WORSHIP INSIGHTS

Second Pastoral candidate to visit Our Redeemer on July 30.

An update on our finances.

UPLIFTS It’s summer—for good and for bad. Sure there’s too much

heat at the moment, but it’s Oregon—that is bound to change. In the meanwhile, summer means breaks from routines, downtown festivals, vacations, farm-fresh fruits

and veggies, and lots of ice cream. What’s not to like?

Summer breaks in routine mean there is less going on at Our Redeemer this month, so you’ll find that this newsletter

is shorter than usual.

Our Financial Snapshot—

Our finances; our future. The General Fund finance chart below tells a pretty good story. Over the last fiscal year, our budget has funded a full-time Intentional Interim Pastor, our expenses have remained within budget projections, and, at year-end, our offerings came in just 2% below our expenses. (It would have been nicer to be 2% above, but we were close.)

As we start into a year that we hope to end with a full-time pastor in place, it is important that we continue to support our

ministry.

Maintain offerings into our General Fund. Consistent giving to support the operation of our ministry is especially important

over the summer months where schedules are frequently upended.

Return support to our Building Fund. As we look ahead to future expansion of our building and ministry, we ask members to

once again consider including our Building Fund in your contributions.

Sock & Underwear Drive for the Portland Transitional School

A Chance to Help— from Head to Toe

Our annual Sock and Underwear Drive for the students at the Portland Transitional School will be getting underway in early August and run through mid-September.

This timing is a bit earlier than prior years to better coincide with back-to-school sales and to allow our donations to reach the students earlier in their school year.

The Portland Transitional School serves homeless children in the Portland area – providing them with an education and a warm, safe place to preserve a sense of normalcy in at least part of their lives. The school operates a clothes closet, and our Sock and Underwear Drive helps build up their stock of clothing basics for these students.

Purchases of new underwear, socks, bras or camisoles will bring smiles when delivered to this school. Our donations are frequently the only contributions of clothing foundations that the school receives.

ALL S IZES ARE NEEDED!

EVERY CO NT RIBUTIO N IS PRECIO US!

Gently used children’s clothing will also be gratefully accepted by the school, and may be placed in the baskets under the hallway mailboxes.

Bible Studies to resume in September—

The Friday Morning Men's Bible Study will

resume its activities on Friday morning, September 7, at 9:00 AM. They will be studying the book of Romans, one of the Apostle Paul's most important and challenging works.

The Tuesday Women’s Bible Study will resume

weekly meetings on September 11; meeting in the Youth Room from 9 – 11 am for lively discussion as they delve into God’s Word. They are working through a study of Psalms.

Our Redeemer’s Women’s Guild will resume

their monthly schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 10:30 am. They meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month for a Bible Study, brief business meeting and salad luncheon. All women are invited to join them.

Note: The Board of Directors’ meeting for July was cancelled due to scheduling conflicts. Look for minutes on the August meeting in the next newsletter.

August 2018

The lessons are planned, the rooms are prepared, and everything is clean and shining. We are ready for another school year at Our Redeemer Preschool and Kindergarten!Special thanks to the School Board for overseeing our school operations and the Board of Properties who facilitated the arrival of Taffy’s Cottage—our new modular classroom, which is home to our first Pre-Kindergarten class.

Praise Be To Jesus! We have eighty children and

their families to love and serve this school year. Twenty-two little three year olds are experiencing school for the

first time. They are a bit clueless and totally adorable! Our

thirty-two four year olds are old-pros at the school

routine. They come to school each day ready and eager to learn something new and play with friends. Our first pre-k

class has thirteen eager learners, and we have

thirteen busy kindergartners who are excited to learn

how to read.

Each day every child is reminded that he/she is a precious child of God. Our teachers are diligent in their planning and expert in their presentation. The preschoolers and kindergartners are daily exercised in body, mind and spirit. The children are growing in many wonderful ways.

At Our Redeemer Preschool and Kindergarten we have the privilege of telling children about who Jesus is and about all He has done. We can share how Jesus was born, lived, suffered and died to pay for our sins. We can joyously proclaim how He rose from the dead and we look forward to the joy of being in His presence in heaven.

In addition to all of this Good News, the students at Our Redeemer get a great start in their first school experience. Academics, social learning, and developing problem solving skills are priorities.

Our energetic and dedicated staff this year includes:

Anne Symes - 3’s and 4’s teacher aide, school custodian

Carrie Monnie - 3’s teacher aide

Jen Lampkin - Pre-K teacher

Karen Winston - Pre-K teacher aide

Kathleen Schuyler - 3’s teacher, 4’s teacher aide

Nichole Turner - 4’s teacher

Renae Johnson - 4’s teacher and admin assistant

Sarah Amberg - 3’s and 4’s teacher

Darlene Thauland - Director/kindergarten teacher

On Aug. 27, the teachers will spend time together in worship, Bible Study, and preparation for the coming year.

In September, we expect to ‘settle in’ to the school routine. Beginning on Sept. 10, 11 and 12, Chapel will take place each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 9:15 am.

You are always welcome to come and worship with the children. In September, the Bible story is “God Creates our Beautiful World.”

Please continue to pray for our school, the teachers, the children and their families. We ask God’s benediction as we begin another grace-filled year at Our Redeemer Preschool and Kindergarten.

Beginning in Jesus’ Name,

Darlene Thauland

August 2018 Events & Updates

School news …

What began as wishful thinking in 2015 has become a reality. Taffy’s Cottage will be open to teach children in fall 2018!

A number of people have had their fingerprint on this project and have faithfully prayed and supported efforts through the years. And now is our chance to offer our thanks to —

The Expansion Committee—Brian Amberg, John Andrea, Andy Johnson, Al Tornblad, Bob Peters, Colleen Elings, Sigrid Rule and Erin Eberlein— for brainstorming, keeping the dream alive, and, finally, coalescing around the idea of modular space to serve the need of our growing school.

The Board of Properties, led by Bob Peters, has played a crucial role in coordinating plans with Alan Rasmussen of Modern Building, and patiently pursuing our building permits from the City of Tigard.

Our School Board continues to operate a vibrant school program and is ready to expand into our new space.

Thanks, also, to all the members of Our Redeemer for taking the step to use the Rein Memorial money to fund this venture.

We are so happy to name our new space ‘Taffy’s Cottage’ remembering Taffy and Vic Rein and their love for children and for spreading the Gospel message of salvation.

On Aug. 22, we will have our annual Back-to-School Picnic at 6:30 pm in the play-yard and all members of our church family are invited. It’s a great opportunity to welcome this year’s new and returning families. The food and beverages are provided. All we need is your presence!

We are seeking people who can cook and serve pancakes to happy kids and their parents. We have three Pancake Breakfasts scheduled throughout the school year. Everything is prepared in advance. You just show up to flip and serve pancakes! It’s a great way to meet some of our wonderful families and for them to experience Our Redeemer hospitality. The first breakfast is Oct. 16, 17 & 18. Serving begins at 8:15 am. Contact Darlene, 503.524.6646, to find out more.

Member Milestones & Concerns

Ca r i ng f o r and Ce l e b r a t i ng w i t h Ou r Fam i l y

One of the finest qualities of Our Redeemer members is their compassion

and caring of others in our church family—we are terrific at supporting one

another. Hardly a Sunday goes by without inquiries asking how so & so is doing,

or have their been any updates on so & so?

As we grow and age, it becomes easier to put ourselves in others’ shoes.

How would it feel to not be able to regularly (or ever) come to church? What a

difference an offer of an occasional ride to church would make in a member’s life

when they are unable to drive. Or, if I were receiving rehabilitation or hospice

care, what a blessing it would be to receive a comforting visit or card.

We all have the capacity to be a blessing in others’ lives, but do we make the

time? Are we extroverted enough to make that call or pay that visit? Would we

know what to say?

Sometimes just being present and not saying anything is all that is needed;

sometimes a card sent or a prayer offered is what we can do to be a support to

others in our church family.

The members highlighted here are largely ‘shut-in’ and may appreciate

hearing from members of their church family. Several have relatively new

addresses.

Call the church office at any time to inquire about a phone number, address,

or update on the condition of those you may not have seen recently in church or

who have undergone surgery.

Caring comes easily. Action, sometimes takes practice.
