On any given night over1,000 detainees are held in centersin Maryland and Virginia. Many are detained for long periods andall are at high risk of immediate deportation and separation fromfamily members.

The committee hosted a training on Tuesday, January 15, forthose wishing to participate in the visits. The training was led byErin Hustings, J.D., Director of the DC Detention VisitationNetwork. More than 20 persons attended and volunteered to visitwith detainees at the Worcester County Detention Center, SnowHill, Maryland, and the Howard County Detention Center, Jessup,Maryland. Watch This Space: Volunteers NeededConstruction of the world’s largestLEGO cathedral to be built by thepublic begins on March 1. Thismulti-year project will raise fundsfor Cathedral repairs. Watch thevideo!

Interested to help? Volunteers are needed to facilitate the buildingprocess, showing visitor “builders” where to place their bricks.Volunteers will also explain the project to the curious and assistwith set-up/clean-up of the building space each day.

Volunteer shifts will be approximately 4 hours with a goal to have2 or 3 volunteers on duty for each shift. The project will usuallybe open 7 days a week. Training sessions will be held Saturday,February 23 at 9 am and Wednesday, February 27 at 7 pm. Sign up here »Learn more and help spread the word!
