Dear Goddard Family,
I hope you received your One Call earlier this week sharing that all of the Church
services, meetings and other activities will be suspended until the Bishop and Cabinet in
conjunction with the CDC believe it is safe for us to gather again in the sanctuary and
resume normal activities.
We are all experiencing this virus together and all of the new ways we are learning
to live in quarantine we have never been through before! This is a steep learning curve
for each of us.
In order to further protect the congregation, the staff is manning the pantry so
that we continue to be a sign post of hope for those in our community in need.
We are also offering words of hope through Facebook and our Goddard website at
noon during the week. We hope to ease anxiety and bring the peace of Christ during
these anxious times.
Please worship with us on Sunday mornings at 10:50 AM. If you already livestream
you will use exactly the same process you always do. If this is unusual for you to worship
this way, please go on Facebook @ GoddardUMC at 10:50 AM on Sunday morning. You
may go on the Goddard website and find livestream and press go!
Also remember, this is an important time to remember to continue to practice
good stewardship. We still have energy bills and water bills and salaries which we are
responsible for. You may mail in your tithes, drop them by the church office and we will
meet you at the curb or the door. You may also give electronically at goddardumc.org.
We will continue to live in the grace and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing
can come between us and His love. We are blessed, even though we may feel anxious
and scared, because we are not alone. May we continue to grow closer to God and closer
to one another with each breath that we take.
Be encouraged in Christ,
Kim Cloninger

The following article is a reprint from the March 8, 2020 Grapette.
The Paschal Candle came to Goddard a little over 20 years ago.
Twelve years ago it malfunctioned and was put in storage. It has been
“resurrected” for the season of Lent, leading up to Easter.
There is so much symbolism on the Paschal Candle. Circling our candle
above the cross is a pattern of stars indicating the sky. Under the cross is a
pattern of fish and water, sky, and sea, indicating earth.
The cross has inserted into it five wax nails. These five nails may be
symbolic of Christ's wounds, which were evident following His resurrection,
one wound in each hand and each foot, plus the wound where the spear pierced His side.
Above the cross is the Alpha symbol, the first letter in the Greek alphabet. Below the cross is the
Omega symbol, the last letter in the Greek alphabet. The Alpha and Omega letters are symbolic of
Jesus, who said, “ I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

The Paschal Candle
submitted by Elizabeth Eubanks
The Paschal Candle is a rich symbol of our faith.
“Paschal” comes from the Hebrew word “pesah”
meaning deliverance or Passover—connecting
the Resurrection to the Exodus. In our Methodist
Tradition, the Paschal Candle is always large and
decorative. It may have a variety of Christian
symbols. *Some of the symbolism was
mentioned the March 8, 2020 Sunday Grapette.
These are other symbols as well. The Paschal
Candle is made of beeswax to represent the
purity of Christ. The candle’s wick signifies
Christ’s humanity. The flame symbolizes Christ’s
Divine Nature and reminds us of the light that
Christ brings to our world. The current year is
added to the Paschal Candle each year to
remind us of God’s presence in our lives here
and now.
Did you know that the Paschal Candle has
special places in our sanctuary? During the 50
days of the Easter season, the Paschal Candle is
placed near the Lord’s Table and my be lighted
all our church services during the Easter season.
After Pentecost and during the other seasons of
our church year, the Paschal Candle is placed
near the baptismal font. It may be lighted for
baptisms, and it may also be placed near a
casket or urn for funerals here at Goddard.
Lighting the Pascal Candle at the beginning of
life and at the end of life, reminds us again
Christ triumphed over darkness and death and
that even in death, there is eternal life promised
to us.
When we see the Paschal candle in our church,
let us be mindful of God’s saving plan for us that
Christ accomplished by his redemptive suffering
and death on the cross. Let’s rejoice in the
resurrection of our Lord! Let us allow the light of
Christ, rising in glory, to dispel the darkness of
our hearts and minds! Let us remember and be
thankful for our faith and our promise of eternal
life.

Candle article from the March 8, 2020
