welcome to the summer edition of connect – your business development newsletter aimed at providing you with information to help grow your business. this edition is a reflection of the year that was with one eye on our exciting future initiatives you can expect to see in 2016.

the economic development strategy 2014 is in its second year of implementation and has delivered a number of key success stories in 2015. council was able to reduce the red tape for businesses through the re-write of the Footpath trading policy, moonee valley was featured twice on national television in postcards and masterchef’s Gary mehigan promoted the array of cafes and restaurants in the municipality.

one of the key performance indicators of councils economic development strategy is the Gross regional product (Grp), while the strategy does not directly contribute to Grp, it is evidence that business is growing in the municipality. in April 2014 Grp was $3,957 million which grew 3.8 per cent to $4,107 million in April 2015. this increase is in line with the growth in Gross state product for the same period.

An exciting development for our magazine in 2015 has been its digital distribution through Facebook amongst other channels so please like “business in moonee valley” on Facebook to make sure you have all bases covered.

A Year in Review...

Moonee Ponds Art Box Project economic theme 1: Active precincts for all

twelve large boxes, situated on the footpath of moonee ponds were transformed this year into public art canvases with the aim to enhance the vibrant atmosphere of the puckle street strip.

melbourne based artist, darren munce gave new life to the grey electricity boxes with bold bauhaus-inspired designs that integrated well with the surrounding shops yet still managing to catch the eye of locals and visitors to the area. public art projects, like Art box, are a brilliant example of how the mundane can become the magnificent.

the project forms part of the ongoing work of council to support local businesses by revitalising streets, and ensuring they remain vibrant, appealing places to visit and shop.

A Unique Urban Renewal Opportunityeconomic theme 5: creating jobs for everyone

the metropolitan planning Authority, essendon Fields and moonee valley city council will create and deliver a new vision for investment and jobs in Airport west and essendon Fields. currently a thriving aviation, technology and retail precinct for melbourne’s inner north and home to 639 businesses with a workforce of more than 9000, this precinct is identified in plan melbourne as a key transport gateway and site of state significance. A brochure will be produced in 2016 that will highlight new opportunities for future business and mixed use development.

New investment in service centreseconomic theme 2: Home of professional services

A study was recently completed for the growing service centre industry in moonee valley. data collected revealed a mature service centre industry with a number of international and national companies operating within our borders. companies surveyed were asked to identify why they operate within the municipality.

comments included: · moonee valley’s well-educated population provides the

perfect catchment for staff;· excellent access to public transport;· Facilities that support the workforce e.g. childcare; and· business precincts mean moonee valley is a great place

to work

A service centre marketing plan has been developed and the focus is now targeting those companies in the market looking to relocate with the aim to further grow this industry sector and create future employment opportunities.

A growing citymoonee valley is experiencing strong population growth. while this presents many exciting opportunities for the city, it also creates challenges for council in catering for the growth in new residents and funding infrastructure to support this growth.

to help manage this growth, the minister for planning, this year, approved Amendment c100 which rezoned the moonee ponds Activity centre to an Activity centre Zone, providing greater direction for development. work is also underway to develop a structure plan for Airport west to guide residential and commercial growth.

New ways of trading in Moonee Valleyeconomic theme 3: emerging businesses and the night economy

councils Footpath trading policy was re-written in 2015 to ensure a fair approach to footpath trading in moonee valley. the policy has cut the red tape required to apply for on street trading and is more flexible with businesses.

A new category of permit has also been added called ‘street activation’ this allows businesses, at no cost, to install public art, green walls and planter boxes that contribute to the overall presentation of the precinct. For more details on the opportunities available to business through the Footpath trading policy. For further information contact [email protected]

Postcards and Moonee Valley Storieseconomic theme 4: businesses for healthy lifestyles

we began the year by launching an Ambassador program with Gary Mehigan from masterchef fame who appeared in a short video clip promoting some of his favourite restaurants and cafes. this was supported by an instagram competition and produced some terrific results with 1,609 views on the dYob Youtube channel alone.

council also commissioned a moonee valley Postcards episode featuring shane crawford who takes us on a journey of things to see and do in moonee valley. postcards screened a number of times this year on channel 9.

Finally a series of short stories as part of the Discover Your Own Backyard campaign were designed for social media presented by local residents. these clips provided a teaser of the diverse and local things to see and do in moonee valley.

the visiting friends and family tourism market is worth $2.8 billion to melbourne’s economy. by continuing to showcase our stories on social media we hope to entice - local residents and their friends and families - to explore, discover and experience moonee valley whilst maximising the opportunities to grow our economy.

Below you will see a snapshot of some of our news items featured in the Connect Newsletter over the past year. These include: Moonee Valley’s ‘Postcards’ TV program, the Art Box Project, new investment in service centres as well as urban renewal opportunities. Activities and projects undertaken are guided by the Moonee Valley Economic Development Strategy 2014 and its 5 economic themes.

Digital marketing update

Blogger Reviews in 2015

moonee valley is a foodie’s paradise – and we want everyone to know!

we have engaged a number of popular bloggers to write, post and share their recommendations of local cafes and restaurants on social media as a way of increasing the digital footprint of businesses in moonee valley.

since the project commenced we have shared over 12 different restaurant reviews on our Facebook page and website.

by far our biggest success story was urban list’s editorial titled ‘34 places You should’ve eaten At in the north west’. this list included restaurants and cafes from niddrie to Flemington and Ascot vale to east Keilor. we reached over 7,000 people with this post and it generated some really great engagement - 130 Facebook shares, 200 comments and 227 likes.

so next time you are planning to eat out make sure you stay local and try one of the restaurants reviewed.

Unblocking Buckley Streetthe state Government has allocated $2.4 billion to remove 20 level crossings during its current term.

the funding is part of their commitment to remove 50 of melbourne’s worst level crossings over eight years. while the inclusion of the buckley street level crossing in essendon is good news for our community, we don’t know

when work will occur or what the final solution will be.

council is seeking support from state Government and the level crossing removal Authority to prioritise the project and ensure adoption of our preferred design option of rail-under-road, as is the case in similar prominent, high-value areas.

Moonee Ponds junction tram worksYarra trams and public transport victoria (ptv) will upgrade the moonee ponds Junction in January 2016.

works will include:• Creating an interchange with one tram stop

for routes 82 and 59 and direct access to the bus interchange;

• Reconfiguring the junction, making it safer and easier to access for passengers;

• Constructing a pair of raised platform stops for routes 82 and 59 with shelters, seating and real-time passenger information;

• Relocating the tram 82 terminus to improve access and tram journey times;

• Replacing 800 metres of tram tracks on pascoe vale road.

preliminary work will take place from monday, 4 January to saturday, 16 January. major work starts at 12.01am on saturday, 16 January and continue until 5am on Friday, 28 January.
